William Castle

1 film covered on the show

The hosts see William Castle mainly as the showman behind crazy gimmicks. Adam describes him as the mad director of House on Haunted Hill, who used gimmicks and shock seats to make audiences scream, and Lee also mentions things flying across the cinema.

Lee says The Tingler is the film that always comes to mind when people talk about Castle's antics. Adam recommends Matinee, in which John Goodman plays a Castle-like showman. Adam also compares Lloyd Kaufman to Castle, as a director who is as much a star as his films.

In their own words

  • Adam And and then it turns around, he's a bloke with a cigar. Yeah, that's really horrible the producer. But William Castle who we met on there's quite a lot of call backs on this one, but episode 33, House on Haunted Hill. and he was the mad director of that. Who would perform like he would he had gimmicks and would shock seats to get people to scream in the middle of his films.

    Ep 140 Rosemary's Baby
  • Lee Yeah, so that having something flying across the cinema and having the electric shock seats. And all that that was all stuff that William Castle used to do.

    Ep 230 Popcorn
  • Lee Oh, yeah. Again, it's it's it is. The Tingle to me is the one when people talk about William Castle and his crazy antics. The Tingle is the one that always comes to mind for me.

    Ep 111 The Fly
  • Adam And yeah, they really are worth and, you know, certainly something like the Tingle we need to cover. Just because it's so brilliantly, well, it's William Castle, so, yeah.

    Ep 111 The Fly
  • Adam If you're going on that sort of a kick, I highly recommend Matinee, basically, it's, um, the store it's like the story of two kids who sort of think that the it they think that the world's ending, it's like set in the 50s. They think the world's ending, so they end up like trapped in this bunker. But, um, the main thing about it is John Goodman basically plays William Castle in it and he's showing his and he's showing his latest film called Mantis, which is basically the Fly. In but instead of you turning to a fly, you've become a giant praying mantis. And it's so it's sort of references them and the Tingle and the Fly.

    Ep 111 The Fly
  • Adam And also he acted as a kind of launch pad for a lot of people's careers and Lloyd Kaufman's done the same really. He's and also very much like Roger Corman, he ends up being cameo-ing in a lot of stuff. He's very much the public face of Troma. And he's he's that sort of William Castle, John Waters-y sort of direct where the director is as much as star and a recognizable figure as their movies.

Ep 165 Class of Nuke 'Em High
  • Adam That wasn't where. They were sort of but um and and like Joan Crawford ended up working with. William Castle on a couple of films. Um, what was she, uh, Berserk, uh, no, I saw what you did and Straight Jacket, which is written by Robert Block. So we're talking proper horror pedigree there and films like Berserk and things like that.

Ep 247 What Ever Happened to Baby Jane
