UnknownGood evening and welcome to horror. I'm Lee.
ChrisI'm Chris.
AdamI'm Adam.
ChrisAre you sure?
LeeYou can't see this listeners, but Adam is wearing a rather wacky mask for this evening for no reason.
Leethat he wasn't wearing two minutes ago when we all joined.
ChrisHow how does it look this evil and this manic? It's like perfect blend.
AdamOh dear.
AdamWell, I I I apologize to the listeners that it's a it's an audio medium that they can't fully appreciate my.
Adammy my mask.
ChrisI think I think you'll have to post that.
LeeYeah.
Leegrab a screenshot of it.
Leeso yes, we are here this evening for another what we've been watching episode.
Leeand as it is the week running up to Halloween, I'm hoping we've all got plenty to discuss.
LeeThere's loads of there's been some great new stuff out there as well, I've caught some very old and some very new stuff.
LeeSo, yes.
Leeso, let's start with Adam this week. What have you been watching?
AdamWell, I'm gonna start off with, more of a thank you.
Adamand an adventure, to Andy Sharp, aka English Heretic, who invited me to his book launch.
Adamin London.
AdamAnd Lee, you were very graciously my plus one.
LeeI was indeed.
AdamOh, I can't I'm gonna have to take the mask off.
AdamIt's just impossible.
AdamYeah, I should.
ChrisWho saw that twist?
LeeFor the benefit of the audio listeners, Adam has removed the mask, only to show that he is wearing another mask underneath.
AdamThat's right.
AdamAgain, imagine this on a video, but who can tell?
ChrisHave you have you ever done that to a to a fancy dress party?
AdamI've not been feeling the temptation.
AdamI'm I'm even getting in my brain, I'm getting to the point of, oh dear, I'm getting to the point of layers.
ChrisOh.
AdamLike you could something a costume you could gradually sort of shift and go back to, you know.
AdamI suppose if you went to its logical conclusion it would be like the last costumes just you skinned.
ChrisYeah.
AdamOh dear.
ChrisRight, yeah, now you're really thinking, I think you have to do this.
AdamWell, I've got over a year to plan it if it were to happen, there we go. but yes, so, yeah, so as I was saying, yeah, English Heretic, Andy Sharp, he invited me to the launch of his book, The Astral Geographic. And Lee came with me, and, yeah, it was just a nice little weird little venue under a church.
LeeIt was awesome.
AdamAn absolutely bar under a church, basically, a cocktail bar.
AdamAnd, which was just very fucking cool, unfortunately, prohibitively expensive, so you couldn't get like absolutely wankered because the cocktails were fucking gorgeous.
LeeThey were but they were very strong.
LeeI was gonna say that's the other thing as well.
LeeYeah, we did sort of have two cocktails and I know I've been off the booze quite a lot because I've been watching my weight recently.
LeeBut yeah, so I had a beer while I was waiting for Adam, in a pub across the road, yeah, and then we had two cocktails in and by the time we left, I was like, I'm pretty comfortably pissed at this point, so, yeah.
AdamYeah, same.
AdamIt was yeah, healthy, healthy cocktails, you know.
Adamin the least applicable use of that word thinking about it, but there we go.
Adambut yeah, and the book is, so English Heretics like a a project that Andy Sharp's been doing for years and I've been following that for I've no, I think it was like his third album that I heard and was just sold and yeah, just kept like listening and he's released books.
Adamwhat he used to do was, that when the albums came out, they would come with like a booklet or a Zene of and it was like sort of writing about the concept of the album, but it was more of that.
Adamand yeah, he has just a really brilliant way of thinking.
AdamAnd, this new book is basically a travel guide through occult history. Oh, okay.
AdamSo it's, yeah, basically it's all the places to visit in terms of, for example, like witchcraft, it charts Crowley's progress through the desert, and when, he did his great working and yeah, just lots of,
Adamreally interesting places and annoyingly this is like I've been reading a lot of books lately and seeing a lot of documentaries lately and they've been like, oh, I'll jot that film down, I've got to see that, I've jot that. This is ten times that because it's like, I can't afford to buy these 50 DVDs. I can't But this is I genuinely cannot afford to cross the world and see all these places, but I really want to, but he does it in such a way that I don't feel I have to.
AdamYeah.
AdamHe's a very evocative writer.
AdamAnd I haven't got that, I haven't got to the end of it, but there's also like part of the book is like a sort of grim wall like a sort of how to of basic magic sort of thing, but.
AdamYeah, but but but just yeah, thank you for inviting me, Andy.
AdamAnd for inviting us, Andy and, it was yeah, it was a great night.
AdamAnd I I think there's a certain listenership of this podcast I think would enjoy his stuff anyway.
AdamAnd yeah.
Lee100%.
LeeI say I obviously I Adam invited me as a plus one, I wasn't aware of Andy's work before this.
LeeAdam very graciously got me a copy of the book, cheeky Christmas present in advance there.
Leebut yeah, I can't wait to get stuck into it.
LeeBecause it was like hearing him talk, he was so passionate and so so knowledgeable on everything.
Leeyeah.
LeeBut yeah.
LeeIt was just his way of speaking as well.
LeeSo yeah, I can't wait to to get cracking through it.
LeeI've I've got another book, I've got like a chapter left of and that is the next thing on my queue, so, fingers crossed to it soon.
LeeYeah, next.
AdamI think I I think Andy would also appreciate this.
AdamBecause I'd never met Andy before, like spoken to him online and emailed him before and stuff.
AdamBut, yeah, so me and Lee also went with the expectation it might be like the opening of Vault of Horror.
Adamthat we were just going to a vampire bar where they'd string me upside down and put like a tap in it.
AdamOh, right.
AdamAnd, yeah, it turned out to not be that, it was just a very lovely convivial evening.
AdamAnd it was nice, nice to meet Andy and yeah.
AdamThank you again, mate.
AdamIt was just great talking.
AdamAnd yeah.
AdamA fantastic evening and yeah, check out the book and English Heretic in general.
LeeYeah.
Lee100% behind that now I've discovered it as well.
LeeAnd again, it's that thing of because I've come to it late, there's a whole plethora of stuff for me to go back through now.
LeeSo there's music and books and loads of stuff.
LeeSo yeah, I can't wait to get stuck in.
LeeOh.
LeeChris.
ChrisSo I have watched again and I so I'm not sure if I've spoke about it, but I don't think I did.
Chrisit's Ex Machina.
ChrisWhich is Alex Garland and Yeah.
Leeyeah.
ChrisBut I talked about Dev's once and I think I mentioned Ex Machina there.
ChrisBut so I saw it, it popped up, I thought, I'm going to watch that again.
ChrisAnd I think it's so it's funny, right, we watched, we watched Donnie Darko.
ChrisWhich I didn't think of as a sci-fi film and I watched this before and didn't think of this as a horror film and yet now I'm going to say that this is in definitely in my top 10 horror films.
ChrisBecause it absolutely is and I still think they capture something in this about AI and especially with the way that AI is going now.
ChrisBecause if you if you go and hang out with one camp of people, we're all going to be, you know, wiped out in the next few years.
ChrisGoing to talk to another group of people.
ChrisAnd it's going to be the best thing that ever happened to us.
ChrisWell, who knows, but that sort of sets the stage for quite a potentially horrific situation.
Chrisyeah.
AdamThe only thing the thing that that that whole argument AI argument is something that I've watched and seen.
AdamLike all sides of a lot of sides of like you say, there does seem to be two distinct camps.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisThey're both making good arguments generally.
AdamAll I will say is the fact that Elon Musk is doom saying about it, I feel probably positive.
ChrisRight.
ChrisWell, so yeah, but so here's the thing, so he's doom saying and he got what did he do he's signed the letter to say stop doing it and then very quickly went out and bought a ton of the equipment required to make some of the best AI.
ChrisSo it's like, yeah, okay, telling others not to do it, but you you're going.
AdamSo either it's building monopoly.
ChrisOh.
AdamOr so, yeah, but no, all my thoughts were it's just like, are the computers going to take a look at this and just go, hang on.
AdamThis is bollocks.
AdamYou know, what's dead kitties and stuff and he's got like more money than anyone conceivably needs.
AdamAnd yeah, I think that might be his problem with.
LeeHe's just worried they're gonna rumble him.
AdamYeah, I think I is just going to.
AdamBecause eventually the whole thing the the utopian vision is that it becomes like this impassioned overseer.
AdamThat sort of but yeah, but who's thoughts does it think, you know.
AdamIt's.
AdamI mean, especially I was listening to something the other day and they said that it was, the when they first constructed the AI.
Adamsort of model of taking everything from the internet and using that to construct.
ChrisDo you mean large language model chat GPT.
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd the first thing that it did, because it was the internet, the first thing it did was it just churned out loads of porn.
AdamBecause it was like, well, what does the internet made of and it's like, yeah, pretty much that's the bricks and of the internet.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisHow to create a great civilization.
AdamYeah.
Chrisright yeah, so, so I will just give a few points as to why I think this is one of the greatest horror sci-fi.
AdamCan you please bear in mind that I've not seen it?
ChrisOkay, yeah, all right.
ChrisI was trying to think Yeah, I was trying to be careful not to.
ChrisAll right, so so I'll give you very broad view then.
ChrisSo I think it's an amazing psychological horror from pretty much from the start all the way through.
ChrisI mean Lee, I don't know what you think of it, but I'm assuming you've seen it as you didn't say.
LeeI have seen it.
LeeI do remember enjoying it, but I saw it when it first come out and I haven't seen it again since.
LeeSo that was it was a long time ago, but yeah, it was it was it was impressive with it at the time.
AdamWas it 2009 or something like that?
AdamIt's quite.
ChrisYeah.
AdamIt's quite a long time ago now.
ChrisI'm going to say I've not got too many of the details, but it has got Oscar Isaacson who I totally did not know at the time and now looking back again seeing him after seeing him in Star Wars.
ChrisLike I sort of appreciate him in a different way in this.
ChrisBut yeah, right, so, so I think it really captures.
ChrisThis psychological horror throughout, you don't really.
LeeIt was 2014.
Chris2014.
Chrislike you don't really know who to trust at all.
ChrisNone of essentially is yeah, you are left with a bit of a mystery throughout.
ChrisAnd I think the way that unfolds it can kind of keep going either way and so it's yeah, I just think they did that excellently.
ChrisConsidering there's only three essentially three characters.
Chris
ChrisThe the settings it's very it's like isolation and entrapment, it's, you know, there's essentially in the middle of nowhere.
Chris
ChrisSo that and that made me think of Alien as well.
Chris
ChrisThere's a huge amount of manipulation and deception throughout.
ChrisAgain, trying to understand what each of their agendas are, it's it's quite fascinating.
Chris
ChrisAnd and just overall, I think the whole with the music, the atmosphere, everything about it.
ChrisIt just it.
ChrisFor me, it's a great pacing, it's slow enough and it gets technical enough to allow you to really think about the profundity of AI and especially with what's happened over the past year, as we said with Chat GPT.
Chris
ChrisBut yeah, and the the moments of action really help to, yeah, just keep the pacing going.
ChrisSo it's I absolutely recommend you go and watch it.
AdamWell, I've I've had the soundtrack since it came out and the soundtrack is brilliant.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisYeah, I mean, I guess it's mostly kind of soundscapes like eerie, chilling.
ChrisYeah.
AdamIt'd be nice to put pictures to those sounds actually now thinking about it there now.
ChrisBut go on, go on.
ChrisSo what what has put you off?
AdamNothing.
AdamLiterally, it's just been never the right time or right circumstances or whatever like that.
AdamI haven't it's always like, oh, I'll get that and then I see something else.
AdamI'll get that or whatever.
AdamDo you know what I mean?
AdamOr it'll be on streaming, but then I see something else has popped up and I was like, oh, it's never been.
ChrisOkay.
ChrisWell, I'll be very interested to see what you think.
AdamYeah, I'm going to have to force myself to do it.
AdamI think because it is and because it's Alex Garland as well because it was the.
ChrisYeah, yeah.
ChrisSo, so I did in fact, between this and last time I watched men as well and I was going to put that on.
ChrisBut then I think that's what actually made me when I saw Ex Machina.
ChrisI was like, oh, I'm going to watch that again.
ChrisAnd so men I'm going to cover at one point, but I know you covered that before.
AdamI think, I mean, yeah, we'll we'll do that on a separate one.
AdamBecause yeah, that is a fucking crazy fucking film.
ChrisYeah, it certainly is.
ChrisSo yeah, so Alex Garland is doing great stuff, I think.
LeeExcellent.
LeeCool, yeah, I might have to give that a rewatch myself then and then we can discuss it.
Leeso I have gone back and watched something very old, this was, I believe, this might have been Lou Dall recommended this a while back when we were talking about folk horror.
Leeso I went back and watched 1977's Children of the Stones.
AdamYes.
Leeyeah, I watched the whole thing in over two nights.
Leeit's all on YouTube like in its entirety.
Lee
LeeYeah.
LeeI'll tell you what.
LeeThat's right, so I think it was Loudow mentioned it before and then I was watching the Call Dudes Walking Club recently.
Leeand yeah, he mentioned, oh, I I watched it during lockdown.
LeeI'd never seen it before, it's really good, it really holds up, you know.
LeeIt's a a kids kids piece of kids TV show from the seventies.
LeeIt actually it's still quite yeah.
LeeAnd I watched it and it is it's really creepy and really strange.
AdamOh, no, it's it's fucking amazing.
AdamIt's and it is proper folk horror.
LeeYeah, 100%.
AdamBut it's, yeah, you can it's for kids, but it just it's it's a wonderful example of it's like, yeah, it's for kids, but we're not holding back, we're going to actually make it a good fucking show.
LeeYeah.
Leeit's just I know yeah, I loved it.
LeeIt's got that very cozy obviously it's before our era, so we wouldn't have seen it at the time.
Lee
ChrisYeah, so it is PG, yeah.
LeeYeah.
ChrisBut so there are there are bits that are.
LeeIt it's not.
AdamI think it's it's aimed at a an older kid kid audience that I that I think telly doesn't think is there anymore or possibly isn't there anymore, but it's aimed at like sort of like a sort of 12 to 16 sort of age group, I suppose.
LeeYeah.
ChrisI suppose a lot of them are watching YouTube now.
AdamYeah, that's what I mean, so I think he's a is a thing that doesn't exist anymore.
ChrisPossibly.
Adamin television terms, but that's who it was aimed at.
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd.
Adamyeah, so it is it's it's just a really well done.
Adamreally well thought out, horror.
Adamthat sort of borders into science fiction.
AdamIt's, it's got that isolation thing they basically go off to a
AdamIt's a father and son go to a village with a stone circle in it.
ChrisOh.
AdamAnd it's sort of like them picking up there he's an astrophysicist, isn't he? and he's like.
LeeHe is, yeah, he's there to study the stones because he believes that it's.
Leesome kind of a magnetic field that's created by them.
LeeSo he's there.
ChrisSo this is a bit like Stone Stone Tape.
LeeYeah, well, that's when I first I think it was when we covered Stone Tape that someone said, oh, you need to watch children and stuff.
ChrisOkay.
LeeI said it might I think it was Loudow, it might have been Joe Watson otherwise, but yeah, I'm sure one of them said.
AdamI'm sure Loudow spoke about it.
AdamI think I think even I think they even mentioned it at the Astra Geographic which was like on the list of yeah, sort of things that are sort of brought it brought the occult into it.
AdamAnd it's,
AdamYeah, it's just it was one of those things I saw it, I don't know, I first saw it about ten years ago or something like that because it was one of those ones you read about a lot.
AdamEspecially because like being a Dr Who fan, so you you get a lot more that sort of because again Dr Who's like aimed at kids family sort of age group, like it's meant to be that the family can watch it and similarly children of the stones was sort of like kid friendly.
AdamBut only in the sense of well, no one got their face hacked off or say shit, you know, it's.
LeeBut it is sinister as all hell.
ChrisOkay.
Leeit's also shot at Ary.
LeeDo you remember to Ary, Chris, for a weekend?
ChrisYeah.
LeeWe did.
ChrisYeah, that's right.
LeeSo they've renamed the village, but ultimately it is Ary, so that's the stone circle they use and the pub that we had dinner in that's in the center of the stone circle, that's in there and the little shop across the street.
LeeSo they did just take over Ary and filmed this little horrifically sinister folk horror thing.
LeeIt was awesome, such a good couple of nights.
Leeyeah.
LeeAgain, it's one of those.
LeePeople have been telling me to watch it.
LeeI you know, friend of our Simon as well, keeps mentioning it now and again, it was him who sent me the link.
LeeWhen we were discussing it one night.
LeeHe just sent me the link and said, look, you need.
LeeAnd it's been sitting in my email for about 18 months and I was like, right, I'm going to pull the trigger on this.
LeeAnd I'm going to watch it.
LeeAnd I was like, oh, I could have been rewatching this by now and I would have been much happier.
LeeBut yeah.
AdamSee again, it's it I think it falls into that sort of area that the Box of Delight does.
AdamI know it's like it's 10 years later on or whatever it is.
AdamBut it's that same because I know you've got I know you love the Box of Delights which is the sort of 80s.
LeeThey do.
LeeAnd in fact, I'm going to give it a quick plug, Oxford, I believe,
Leea friend of Lady Jennifer's is working on the production team, there's a stage show of the Box of Delights that we've got tickets to go and see and I think it's in Oxford.
ChrisOh, wow.
Leebut yeah, and I thought they'd make a fantastic stage show.
LeeSo yeah, just on a side note, if you're in or around Oxford, I mean, double check my facts because I could be wrong.
LeeBut I think it's somewhere around there, but yeah, there is definitely a stage production of the Box of Delights being put on and it looks like it's going to be excellent.
LeeAnd I'm going.
AdamVery nice.
Leeright.
LeeBack to Adam.
AdamI'm going to stick with, creepy and 70s and I'm going to talk about Messiah of Evil, which has just come out on Blu-ray.
AdamOh.
Adamit's a film that I'd heard a lot about, but never in the sense of, you know, famous scenes or anything, it was just people talking about the atmosphere and everything else about it.
AdamAnd finally got the chance to, finally got the chance to see it because they've released it on Blu-ray.
AdamAnd, my God, it is the most Italian film made in America that I've ever seen, it it feels it's got that sort of Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava sort of like I I can't even explain it.
AdamIt's just it feels like it it definitely feels like Dario Argento made the film.
AdamBut everyone's no one's dubbed, people are actually genuinely speaking English and it was filmed in America and yeah.
AdamIt's just but it just feels.
ChrisThat whole aesthetic has that sort of edge to it.
AdamAnd it's a very strange film.
AdamIt's basically this woman goes to.
ChrisIt looks like the color is quite significant.
AdamOh, yeah, no.
Adambasically a woman goes looking for her father, it's an artist who's gone missing and she goes, I mean, that's just the most it's not even a big point, but she stays at this house.
AdamBut because he's an artist, the house is fucking mental, but it's not actually it's kind of it's an atmospheric point rather than a plot point, but he's got like a a bed suspended on chains that's like a white marble block suspended on chains in the middle of the room.
AdamAnd he's painted all the walls with huge freezes of like murals of scary people staring at you out of windows and things like that.
AdamAnd so it's like it's just fucking it just it just looks mental.
AdamAnd then sort of weird things start happening in the town that are never never explained even to the point that I'm not sure whether they were cannibals, vampires or zombies, I don't know.
Adambut the film didn't tell me.
AdamBut with some weird influence like some weird past dark presence that sort of afflicted the town before and this has happened before and.
Adamand also two of the eeriest kills I've seen in something for a while just because there's two of I sort there's watching them that gives you the the full effect, obviously.
AdamBut there's one bit where there's a girl who's gone into a cinema.
AdamAnd gradually behind her, the entire seat gets filled up by people from the town.
AdamWho are all just sort of sitting there staring at her, but she's just unaware because she's watching the film.
AdamSo.
AdamAnd it's like.
AdamIt's like The Birds.
AdamYou know.
AdamWhen she's sitting there at the on the park bench and.
LeeOh, yeah, they just.
AdamIt's like that, they keep doing a close-up on her and then he pan out and there's like, there's now 15 people behind her.
AdamAnd now there's and more people coming in the whole time and it's just like.
AdamYeah, it just leaves you in a sort of odd space because it's like, oh, that's exactly how I'd react in that situation.
AdamOnly that situation has never been presented to my brain before.
AdamBut I know exactly how terrifying that is.
Adam
AdamYeah, so I mean it's it's it's not a, you know, I.
AdamIt's definitely style over substance, so it's very Italian horror in that like 70s Italian horror in that sense.
Adam
AdamBut like I say, I enjoyed I enjoyed the the sort of just outright strangeness of it.
AdamEspecially because it was quite, no, no, we're not going to explain that.
AdamHe just eats mice.
AdamAll right.
AdamAnd.
Adamyeah, it's a yeah, I I it's definitely something I'm coming back to because I think it's going to sit in my lodged in my brain.
AdamI watched it about four days ago or whatever it was.
AdamAnd yeah, it's got the right elements.
Adamall the scenes I'm like, I just want to see that again because that just looked great, but yeah.
AdamSo.
Adamdefinitely definitely a recommend, but it's,
AdamI I don't think slowburn is the term just from the base.
ChrisIt's a certain taste.
AdamYeah, yeah.
LeeOkay, excellent, cool.
LeeChris.
ChrisOkay, so I've watched, I think it came out recently on Netflix.
Chrisit's A24's.
ChrisIt's directed by the Philippa Brothers, Danny and Michael.
ChrisAnd it is called Talk to Me.
Adam
ChrisNow, I thought.
LeeIt's popped up, I've not watched it.
ChrisNo, well, so, so I think it.
ChrisI think I saw it in a list of A24's best horrors.
ChrisSo I thought, all right, I'll give it a go.
ChrisNo, I would say, it's not typically one that I would have rushed to watch.
Chrisbut it sounds like,
ChrisThese brothers used to have a YouTube channel and this is their first, horror film.
ChrisAnd yeah.
AdamOh, yes, yeah.
ChrisSo, so essentially, so it's, you kind of find out pretty quickly, it's all about this ceramic hand that, if you hold on to it and say talk to me, then you see a lost soul essentially.
ChrisAnd it follows mostly follows this girl who is the, I think the second anniversary of her mother's death and she kind of becomes a bit obsessed with it.
ChrisI won't say more than that that's, you know, that is sort of the premise.
ChrisAnd, yeah, I like it.
ChrisThere's a few jump scares.
ChrisIt's, it's quite interesting, the characters are pretty good.
ChrisI enjoyed it, but yeah, I don't tend to rush at these sort of ones.
Chriswhere it's,
ChrisI don't know, I suppose I suppose as it went on it seemed to have there was more depth.
ChrisIt it kind of talked about the relationships between them all, but yeah, it felt a bit like, I think for the first, I wasn't sure it was going to go anywhere.
Chris
ChrisSo.
LeeIt's a slightly odd premise, I've got to say it.
ChrisYeah.
LeeWhat how why would you ever just talk to a hand?
LeeTo discover the first.
LeeBut I suppose, yeah.
ChrisThat that was where I wasn't too sure.
ChrisBut yeah, you know.
ChrisI suppose it's a bit like doing Ouija board or anything like that.
ChrisBut again, if you said it's a film about that, I would think, okay, how how good are they going to be able to present this?
ChrisBut it it was it was pretty good.
ChrisI mean yeah, I think it it seems like it did well.
ChrisGenerally, a lot of people seem to like it.
AdamYeah.
AdamI mean, this is the thing, I think it's also it's dependent on the person.
AdamYou've got.
ChrisIf you've never seen a horror film, it might well be.
AdamWe we're reasonable men, we've just seen some unreasonable things.
ChrisYeah.
AdamAnd yeah, I think but yeah, for for a main, I mean, something like hereditary.
AdamIt's like, no, I can understand why the general public were quite freaked out by that film.
ChrisYeah, in fact, what was it, I was skipping through some things earlier on Netflix.
ChrisAnd I I can't remember what it was, but it came on, it started to play and then Shelly looked up and she was like, is this horror?
ChrisAnd I said, oh yeah, because it says it's, you know, like if you liked hereditary, you probably like this.
ChrisOkay, I'll turn this off quick.
ChrisBecause I don't think she'd survive it.
ChrisBut yeah.
LeeNice.
LeeSo I might have to check that out at some point.
Leeso I I realized something about myself this year and I think it's.
LeeSo obviously we watch horror all year round constantly, and yet when we come to Halloween, when most people then go into their I'm going to go and watch loads of horror shit.
LeeI think because I loved it so much as a kid, this is when I go back to more family-friendly type.
LeeI'm going to go back and watch, you know, the Halloween tree and all that kind of stuff.
LeeLike.
ChrisYeah, being anti-anti.
LeeYeah.
Leeso in that vein and also because it's just been really least, obviously, I watched the new Haunted Mansion film.
ChrisOh.
Lee
AdamNot The Muppets Home with Mansion that I discovered was existence day.
LeeNo.
LeeThat came out last year, I did mention it when I watched it.
LeeI quite enjoyed it, but they'd kind of it had been pitched as like a feature length.
LeeSo I thought it was going to be the new, you know.
LeeMuppets Christmas Carol.
LeeI think.
LeeI wasn't expecting it to be a 40-minute short, but I I really enjoyed it.
Lee
LeeYeah, no.
LeeSo this was a new live action one with Owen Wilson is in it and Danny De Vito is in it, Jared Leto.
Lee
LeeYeah.
LeeI I really enjoyed it again, it it was,
LeeIt was very Disney.
LeeSo it was fairly family-friendly, but like we like we were saying a bit with children of the Stones and stuff, it didn't pull its punches.
LeeLike the scary ghosts were scary.
Lee
LeeSo like the hatbox ghost is is one of the main characters in it and he looks as ludicrous as he does in the Haunted Mansion.
Lee
LeeBut yeah, a lot of the other ghosts look like a bit like the ghost from Ghostbusters too.
LeeLike they're all pretty pretty grizzly.
Leebut yeah, because it's in such a comedy setting, you don't you hopefully most kids wouldn't get too upset by it.
LeeI was a little bit unsure because it was one of those.
LeeThere's a lot of names in it, but the two main characters, one of them I've heard of and one of them I hadn't.
LeeAnd I was like, well, they've got a lot of bigger names, better known actors.
LeeAnd then it was it's LaKeith Stanfield, and Rosario Dawson, who I've heard of Dawson, but I've not seen any of her stuff.
Lee
LeeYeah, and I was just a bit like, oh, is this going to be another house of long shadows where the others have all got, you know.
LeeLike a little five minute cameo or whatever.
LeeAnd it's all going to rest on two relative.
LeeI want to say unknowns, but.
Lee
LeeBut yeah, no, they were excellent and it was really good.
Lee
LeeEveryone gets great screen time in it.
Leeyeah, and I found it really funny, really entertaining, very family-friendly, I say, but still pretty creepy.
Lee
LeeYeah, and it was it was a good tale.
LeeSo it's the idea is a woman has moved into the house with her kid picked the house up cheap.
Lee
LeeAnd it's obviously haunted.
LeeSo she's brought in Owen Wilson, who's a priest.
LeeLeKeith Stanfield is a photographer.
LeeBut he's also a a physicist or something and basically he's built a camera that can take photographs of ghosts.
ChrisOkay.
LeeSo he.
Adamlike 13 ghosts.
LeeYes, exactly.
LeeYeah.
LeeSo he comes in to help them and they soon discover that the reason that the ghosts are being so active is because they are scared and they're trying to get attention to get help.
Lee
ChrisOh.
LeeI won't give away the cameos in it because I don't believe looking at the IMDB, they don't appear to be on it.
LeeThere are two cameos in it that are absolutely outstanding.
Leebut yeah, I won't spoil those for you.
LeeI'll wait until you see them.
Lee
LeeBut yeah, really good, really entertaining, great like Sunday afternoon film.
LeeI'll definitely be going back and watching it again.
LeeVery good.
ChrisExcellent.
Leeright, we've got five minutes left.
LeeSo quick fire.
AdamQuick fire.
LeeAdam.
Adamvery quick fire, apart from honorable mention for Bottom Terror, which is now Ted's first ever episode of bottom that he's watched.
LeeYay.
AdamStart me up, we're indoctrinating.
Adamand but me and Claire have rewatched Psychoville.
ChrisOh, excellent.
AdamReese Sheersmith and Steve Pemberton's series between the League and Inside Number Nine.
ChrisAnd I definitely need to watch that.
Adammostly because it's got a Halloween episode, but we've been saying about we hadn't watched it for ages and you forget how fucking good that is.
LeeYeah.
AdamIt's, for anyone who hasn't seen it, it's definitely if you like the if you like the League of Gentlemen, if you like Inside Number Nine, watch it.
AdamCertainly because one episode of Inside Number Nine will probably make a more sense if you do watch Psychoville.
AdamBecause we did that as well, we watched the the inside number nine that was there.
AdamSo.
AdamNot really a conclusion, but just a sort of actually it was, it tied up the last loose end, I suppose, yeah.
LeeYeah.
AdamBut.
Adamit would have been a tad confusing, I think for some viewers, but
AdamNo, all in all, that is just yeah.
AdamRewatch, definitely.
Adambecause it's all good.
LeeExcellent.
Adamand so many great actors in it, Daniel Kaluuya, Don French.
AdamJust tons, tons of people.
LeeFantastic, excellent.
LeeChris.
ChrisSo I just today watched The Fall of the House of Usher, which is.
LeeOh, I was going to discuss that.
ChrisOkay, well.
ChrisSo I I don't know the story, you know, amazingly.
ChrisI you may well have mentioned it.
Chrisapparently it's Edgar Allan Poe's most famous story.
Leeand it's it is an excellent.
LeeIt was one of the core Rodger Corman Vincent Price movies.
ChrisOh, okay.
LeeVery good.
ChrisGood.
ChrisCould go back and watch that.
LeeYeah.
Adammaybe we should do that while that's a thing that's out as well.
AdamBecause.
Adampeople might go and seek that one out.
ChrisWell and and I will have seen some more episodes of this, so I've only seen the first episode so far, but but yeah, so Mike Flanigan adaptation.
Chrisa modern day adaptation.
ChrisI think it's even set like it was something like 20th of November.
ChrisA date came up at some point on there.
ChrisSo it's like right now, I guess.
Chrisand coming up.
Chrisbut he owns a huge drug empire called Fortunato pharmaceuticals.
Chrisand really the only thing I think you know and you find out very early on is that all of his children have died.
ChrisAnd he's got children by five different wives and he's being interviewed by the police chief.
ChrisAnd and it's got a surprise appearance from Mr. Mark Hammill.
ChrisWhich won't be surprising to anyone that was on there with him, but I didn't expect to see it.
LeeHe plays a fantastic, I've seen the whole series now.
ChrisOh.
LeeYeah.
LeeHe plays a great character.
ChrisOh, yeah, cuz you only see him like very briefly in the courtroom.
ChrisThe first one, like, what's that?
ChrisThat's my camera.
LeeYeah, no.
LeeHe plays a much bigger role as time goes on and it's excellent.
LeeIt's one of those it's got like one long through story, but it is kind of episodic as he says.
LeeSo each episode is about the story of one of the kids.
LeeSo you get everything else that's going on.
LeeAnd they are all each episode is named after a story by Graham Poe and kind of uses it as a very loose.
ChrisOh, okay.
ChrisThat's pretty good.
LeeYeah.
ChrisIt made me think a little bit of Wednesday, it sort of had a a weird dark, but light-hearted thing going on.
ChrisAlmost the same time, like not quite funny, but.
LeeYeah.
ChrisAt least in this first episode.
ChrisIt it was, it seemed slightly like, especially with the banter between Rodrick and.
LeeYeah.
Leeand.
LeeYeah, but it does get.
Leeyeah, it does get way darker, way darker, way faster than you expect.
ChrisOkay, okay.
ChrisWell, it says it's an 18 in this, I was like, was that an 18 that much craziness in it?
LeeOh, yeah, it kicks off, it is horrific.
LeeIt yeah, but it's excellent.
LeeI really enjoyed it.
LeeReally creepy, really dark.
LeeDidn't at the end as well, you like you know something's coming at the end, you're waiting for the big final twist.
ChrisOkay.
Leeso yeah, it's it's well worth the well worth watching.
LeeStick with it.
ChrisExcellent.
LeeCool, right.
LeeDon't spoil too much on that as it a lot of people probably still haven't seen it.
LeeThanks very much for listening, everybody.
