About
Welcome To Horror Presents: “The We Have Been Watching Invasion of Earth”. It’s time for our semi-regular round up of all the entertainments we’ve been sticking into our brains for the past few weeks (and no laughing at the word “semi” please, we’re all grown ups). This time round there’s quite an international flavour as we discuss Soviet masterpiece “Viy” (1967); 2 movies from South Korea in modern classic “Train to Busan” (2016) and the “Tucker & Dale…” reimagining “Handsome Guys” (2024); fantastic Norwegian comedy “Troll Hunter” (2010); and the breathtaking 1922 Danish/Swedish silent documentary “Häxan” (and it’s William Burroughs narrated 1968 version, “Witchcraft Through the Ages”). We also cover hit podcast “Broken Veil” (2025), 1982’s “The Slumber Party Massacre”; “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” and “The Book of the Witch” (both 2024). Plus there are honourable mentions for “Battle Beyond the Stars”; and the anthology shows “Tales of Unease” and “Armchair Thriller”. There should be no need to prep for this ep, but listeners beware, as here be (possible) spoilers and (definite) swearing. Join us!

LeeGood evening and welcome to Horror. I'm Lee.
ChrisI'm Chris.
AdamI'm Adam for how long?
Leeand we are here again for a round-up of what we've been watching.
Leethese are normally spoiler-free, but they'll probably still be swearing, just to make everybody aware.
Leeand let's begin with Adam. What have you been watching?
AdamOkay, right, I've got, well actually, this is what I've been listening to.
Adamthere's a podcast called Broken Veil.
Adamsix parts like cereal.
Adamfucking brilliant. It really is.
AdamIt's basically it's because it's it's Joe Morris, who I know from other podcasts.
AdamAnd he presents two really good comedy podcasts.
AdamBecause he writes for like Charlie Brooker.
LeeYeah.
AdamLike what's it called? Like screen wipe and stuff like that.
AdamAnd he's one of the he's one of the creators of Philomena Cunk.
LeeYes.
ChrisVery good.
AdamIt's yeah, just a really so I know him.
AdamHe's got two podcasts. There was one called The Rule of Three, which was just comedians came on to talk about comedy they liked.
AdamIf they like, you know, someone comes on and talks about Bill Hicks or a Monty Python album or something like that.
AdamAnd then they did, then he did a podcast called, or he's doing a podcast called Comfort Blanket.
AdamWhich is again, sort of people coming on and talking about sort of just the things they watch for comfort as it were.
AdamAnd but yeah, so he, so I was familiar with him.
AdamAnd it's him and a guy called Will Maclean.
LeeWill Maclean, I wrote a book called The Apparition Phase, which is absolutely brilliant.
AdamI was going to ask you about this.
LeeI have, yes, and it's great.
AdamI've got to get that then. No, that's it.
AdamI'm going to get I'm getting that because I I bought the fucking soundtrack to the podcast.
LeeOh, did you?
AdamYeah, limited edition CD. I thought, I'm fucking having that, because I really enjoyed it.
AdamAnd it was one of those things where it's like, I can't wait for the DVD to come out almost.
AdamThat's one of the things with podcasts, especially when it's something that's to a certain extent is contained.
AdamIt's a series.
LeeYeah.
AdamSo it's a sort of played as real, so it's they are Joe Morris and Will Maclean.
AdamAnd they decided to do a paranormal podcast that led them down this weird path.
Adamthere's loads of it was really wonderful being a comedy spotter.
AdamAnd it was like, we spoke to our, we spoke to an actor friend of ours called Tony and then he started talking, it was Tony Way.
AdamIt was Hanson's dad.
AdamSo I was immediately Tony Way, I know I know which Tony it is.
AdamAlthough because they're sort of doing it in that sort of, we'll call them Kevin.
AdamYou know.
Adamand then it was another friend, a director called Al.
AdamWhich was Barry Shipley, Al Campbell.
LeeHey.
AdamAnd and Paul Putnam as well.
AdamWhich is always always wonderful.
AdamAnd yeah, so they've got this really great little group of people and they sort of weave a sort of.
AdamSeries of happenings together into some sort of uneasy whole that doesn't have a resolution.
AdamIt's more about the speculation of what is going on.
AdamBut they build this sort of.
AdamIt starts like the first one, they just have it's Tony Way talking about he went for a he accidentally went to the wrong address when he was meant to have a medical for a film.
Adamand they don't know where he went, he just went somewhere.
AdamAnd they sort of did a a medical exam on him and he left, but it wasn't the people that were meant to have done it.
AdamAnd it's sort of strange and weird and sort of like, you know, sort of just a weird little anecdote that someone tells you.
AdamAnd then other stuff comes into it that's kind of similar, kind of.
AdamWhere you feel there's a connection and seriously, they have just done it so.
AdamBrilliantly.
AdamAnd as I say, the first episode, I wasn't sure.
AdamIt was only when the second episode came in and they were sort of like a similar experience that happened to someone.
AdamI was like, oh, right.
AdamSo this is a thing.
AdamBut at first, I was just like, is this just a story that Tony Way told them?
AdamAnd they're presenting like a real life podcast.
AdamYou know, it really is really effective.
AdamAnd funny and yeah, it's just, it's seriously if you've.
AdamI'm I'm definitely going to buy the book.
AdamSo definitely listen to the show.
AdamAnd like I say, the six episodes are up now, so you can do the lot.
AdamBecause I started listening around.
AdamI think episode three had come out and someone was sort of like had posted about it on Instagram or something like that.
AdamAnd I was, oh, okay, what's this?
AdamListen to the three episodes.
AdamAnd then had to wait for the next bit.
AdamAnd you know, and it was like, no, no, I need to hear more.
AdamAnd yeah, I'm hoping they'll do like a follow-up series or something similar.
LeeThey are.
Adambrilliant.
LeeThey are.
Leesee, I I haven't heard it yet.
LeeI'm saving it because we're going away this weekend and it's a long drive.
LeeSo my plan is to queue all six episodes up and smash through it.
LeeYeah.
ChrisPerfect.
LeeI heard about it because he guested this week on one of my favorite podcasts, Loremen.
Lee
AdamOh yes, I listen to that. Yeah.
LeeHe talked about it.
LeeYeah, and that was that was what wet my appetite and I was like, yeah, I'm definitely definitely interested in this.
LeeIt sounds, I say, just everything they said about it sounded so perfect for me.
LeeSo I'm so glad that you've heard it as well and thought the same.
AdamOh, man, it's so it's so fucking good and it's just, it's been a, because.
AdamI don't know where it is, in sort of in terms of podcasts, there's a sort of, there's people who plod on like our good selves, you know what I mean, and we just release.
AdamSo it's it's weird when you get something that's like a little burst.
LeeYeah, contained.
AdamAnd and it's like a complete artifact.
AdamAs it were.
AdamAnd yeah, so I mean, I think I don't listen to enough fictional podcasts.
ChrisNo.
LeeI definitely don't.
LeeBecause I normally have them on while I'm doing stuff.
LeeSo if you if you miss, you know, if it's people chatting and you miss 30 seconds of it because you're concentrating, it's not the end of the world.
LeeBut if it's a story and you miss something relevant, it can throw the whole thing out of whack.
LeeWhich is why I was like, I'm definitely going to save this until I'm 100% focused and can give it my full attention.
LeeBut yeah.
LeeVery excited.
AdamYes.
AdamSo yeah, that's a absolute fucking complete recommend.
AdamBecause yeah, I've just.
AdamIt it I am genuinely annoyed that I'm not getting another episode.
AdamLike this week.
AdamYou know, because I feel and it I don't think it it.
AdamLike I say, it leaves things pretty open-ended.
AdamSo they could go from there, but I don't know whether they'd want to or they'd take something like a different direction or whatever like that.
AdamBut this just as they did it was brilliant.
AdamYou know, really really well done.
LeeExcellent.
LeeYeah, I'm very much looking forward to it.
LeeAs I say, I read The Apparition Phase, about a year, year and a half ago.
LeeBecause actually it's a a friend of mine went to university with Will and said, oh, my my mate wrote this book, you should read it.
LeeIt's pretty good.
Leeso we got hold of it and it just totally blew me away.
LeeI was like, oh my God, it's perfect.
LeeYeah, so when I heard he'd teamed up with Joe, I was like, well, this this can't go wrong.
LeeThis has got to be absolutely amazing.
LeeSo, yeah.
LeeAwesome.
AdamAlso.
AdamAlso, I don't know if you I don't know if you know him.
AdamBut Will Will Maclean really sounds like I created a different picture in my head.
Adamhe really sounds like the actor Trevor Cooper.
AdamBut he looks nothing like Trevor Cooper.
AdamWho is a very lugubrious sort of presence.
Adambut yeah.
Adamno, and funnily enough.
AdamAnd that's the other thing with it, it's it's sort of Essex centric.
LeeYeah.
Adambecause they both grew up around Essex, so again, it that was something that obviously drew me to it.
AdamEspecially when it's like, I sort of know the bits of Essex they're talking about.
AdamOr I've been through something.
ChrisThat's a nice little bonus.
AdamYeah.
LeeExcellent.
LeeFantastic. Right, definitely be checking that out.
LeeChris, what have you been watching?
ChrisYeah, so I've had a fun one.
ChrisI seem to have managed to create a bit of a theme out of the films.
ChrisNot intentionally.
Chrisalthough it may turn out that really a lot of films we watch.
LeeIt's all fucking cars.
LeeYeah.
ChrisI should do that one day, marathon Tom Cruise.
ChrisA marathon Tom Cruise experience.
Chris
ChrisBut yeah, so, so I decided just to go for a bit of a random search, tried to go fairly deep.
ChrisJust to find films that either didn't I didn't know a lot about or I didn't know that we'd necessarily spoken about.
Chrisjust to see if I could find any gems.
Chris
ChrisSo the first one I went for was Troll Hunter.
LeeOh.
AdamOh, man.
ChrisOkay.
ChrisSo I don't know that we've talked about it.
ChrisIt seems like we may have done or talked around.
LeeI think it would have come up when we covered Rare Exports.
ChrisIt could have done. I mean, that's that's that's a good few years ago.
AdamIt has, to be honest, and to be honest, it's probably been on the list since then.
ChrisYeah.
AdamI think something that's that's definitely one for the show as well.
AdamLike.
AdamDo a main episode on.
AdamBecause.
ChrisYeah.
AdamOh, man.
AdamIt's so is it your first time seeing it?
ChrisIt is, yeah.
ChrisAnd and but but so with a with a title like Troll Hunter.
ChrisI was like, it could be rubbish.
ChrisAnd I I looked at, you know.
ChrisI looked a little bit of information about it, I saw Norwegian, okay, well that's good.
Chrisand sort of documentary, mockumentary style.
ChrisAnd subtitles, and I thought.
ChrisI don't know, all right, I'll I'll give it a go.
ChrisBut my expectations are not massively high at this point because I didn't think I'd heard of it.
Chris
ChrisBut yeah, and it it turns out it is actually really good and there's a lot of elements in it that yeah, sort of cover all the areas that I like.
ChrisYou know, the fact that it's folklore meets bureaucracy.
AdamYes.
ChrisLike who you think.
ChrisIt's not going to work.
ChrisAnd yet, somehow, it's it's that.
ChrisI suppose is it, you know, it's like so it's 2010, we were getting things where it's like presenting kind of the mundane.
ChrisAnd somehow pulling it off in a way that's very entertaining.
AdamI think I think now you say it, I think it just about pre-empts.
ChrisYeah.
AdamSort of what we do in the shadows.
AdamLike the future.
ChrisYeah, exactly.
AdamAnd particularly obviously Wellington Paranormal that spins off that.
Chris
AdamLike Troll Hunter and Wellington Paranormal have a lot in common.
Chris
Adamif you've seen that as well, because it's just, yeah.
AdamNo, it's it's so good and so funny.
ChrisIt is, it is very funny.
ChrisAnd then again, that's like, that could be harder to achieve with subtitles, you know, it's not necessarily always going to work perfectly.
ChrisBut it really did.
AdamYeah, they really managed to translate, you know, it translates that.
ChrisThat.
AdamYeah.
AdamIt it's yeah, no, there's some magnificent bits in that.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisYeah, it progresses well.
ChrisI mean it's it's it's good to see the trolls, you know, if you like trolls.
ChrisWhich.
LeeYeah.
ChrisDoesn't really.
AdamBut all the troll law is sort of correct to.
ChrisYeah, okay.
AdamLike sort of troll folklore and stuff like that.
AdamSo.
AdamYou know, the the mythology is correct.
AdamBut it's being dealt with by, you know, just a bloke in a Jeep.
ChrisRight, yeah.
ChrisAnd and then you realize eventually.
Christhey start to bring in the whole you know, political aspect, social aspect, and so it's like, you know, we're ruining the environment, it's got all that sort of angle, and yeah, conspiracy or possible conspiracy.
ChrisBecause you could imagine like, there is what governments tried to do, they're trying to cover things up or deal with things, you know, so it's like it's it's treads the line, I thought very well.
Chris
ChrisAnd so yeah, throughout I was I was very entertained and yeah, they they covered covered a lot in that.
Chris
ChrisSo I was kind of surprised. I thought, I'm sure we should have talked about this, but there you go.
LeeIt.
LeeIt it was it was just that point.
LeeIt there was a few years before we started, and I've got to admit, I saw it.
LeeSo so I'd heard about it and discussed it with Adam who had also heard about it.
LeeAnd as soon as it got released, I managed to track down a DVD and Adam came over and one Friday night and we watched it and we're blown away.
ChrisOkay.
LeeAnd I don't think I've watched it again since, despite the fact I remember loving it.
LeeIt was one of those that for some reason just never pops into my head to re-watch.
ChrisI mean, yeah, you might not necessarily feel like there's a it it may not rise to the top of a, you know, a short list if you like what we're going to watch.
ChrisAnd yet, I think if I watched it again, I would really enjoy it again.
LeeYeah.
AdamOh, absolutely.
AdamI think I think in the after that first time I watched it with you, Lee, I think I saw it.
AdamI watched it a a good maybe sort of four more times, I think, you know, because I because I.
AdamI I thought it was fucking brilliant.
AdamAnd that so immediately, I bought it so then I had to check that the Blu-ray was working.
AdamSo.
ChrisI watched it.
AdamI watched it.
AdamAnd then and then I took it around Dean's and showed Dean or vice versa, I can't remember.
AdamAnyway.
AdamAnd yeah, so I've showing it to people and stuff like that because I'm like, it's fucking film.
AdamYou've got to see it.
AdamYeah.
AdamSo.
AdamI think yeah, I think I've watched it.
AdamI watched it and I will absolutely revisit it because I yeah, I think it is, you know.
AdamJust I'm I'm glad that you've watched it now that suggests to me, oh, it still holds up.
ChrisYeah.
AdamAnd everything, you know.
AdamBecause sometimes when you go back to stuff and you're like, am I making allowances for myself at the time?
AdamOr.
ChrisWell, I was a bit concerned, you know, how far they're going to take the effects, but I mean I still thought yeah, that all works really well.
Chris
ChrisAnd those with a found footage sort of view, it doesn't need to be sort of the absolute best production and it still is effective.
AdamYeah.
AdamOh, I think I think a lot of filmmakers have woken up to that though.
AdamThat it's if you do it.
AdamParticularly stylized or, you know, like with some found footage or something like that or a particular grain or whatever.
AdamIt it does mean that your effects are going to like any sort of CG effects, they're going to look pretty much of the piece.
AdamThey're not losing that sort of thing.
AdamSame when you're trying to do with like crystal clear fucking 4K clarity and it's like.
LeeYeah.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisExactly.
ChrisSo yeah, so that was a good one.
LeeExcellent. Good choice.
Lee
AdamRight, we'll have to do it at some point.
AdamMaybe we'll do we'll do it for Christmas, we'll have a Trolley Christmas.
LeeThat sounds good to me.
Leeso my.
LeeNext movie, I, following on from our last episode, Adam, you brought to my attention that there is an Asian remake of.
LeeTucker and Dale, so I managed to track down Handsome Guys.
LeeAs it is called.
Lee
LeeAnd yeah, totally loved it.
AdamOh, yes.
LeeAbsolutely loved it.
LeeIt was the the thing that made me laugh more than anything was I remember Chris saying on the episode.
ChrisIt was as it was sold.
LeeIt well, it was, but on the episode, you said it'd be perfect with Evil Dead and Cabin in the Woods.
LeeAnd the remake isn't like a shot for shot remake, it has a lot of the same elements in kills, but it's got a supernatural element, which mimics Evil Dead and Cabin in the Woods.
Chris
LeeOh.
AdamOh, okay.
LeeSo I'm sold then.
LeeYeah, no, it's absolutely, I can tell you because it's in the first five minutes of the film.
LeeThey buy the cabin and get there and basically, it was owned by a missionary who was out there, who managed to restrain Baphomet and has it trapped in the basement, and Baphomet can return to Earth after five people are killed.
LeeWith the same sort of marks on the ground that filled with blood as they have it.
Lee
LeeYeah.
LeeAnd it it just it it takes a really good film and puts all those extra elements in.
LeeAnd make something equally as good, totally different, but with that same, their relationship is very similar.
Lee
LeeAnd I say the kills and stuff are pretty much the same.
LeeBut yeah, they're it's all because it's being manipulated by a supernatural force rather than it just being a series of unfortunate events.
Lee
LeeBut yeah, it's it's absolute, absolutely brilliant.
LeeI loved every minute of it.
AdamOh.
Lee
LeeAdam.
LeeWhat have you been watching?
AdamI I nearly forgot to mention this.
Adam
AdamAnd then I remembered, oh.
AdamThis was kind of the thing I specifically watched just in case for we've been watching.
AdamTo make sure I had something properly like horror or whatever, you know.
Adamso.
AdamAnd I've been meaning to give it a go anyway.
AdamSo I watched Hellboy the Crooked Man.
LeeOh.
LeeThe one that came out about three years ago?
AdamNo.
AdamThat was the that was the sort of reboot that oh, the guy who direct Neil Marshall, the guy who directed the Descent.
LeeYes.
AdamDog Soldiers.
AdamYeah, he did one.
AdamI'm still not seeing that.
Adambut this came out 2024.
ChrisOh.
LeeOkay, cool.
AdamAnd
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd I've seen a lot of sort of people slating it, I've seen a lot of people defending it.
AdamEveryone's very much sort of like, both sides are sort of talking about the fact that, oh, well, you got to make allowances for a low budget.
AdamAnd it's like, yeah, it clearly is lower budget, certainly than the Gilmerro del Toro ones.
Chris
AdamBut if anything, it's made me wish there was a Hellboy TV series.
Chris
AdamBecause this just feels and which is oddly true to Hellboy.
AdamBecause the comic does have a story arc and it has sort of.
AdamYou learn about Hellboy learns about himself.
AdamBut.
ChrisCan I stop you briefly? I'd like to learn a bit about Hellboy.
ChrisBecause all I know is he looks a bit like a demon.
AdamYes, oh, so you've not seen the Hellboy film.
ChrisI haven't seen any, no.
AdamOkay, well, I think Hellboy with I mean the so the two Guillermo del Toro films I'd definitely watch and I'd definitely do on the show at some point.
ChrisI seem to remember one, I didn't know there was two, but it was quite big.
ChrisWhen it was released.
LeeYeah, it was.
AdamBut but yeah, so basically Hellboy started as a comic by Mike Mignola.
AdamAnd.
AdamAnd it's a got a real sort of noir sort of aesthetic to it, like when you see the like the.
ChrisOkay, yeah.
AdamIllustrations there, it's got his very sort of distinct look.
AdamAnd
ChrisAnd so is Hellboy good, bad or chaotic neutral?
AdamSo I suppose
AdamNo, he's good.
ChrisIs he?
ChrisOkay.
ChrisSo what is.
ChrisWhat is his.
ChrisWhat's his purpose?
ChrisHe he comes from hell.
AdamOh.
ChrisOr.
AdamWell, that's that sort of does bear into what happened.
AdamBut basically he is found as a baby demon and is looked after by a professor who is played by John Hurt in the Guillermo del Toro films.
AdamSo I feel I could do it in his voice to continue.
AdamAnd I raised Hellboy from that tiny imp.
AdamAnd basically he runs a place called the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development.
ChrisOkay.
AdamI think that's it.
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd yeah, that they basically investigate, that is the X-Files, so they investigate that sort of but although it's a group like an agency, one of their agents happens to be this Hellspawn.
AdamWho.
AdamObviously has an affinity for the supernatural because he is supernatural.
ChrisYeah.
Adambut but the so the comics would sort of like have.
AdamLike it had origin and sort of explained itself, but then the comic did what comics do of it.
AdamIt just would you had an issue or a couple of issues of just a storyline.
AdamAnd basically, the reason there should be a Hellboy TV series is because it's the classic.
AdamLike Hellboy turns up in a town, meets someone who's got a supernatural problem and it gets solved.
ChrisOh.
ChrisOkay.
AdamSo it's like, you know, he's it's like the sort of X-Files agent.
ChrisIs it, yeah.
AdamDo you know what I mean?
AdamIt doesn't need, it doesn't need like a big fucking over-arching plot and this this is what this feels like.
AdamLike this is because it is based on one of the comics, I think it's like three issues or something called The Crooked Man.
AdamAnd.
AdamIt's yeah, so a lot a lot of it is pretty much close to that.
AdamBut that is one of those sort of Hellboy where it's just, oh, this is the current story, not some sort of like, you know, it's not a sort of.
AdamProgression or a character arc or anything like that, you know.
AdamAnd
AdamYeah, and I think this was just rather fucking well done.
AdamAnd.
AdamIt was so I didn't I didn't know anyone.
AdamIn it, oh, apart from Joseph Marcel turns up.
AdamWho was Jeffrey, the butler in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
AdamAnd he's in Remembrance of the Daleks.
AdamWhich matters to me.
AdamAnd
Adambut the guy playing Hellboy is a guy called Jack Casey who's apparently apparently was in The Strain, the del Toro Vampire series.
AdamAnd.
AdamHe's in Deadpool 2.
ChrisOkay.
Adamwhich I'm still not seeing.
AdamBut he's Black Tom in.
AdamDeadpool 2.
LeeWhat, you haven't seen Deadpool 2 yet?
AdamNo.
LeeOh, dude.
LeeYou're missing out.
AdamI know.
AdamI know.
AdamI'm behind.
ChrisThat's that's another one of the franchises.
ChrisThat's there was one, another one we mentioned the other day.
AdamOh, I'm just not up to date on anything, mate.
ChrisNo, you're on Hellboy.
AdamYou know.
AdamExcept for Hellboy, which everyone else seems to be sort of, but yeah, and it was just
AdamYeah, it was kind of like, it just felt like it was.
AdamMaybe like it was the Christmas special from a couple of years back because it was longer.
AdamDo you know what I mean?
AdamLike you know like when you'd get like the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and then they'd do, they'd do and the Basks or sign of the four at Christmas.
AdamSo they'd have a longer.
AdamLike movie version of it.
AdamAnd that's what this felt like.
AdamAnd it.
AdamYeah, everyone's fucking great in it. I think it really it really feels like reading the comic Hellboy.
AdamMore so than anything else because it does have that sort of, it's not a it's not blankness.
AdamBut it's like, no, this is just an adventure that's happening.
AdamDo you know what I mean?
AdamNot everything has to lead to profundity or anything like that.
AdamYou know, it's just it's story of the week, monster of the week.
ChrisYeah.
AdamWith a monster.
AdamSo.
AdamYeah.
Adambut and no.
AdamI just thought and but the.
AdamAnd it was directed by Brian Taylor, who did The Crank films, which I should not like.
ChrisOh.
AdamThose films.
AdamI fucking think they're brilliant.
AdamThey're just both of them are fucking mental.
AdamWhich.
ChrisI've only seen the first one, but I didn't like it way more than I thought I should as well.
AdamYeah, yeah, and and pretty much you get exactly the same with the second one.
AdamLike I I can't believe that Jason Statham has hoodwinked me.
AdamInto enjoying one of his films.
AdamThe cheeky bastard.
AdamYou know.
AdamIt's sort of.
AdamYeah.
AdamIt's yeah, anyway, but it so and the other film he did was Mom and Dad.
AdamThe Nicholas Cage film.
LeeOh, that.
LeeGreat.
ChrisAll right.
AdamBut but that's the thing.
AdamIs this doesn't feel like that at all.
AdamIt's very it's quite.
AdamThe other thing that it sort of sits with the the like the comics are quite stark and they're quite sort of almost expressionistic in places and stuff like that.
AdamAnd this is this is very moody.
AdamAnd it has action sequences.
AdamAnd I've seen a lot of people, I'll get it over with now, a lot of people have said that the spider at the start is shit.
AdamYeah, the spider at the start is shit.
AdamBut the spider in anything that CG is shit.
ChrisYeah.
AdamYeah.
AdamThey're all it's always shit, so, you know, they could why blow their fucking money?
AdamAnd it it fulfills its function.
AdamBut and it's over with at the start, basically.
AdamThat's just.
AdamAnd then the rest of it is kind of a lot more eerie and a lot more sort of, but and you get the lovely thing of because that's the best bit about Hellboy.
AdamIt's probably I've missed the whole point when I'm explaining to you the draw of the character, is Hellboy really doesn't give a fuck.
AdamHe finds it all annoying and sort of just, oh, for fuck's sake, this happened.
ChrisI think I think that's that's me like every day really, with a lot of things that I I think I'd quite like the sound of this.
AdamHe treats the supernatural like plumbing.
Chris
AdamDo you know what I mean?
AdamYes, it is a pain in the arse.
AdamYes, it is a disaster.
AdamAnd yes, we are going to have to do something about it.
AdamBut for fuck's sake.
AdamYou know.
AdamSo, yeah, I think it's sort of like I think the yeah, like I say, this Jack Casey is I think he does really well as Hellboy.
AdamAnd like I say, I'm just like pissed off that this isn't, oh, I caught that and I can now go back and watch the first series.
AdamAnd then slowly become disappointed by series four or you know, whatever.
LeeExcellent.
LeeI'll have to check it out.
LeeI didn't realize there was another one.
LeeI say, the one that came out a couple of years ago, I tried.
LeeI loved the first two films, so I was really excited when they were going to reboot it.
LeeAnd then I don't I think I got about half an hour in and was like, this is awful.
AdamYeah.
Lee
LeeIt was fantastic cost, but it just didn't gel at all.
LeeSo.
AdamYeah.
AdamWhereas I think.
AdamThat and that's the thing that because I haven't.
AdamI haven't seen that.
Adambut this so Crooked Man is nothing to do with that either.
AdamIt's do you know what I mean?
AdamThis is this is essentially reboot 2.
AdamYeah.
Adamand I would as I say.
AdamI think, yeah, just yeah, make some more.
AdamThis is.
AdamJust make episodes.
AdamI like films as episodes in this, you know.
LeeExcellent. I'll definitely have to be checking that out.
Lee
LeeChris, what did you watch next?
ChrisYeah, so for this one.
ChrisAs I was looking through the titles of slightly unusual esoteric horror films.
ChrisI saw Slumber Party Massacre.
ChrisAnd I thought that sounds terrible, I don't want to watch that at all.
ChrisAnd but of course it it triggered a little, yeah, but there was Dude Bro Party Massacre 3.
Chris
ChrisAnd I thought, well, let me just read.
ChrisJust read a little bit about it, so I saw it.
ChrisI saw because.
ChrisI normally don't like to read too much or know too much.
ChrisAlthough I do like to know if they're comedies.
ChrisBut.
ChrisAnd it turns out, in fact, for this one, that was both useful and bad, but anyway, all right.
ChrisSo have either of you heard of this?
LeeYes.
AdamI've heard of it, I haven't seen it.
ChrisAha, all right, well, so 1982.
ChrisYear of the spectrum for any nerds listening, that's just that's how that is in my head.
Chris
ChrisDirected by Amy Holden Jones, don't know.
ChrisWritten by, and this was the bit I thought, what, feminist author Rita Mae Brown.
ChrisAnd I thought, there's a film called Slumber Party Massacre.
ChrisIt's a slasher film and it's written by a feminist author.
ChrisThat's very confusing.
ChrisSo I thought, I'm going to have to give this one a go.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisTurned out it was written as a parody, however, the studio filmed it as a straight film.
AdamYeah, didn't get it.
ChrisNo.
LeeNo.
ChrisBut what's interesting is that doesn't seem to have ruined it and you still are able to see everything that the author was getting across.
ChrisAnd I would say, and I did read a little bit about it.
ChrisI think it did achieve it in my mind, so it turned out another one.
ChrisAnother social commentary film, which horror seems to do so well and we seem to cover a lot of.
Chris
ChrisSimilar to Troll Hunter in that sort of sense.
ChrisOr ruining the world.
ChrisBut yeah, so you know.
ChrisThe fact that how do you turn a slasher and a very like in the sense it's not trying to be too clever.
ChrisIt's not trying to do anything too weird horror style.
ChrisIt is a very straight forward slasher.
Chris
ChrisHow do you present everything that you get in a typical slasher, such as Friday 13th?
ChrisAll of the elements and still make it so that you're like.
ChrisYeah, that's not actually misogynistic in its presentation.
Chris
ChrisSo yeah, I think I think she pretty much managed it.
Chris
ChrisAnd it was it was definitely better than I expected.
Chris
ChrisIt does have funny bits, maybe not because the way it's shot, not as obvious as it could have been.
Chris
ChrisBut yeah, you still get lots of women getting naked at points as you'd expect.
ChrisThat's not the reason I watched it.
ChrisBut.
ChrisYeah.
Chrisyou get a male killer with a very phallic looking weapon.
Chris
ChrisBut yeah, there there's a few nice bits in it.
ChrisSo.
ChrisIt it did progress well and even to the end, I thought, okay, yeah, this this is all right.
ChrisThis is keeping my attention and
ChrisThat was fun.
AdamI was surprised you.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisBecause like so we we haven't watched a massive amount of slasher.
ChrisYou know, I know we've all said it's not the one, it's not the category that we would tend to go for.
ChrisBut it is interesting that there have been people, I mean like the Tucker and Dale.
ChrisYou know.
ChrisLike there's been quite a few where they have managed to do a twist that makes a slasher type film far more interesting.
ChrisSo I was kind of fascinated to see one that doesn't try to twist it too much.
ChrisStill achieve something like this.
AdamYeah.
AdamStill at the sort of same.
AdamYou're still at the period where it is enough to do a slasher film straight.
ChrisYeah.
LeeWell.
ChrisSo.
AdamYou know, that's all you need is someone goes around and kills a lot of people.
ChrisYeah.
AdamYou know, it hasn't got, it hasn't because 82 you sort of hasn't got to the sort of more inventive phases.
ChrisI mean, I think that that is still pretty early.
ChrisIs it?
ChrisYeah.
AdamYeah.
LeeI think that's why we don't cover so many slashers.
LeeNot because we don't because we particularly dislike them.
LeeBut because they don't leave a lot to talk about, it is just about seeing the kills.
LeeThe majority of the time.
ChrisYeah, right.
ChrisRight.
LeeSo.
Lee
ChrisIt feels like that's fun for the first few times of that sort of film.
ChrisAnd then you're like, yeah, you know, I've seen it.
LeeAny.
LeeAnd again, they're they're good to see because of the inventive kills.
LeeBut they're not as exciting to talk about, which is why we don't generally bring them up quite so often, I think.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisYou don't really get a deep satisfaction afterwards.
ChrisEven if it was kind of fun, you know.
ChrisAnd and some of them could be in the background, you know, maybe that's fine.
ChrisBut yeah.
ChrisSo.
Chris
ChrisIt would have been interesting to see if it had been shot as a parody and kept to the original idea.
LeeI believe the sequels do more.
ChrisOh, that's interesting.
ChrisSo I did notice there were sequels, so yeah, okay, well I'd be quite happy to check them out then.
AdamContinue the voyage, sir.
AdamLet us know.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisYeah.
AdamExplore.
AdamI'm.
LeeYeah.
LeeWell done.
Leemy next movie, I'm not sure if it's one Adam has seen or not.
LeeI'd never heard of it.
LeeSomebody posted some images on Instagram.
AdamIt was a filthy lie, whatever those images were.
LeeAnd I saw them and immediately went, why have I never seen this film?
Lee
LeeIt's very strange, it's a film called V Viy.
AdamYes.
LeeIt's made in the Soviet Union in 1967.
Lee
LeeAnd I thought it's one of those, I looked at the images and I was like, it's one of those too good to be true, it looks too cool.
LeeThe film isn't going to be anything like that.
LeeAnd I couldn't have been more wrong, it was absolutely dynamite.
LeeThe score is a little strange on it in places.
LeeBut.
LeeOh, it was outstanding, so the story, very quickly.
Leea group of young men who are to become monks, basically get a summer holiday and go on a rampage.
LeeAnd end up sleeping in the barn of an old woman who one of them discovers is a witch.
LeeAnd he inadvertently injures her and she dies.
Leebut it turns out that she isn't the old crone that he's seen, but in fact it's a young lady and he is called by the village to be the, basically the overseer.
LeeSo he has to stay with her for three nights from sundown from sundown till sunset.
LeeIn order to.
Leebasically make sure that she makes it to heaven, but what actually happens is every night things get worse and worse and the supernatural occurrences get more and more out of hand.
LeeIt's.
LeeIt's fairly, it's not a comedy, but it's got a lot of comedy elements to it.
AdamIt's yes, exactly like House of, yes.
LeeAnd it's just as bats it as House of as well.
AdamOh, right.
LeeYeah.
Leebut yeah, it's it's absolute gem.
LeeI don't know why I've never stumbled across this before.
Lee
LeeIt's really good, so it so it is obviously in Russian, I believe, is the language.
LeeSo.
LeeIt is subtitled, but it it's it's just.
LeeIt's a really good, really creepy, it goes a bit bat shit in the last three minutes.
LeeBut the film prepares you for the fact that it's going to go nuts and you have to be ready to ride it, a bit like House of again.
Leeyeah, it's it's really good fun.
LeeIt's a really well put together film.
LeeIt's a really well-paced film.
LeeAs it's only an hour and 15 or what, but it it feels it feels like it's as long as it needs to be.
LeeYou know, it doesn't doesn't feel like you don't get enough character development, but at the same time, it doesn't feel like they've tried to stretch it out and it should be a 40-minute, you know, 45-minute movie or whatever.
Leeyeah, it's it's just absolutely brilliant, so I can't wait to see what they do next.
LeeBecause.
LeeYeah.
LeeReally, really good.
LeeSo I heartily recommend everyone.
LeeGo and check out, it's it's available for free online and.
LeeYeah.
LeeIt's absolutely brilliant.
LeeReally, really good.
Lee
LeeChris.
LeeYou are up next, I believe.
ChrisYep.
ChrisSo this one I have mentioned before, I don't remember what either of you said about it.
Christhis is probably my favorite overall.
ChrisDidn't necessarily expect to like it as much as I did.
ChrisDidn't know a lot about it except what the reason I had mentioned it previously.
ChrisWas it was on like the top 100 horror scenes from horror films, I think.
ChrisSomething like that.
ChrisAnd it is called Train to Busan.
LeeI still haven't seen it.
ChrisYou still haven't seen it.
ChrisRight.
ChrisOkay.
ChrisYou're right.
ChrisOkay.
ChrisWell.
ChrisSo I assume you, Lee, haven't rushed to watch it because it's zombie.
LeeI think it I think it came out at the tail end at the point where I'd got so sick of zombies.
LeeDespite the fact it came out and everyone went, this is the best zombie film that's come out since 2008 later.
LeeI was already picked out with them even more than usual.
LeeSo I just couldn't.
ChrisWell, so that is it.
ChrisSo they use so the zombies in it are the 28 Day Later.
ChrisSpeedy type zombie, rather than the Romero, yeah, shambling ones.
Chrisbut yeah, so I didn't realize it was as recent as it was.
ChrisI didn't pick that up when I'd heard of it previously.
Chris2016, which as you just mentioned.
Chris
ChrisYeah, and again, it's got quite a social commentary, political, corporate.
Chris
ChrisBut what I do like, it's essentially it's core themes.
ChrisHumanity versus selfishness.
ChrisIt's got a whole part of, you know, how do you act in these situations?
ChrisWhich.
ChrisI think we did say the zombie films have been used for, you know, the whole human dynamic when you're all in this situation together.
ChrisSo I but I think it does that very well.
Chris
ChrisYeah, it's got some great archetypes in there.
Chris
ChrisThe it is subtitled again, so, you know, I still always wonder how how much can you enjoy a horror action film when you're having to read subtitles?
ChrisTotally not a problem at all, worked really well.
Chris
ChrisAlso it is set on trains, and I thought, can that work very well with zombies?
ChrisYou know.
ChrisYou're thinking how are they going to explain this and again, the the ways that they did, I was like, okay, yeah, that's pretty good.
ChrisThat that works for me.
Chris
ChrisIt is a bit claustrophobic, but not too claustrophobic, it's definitely paced well.
Chris
ChrisAnd the scenes change enough.
ChrisSo I was like, yeah, no.
ChrisYou really are managing to do this in a way that I would not have expected would be that easy.
Chris
ChrisI liked the actors, I did recognise the main actor from Squid Game.
AdamOh, okay.
ChrisYeah.
Adam
ChrisI can't remember who he was in.
ChrisHe was in.
AdamI'm still not seeing.
Chrisseason 2 of Squid Game, if I remember if he was in it or not.
ChrisOkay.
ChrisWell.
ChrisSo.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisYou know, I mean, he he is very effective, I would say.
ChrisGetting across the emotion and his his selfishness.
ChrisSo.
Chris
ChrisYeah, and then what I was looking forward to mostly, until I realized actually this is a really good film, was the scene where it's like so many zombies on screen at once.
ChrisAll running like crazy, and and again, it works.
ChrisIt's it's a great scene.
ChrisIt is quite a unique, yeah, you know, because it's that is it could just going to get too ridiculous.
ChrisRight.
ChrisBut you know, great when someone manages to to deal with that.
ChrisAnd.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisSo for me, it is now.
ChrisIt's definitely a zombie film, I'd watch again.
ChrisIt's definitely film, I'd watch again.
Chrisand it's got some unique aspects that definitely make it stand out.
ChrisSo.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisI'd absolutely.
ChrisI'd definitely recommend this.
ChrisYeah.
AdamSo maybe I do.
AdamMaybe I do need to check it out.
AdamBecause I mean, this is I'm the same as you, Lee, I think I'd just got so tired of zombies.
AdamBut when it came out, even though I heard so many people going, this is fucking great.
AdamYeah.
AdamI was like, I just can't.
LeeEverybody was on side for it.
LeeEverybody was talking about this when it came out.
LeeBut yeah, as you say, I was just like, no, no, nothing could bring me back to zombies.
LeeThey they are one of my least favorite and I have been burnt out with them even more than usual.
LeeSo I just couldn't.
ChrisIt definitely doesn't, you know, like it is a zombie film, but really does have enough of the elements.
ChrisWhere it's like.
ChrisNo, I'm enjoying this as a film whether there's zombies in it or not.
ChrisReally.
AdamThat's the best thing where zombies are incidental almost, you know.
ChrisReally.
ChrisSo.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisI would.
ChrisAbsolutely.
ChrisI'd definitely recommend this.
ChrisIt's.
LeeGood.
LeeI'm glad you have because I think Adam and I have just added it to our watch lists.
Leeso for my next movie, or final movie, should I say?
LeeI watched a film from last year, an independent movie called The Book of the Witch.
Adam
Leeso there's nobody in it, you'll know.
LeeIt's a story of a young lady who is.
LeeShe's a security guard by night, and she's so terrified of the idea of death.
LeeThat she's basically heard of a legend of a witch who survived since the Salem witch trials by reading a spell from her book and drawing the life out of young men.
Lee
LeeAnd basically lives off of that, and she decides that she's going to find this witch and steal her book so that she never dies.
Lee
LeeAnd it's one of those, somebody I follow on Instagram, who does a lot of indie stuff, put it up and said, I've just watched this, I've really enjoyed it.
LeeSo I was like, eh, I'll have a look.
LeeManaged to find it for free online legally.
LeeWatched it.
LeeIt's amazing.
LeeIt was really, really good.
LeeIt's one of those fantastic jobs where they've taken they've taken a great story, they've allowed it to play out in its own time.
LeeIt's only an hour and 13 minutes long.
LeeBut it's exactly as long as it needs to be.
ChrisYeah.
Lee
LeeBut the.
Leedespite the budgetary constraints.
Lee
Lee
Leethe budget tree constraint.
ChrisAs as we are experiencing now.
LeeYeah, yes.
LeeSo.
LeeThey managed to, they don't overstretch themselves with the effects and things and with the.
LeeThe locations and stuff.
LeeSo despite the fact it's very low budget, they make it look amazing and nothing looks shonky because they don't try anything that they can't they can't they can't do.
ChrisYeah, that's good.
LeeBut it doesn't feel like.
LeeIt doesn't feel like the story's been reined in in order to allow for the budget.
LeeIt just it's yeah, it was an excellent film.
LeeIt was one of those.
LeeIt was on a whim.
LeeI had a night with nothing on.
LeeAnd I thought it's online for free, it's an independent movie, I'll give it a go.
LeeYeah, and it's just absolutely amazed by.
LeeSo it's Joshua Sudan is the name.
LeeI'm saying that correctly, Sudan or Sodan.
Lee
LeeBut yeah, I I don't know what else they have done, but I will definitely be looking out.
LeeIn fact, I mean, I could just click on the IMDB.
LeeI mean, it's a look.
Lee
LeeYeah, so they have done a few other films.
Leemainly as a director, oh, a director and writer.
LeeBut yeah, I will be working through that back catalog to see if there's any more horror in there.
LeeBecause.
LeeYeah, I was really surprised with this.
LeeIt's yeah, it's really good fun.
LeeIt's a really well put together film.
LeeIt's a really well-paced film.
LeeAs it's only an hour and 15 or what, but it it feels it feels like it's as long as it needs to be.
LeeYou know, it doesn't doesn't feel like you don't get enough character development, but at the same time, it doesn't feel like they've tried to stretch it out and it should be a 14-minute, you know, 45-minute movie or whatever.
Lee
LeeYeah, it's it's just absolutely brilliant.
LeeSo I can't wait to see what they do next.
LeeBecause.
LeeYeah, really, really good.
LeeSo I heartily recommend everyone go and check it out.
LeeIt's it's available for free online and.
LeeYeah.
LeeIt's.
LeeAbsolutely brilliant.
LeeReally, really good.
Leeso we should probably wrap it up there.
LeeSo, honorable mentions, has anyone got any honorable mentions they'd like to drop in quickly?
AdamWell.
AdamI've I've got one, but I'll also drop in Joe Watson's been in touch.
AdamHi, Joe.
LeeHey.
AdamHey, Joe.
AdamThank you for your continued support, especially if you've made it this far into the show.
Adam
Adamyes.
AdamAnd he's been he's been recommending a few, I was hoping that I might actually fit one in to sort of before the show, before we recorded.
Adam
AdamBut just didn't get the chance.
AdamBut he's
AdamHe's recommended, Ready or Not.
LeeYes, I've seen it.
LeeIt's great.
AdamOh, nice.
AdamOkay.
LeeI double checked, I could be wrong.
AdamShit.
Adamhe also recommended the Varium, which I know Bobby from not for everyone has.
AdamAlso, I'm sure has told me to watch that, so that's definitely going higher up the list.
AdamJoe said it left him feeling disjointed.
AdamWhich.
AdamI that that is you know, that's that's me sold.
AdamYou know, he also recommend, Oddity.
AdamI think I think a lot I think I think a lot of these are on Shudder actually, so that's.
AdamThat's why.
Adambut yes, he recommended Oddity.
AdamAnd just just the other day he recommended the Rule of Jenny Pen, which is a film I've sort of had my eye on anyway.
AdamThat's with John Lithgow and Jeffrey Rush.
LeeOh, nice.
AdamOh, nice.
AdamThat's quite.
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd basically.
AdamJeffrey Rush is a judge who has a stroke and ends up in an old folks home and John Lithgow is one of the other patients who after dark just runs a fucking brutal regime of humiliation and weirdness and yeah.
LeeInteresting.
AdamSo yeah.
Adamwhich.
AdamJoe also said.
Adambut if you have got any parents in an old folks home at the moment, you might want to give her.
LeeYes, I've just checked.
LeeReady or Not, yes, I have watched it, it was fucking brilliant.
LeeAbsolutely loved that.
AdamOh, fantastic.
Adammy and my honorable mention is a weird one.
AdamIt's more just to say it's been it's been just over a year since we lost our good friend Westley.
AdamYeah.
Adam
AdamAnd I watched because if if we'd have continued doing Mos Eisley Happy Hour.
AdamWhat I what my thought was is, we'll go off and just do films that start were rip rip offs of Star Wars.
AdamAnd.
AdamFilms that Star Wars was influenced by.
AdamSo you do like you do like Hidden Fortress one week.
AdamAnd then do Flash Golden the next week.
LeeOh, Hidden Fortress.
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd.
Adam
AdamAnd yeah.
AdamOne of the films that I always thought would be.
AdamWould be Battle Beyond the Stars.
AdamAnd I don't know if anyone remembers it, it's 1980, but this is one of a a huge long list of things that I thought were all one thing as a kid.
AdamSo it's like.
AdamThis, Flash Gordon, Battlestar Galactica, just loads of stuff all rammed in my but Buck Rogers, it's all in there somehow.
Adam
AdamYou know, it was as I got older, I was like, oh, I can distinguish what the difference is.
AdamBut Battle Beyond the Stars.
AdamYeah, just watching it the other day and it was like, do you know what?
AdamThis ain't off bad.
AdamYou know.
AdamIt's the James Cameron's doing the effects, so they're not too bad.
AdamYou know.
AdamNot too bad.
AdamJames Cameron's doing the effects.
AdamSo they are, okay, they're not up to industrial light and magic, but they're pretty damn fucking good.
AdamIt's so clearly a rip off of Star Wars.
AdamBut it's also so clearly a rip off of the Magnificent Seven.
LeeOh.
AdamWhich which was a rip off of Seven Samurai, so it's sort of it's lovely that it's it's come kind of feels like it's come from the same space as Star Wars.
AdamYou know.
AdamAnd you know, it's sort of like, oh, it's Samurai films via Westerns.
AdamYou know.
AdamIt's sort of and but yeah.
AdamAnd you got Robert Vaughn and George Peppard, Sybil Danning and John Saxon.
AdamJohn Saxon as the villain, the sort of.
AdamBut yeah, and it's just one of those things that I watched and there are a few quite disturbing sequences in it.
AdamOr disturbing enough when I was like watching it when I was like seven or whatever.
AdamLike.
AdamActually, you know, that's that's just not on.
AdamWon't show that to my son, that's the image that's going to stay in the child's mind for a whole week.
Adam
AdamYeah, and it's just sort of like, there's a there's a weird little grimness to it.
AdamThat I quite like.
AdamAnd yeah, just.
AdamSo if you've got fuckle better.
AdamAnd James Horner does the music, and so it's very much sort of, yeah, it's.
AdamLike, you know, it's a dry run for when he does Star Trek and stuff like that.
AdamSo it's like.
Adamyeah.
AdamSo watch Battle Beyond the Stars.
AdamGood evening.
LeeSounds good.
AdamGood evening.
Lee
LeeSo we should probably wrap it up there.
LeeSo, honorable mentions, has anyone got any honorable mentions they'd like to drop in quickly?

Adamyeah.
AdamSo, watch Better Be on the Stars.
AdamGood evening.
LeeSounds good. I listened to a podcast recently with Joe Cornish of Attack the Block who we've covered previously.
