LeeRight right we are now officially recording. Right exciting shake your tits it's Friday. So
ChrisIs that a phrase?
LeeI used to work with a woman who always used to say it.
ChrisI like it I'm writing it down.
UnknownOh she's not listening
ChrisThis is the best bit.
LeeI normally leave all this preamble in.
UnknownDo you?
ChrisYeah shake your tits it's Friday that's the new that's the new welcome to horror slogan that is.
LeeAll over it.
ChrisYeah we t-shirts with it a lot.
LeeGood evening and welcome to horror I'm Lee.
ChrisI'm Chris.
AdamI am Adam.
UnknownI'm Jennifer.
LeeThat's right we are joined by lady Jennifer as this is her birthday pick it'd be wrong for her not to be here really. so for our main feature this evening we watched the absolute stone cold classic that is let the right one in.
LeeI'm so I was like a proud parent when Jennifer said
ChrisOh I get to make a birthday choice and I was like oh shit.
LeeYeah of course she can and he said can we watch let the right one in and I was like oh yes yes yes
UnknownListeners know I don't sound like that.
ChrisOh I was just thinking how perfect an impersonation
UnknownWhat's wrong with your ears?
ChrisYou never hear yourself as you sound.
UnknownWhat's wrong with your mouth?
ChrisIn in my head I sound I've got a lot of really thick Mexican accent so
Chrisit's a surprise when I hear this episode back like who's that?
Leebut yes so before we get stuck into this although we're all I'm sure very excited to discuss it. Chris have you had the opportunity I know it's short because we're recording early so don't feel under pressure but have you had the opportunity at all to watch anything in the last week?
ChrisYes let me just switch my Wi-Fi because it's going a bit funny one second. And I'm back am I back?
UnknownNo.
ChrisNo you still
LeeBack in the room.
ChrisI'm back I'm back now.
AdamIt's still it's still a sad clown icon.
ChrisOh no come on come on I'm shaking my phone do something. There we go there we go. Right so yes of course of course I watched something amazing and so perfect once again it was Eli Roth's history of horror I skipped an episode and went straight to the vampire one knowing knowing a little bit about this film but not a lot.
ChrisAnd and I was even careful when it when they suddenly mentioned let the right one in the masterpiece as they called it. I for stop quick and I stopped it.
ChrisSo I'll tell you what they did cover though and you can see what you think. They they first all talked about Dracula Mhm.
LeeCarl
ChrisNot a big surprise they started with Bella Lugosi.
AdamOh.
ChrisThen and so I haven't seen any of these. I've only heard him mentioned one or 10,000 times. So so we're left to look forward to.
AdamI don't think we've done Oh no he was in the Wolf Man.
ChrisOh was he?
AdamHe was he was the gypsy called Bella.
UnknownBella yeah.
ChrisSo but he didn't have a big part there was he was only in it for Was it five minutes?
AdamYeah yeah.
ChrisAll right but yeah fair enough okay. Now Bella Lugosi as Dracula didn't have fangs I learned.
AdamNo.
ChrisNo you never see any fangs.
AdamNo and then Christopher Lee ramped it up a bit he had fangs and he was a bit sexy bit erotic. That that was the paradigm shift at that point then
ChrisYeah he shags my basement.
LeeIs that Claire Loxham doesn't she?
AdamShe does actually yes.
LeeSo she'll be excited if we ever watch
AdamClaire is very fond of Christopher Lee. Christopher Lee.
ChrisYeah.
AdamCould you put back on the phone please?
ChrisThen we had Bram Stoker's Dracula from
Adam92
ChrisCoppola yeah oh Francis Ford Coppola yeah.
LeeCoppola yeah.
AdamWith Gary Oldman.
ChrisGary Oldman yeah.
UnknownWinona Ryder.
LeeNow Keanu Reeves.
ChrisYes yeah now I've only seen a bit of it I would like to watch the whole film because I showed some clips and it looks great. I don't know why well you're not a fan Lee
LeeI'm I'm shaking my head violently.
UnknownI guess in comparison to all the better vampire films out there but you know I mean it's a classic and I think it's got its place.
ChrisAll right but that's got Gary Oldman.
LeeIt has.
AdamI think the only thing that goes against it is calling it Bram Stoker's Dracula.
LeeYeah.
ChrisAnd adding loads of stuff that ain't there because it's really French.
LeeOne of the furthest from the original source material and then calling it Bram Stoker's Dracula.
ChrisWell okay.
UnknownThe Keanu Reeves.
LeeWell no when I Keanu Reeves terribly recast but that's not against Keanu Reeves like
ChrisHe's still awesome.
LeeIt
UnknownIt should just be
ChrisBut maybe not he's just
UnknownOne of the Wicks.
LeeJoe Wick little skinny bloke with long hair
ChrisYeah yeah Joe Wick is never shot anyone because they shot his dog. Carl
AdamHe can't and he can't say he can't say Wesley Snipes either.
AdamNo seriously look it up he's a right prick of himself.
ChrisWell more so.
LeeMore of a Bella
AdamYeah.
ChrisAre we still talking about Joe Wick?
LeeYes.
ChrisExercise guy I still I quite like him.
LeeOf course you do.
ChrisYeah he's he's all right. Why why don't we like him what's he done wrong?
LeeHe's just a little bit positive and a bit happy.
ChrisYeah but that but that that is good when you're trying to get kids to do exercise.
UnknownYeah.
AdamHe did punch my grandmother in the tank.
AdamNow that's not true but it would explain how I feel. So yeah.
UnknownMaybe we could start that rumour Adam and see if it carries on.
AdamYeah yeah.
ChrisShe's so
AdamShe'd been dead five years as well sick bastard.
ChrisNow that's getting more on topic.
ChrisSo right so so Bram Stoker's Dracula he changed to become a bit of a tragic character that was a a new element. you know so that's good and then Anne Rice which I'm also assuming Lee's not a big fan of.
AdamNo
UnknownYeah.
ChrisWell I really liked him in Queen of the Vampire. And that's possibly one of the better roles that Tom Cruise I mean Tom Cruise does do a good job in films just not in real life.
UnknownHe generally does as an actor I've got time for him just not as a
ChrisYeah he does.
AdamBeing a being
Unknownactor not being human the rest of the time it'd be okay.
LeeMy my downfall with Anne Rice is my downfall my problem with Anne Rice should I say sorry is that yes that she did interview the vampire and then all of this as as we'll talk about
ChrisYeah.
Leemine and Adam's hatred of Sexy Drac came from there and that's why I written vampire movies off for an entire decade pretty much.
ChrisSexy Drac Sexy Drac get off my back.
LeeIt was terrible.
ChrisI wrote songs about it Chris.
AdamWell well I did
ChrisBeing a bit of a goth in the teen years I quite liked it.
AdamSee the worst part for me is I actually liked interview with the vampire then I read the book
ChrisOh wait now
AdamAnd that pissed me off slightly.
ChrisNow that's interesting.
AdamAnd and then I read whatever the follow-up the vampire Lesat and at that point I was I was ready to like blind someone with a soldering iron.
ChrisYeah.
ChrisWell I see that's funny because because I thought the books were awesome. I thought they got better and better and they got more into philosophy and more into like time and it just got crazy.
AdamIt's just when Lesat suddenly becomes Marilyn Manson.
ChrisSo I don't I don't actually remember the book Lesat someone
AdamWrite up my tunes that this
ChrisRight yeah.
LeeI I sort of think I think I'm thinking of Memnoch the son. It's been a long time.
ChrisOh yeah there is Memnoch the destroyer or something Memnoch the devil.
AdamYeah but I'm I'm sure I seem to remember them getting a lot deeper than interview did and yeah I was impressed with it I mean again you know I read it when I was quite young.
LeeWell the Queen of the Damned one of those as well
AdamYes.
LeeYeah and that's a massive pile of steaming dog shit.
UnknownI don't know if that was Queen of the film though not
ChrisNo the film wasn't great but the book I still would say as far as I remember it was excellent. I'll have to re-read it one day.
AdamI don't think I ever got to Queen of the Damned actually I think I just got stopped reading the vampire Lesat I was like quit at that point.
ChrisOh okay well that's that's
ChrisSo you're you're a you're an early quitter.
AdamYeah.
LeeWith Anne Rice I think to be on chapter three is quite an achievement to be honest.
UnknownI'll take it all the way.
UnknownWell I would give it he is upstairs you can borrow it and give it a read and
LeeI haven't got time to read stuff I care about I'm never going to read anything
AdamYeah.
ChrisAll right well anyway so so that was that was you know sexy romantic quite a bit of gay culture in there then we got True Blood. So what's what's the view on that?
LeeSame same fair enough.
UnknownI I liked that I read some of the books but again it was more veering to the oh let's get women involved in horror perhaps you know because it's a bit more about the relationships and the you know a bit more like a soap opera but with vampires so it was entertaining but I can Lee is making the decision making the decision.
ChrisAll right well
ChrisWell now
AdamIt was when you said soap opera and I just lost the will to live I was because I'll I'll be honest I've never seen True Blood I kind of assumed it wasn't my thing but I've never like I can't speak against it having never seen it but I'm kind of assuming that it weren't going to be up my street.
ChrisNo I'm I'm getting a bit mixed up with all the True films we've got True Romance True Lies and True Blood and True Blood
LeeYeah I'm nothing like one another in any way shape or form.
ChrisTrue Romance
AdamTrue Romance is Tony Scott directing Quentin Tarantino's first script True Lies is Arnold Schwarzenegger and what's
UnknownIt's mine yeah.
Adamand Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Arnold as spies and Art Malik jumps on a Harrier jump jet. And then there's True Blood so I think there is a sort of there's essentially a lot of differences.
ChrisWhat's the one that Lee likes?
LeeTrue Lies.
ChrisTrue Lies.
LeeIt's a 90s movie from the 80s it's awesome.
ChrisFair enough.
AdamIs that is I am sure that's 90s because I saw that at the bloody cinema.
LeeIt ain't 90s oh it ain't 90s you're right sorry yeah but one you know when he was still like punching justice into the face of anybody you'd stand still on her.
AdamYeah.
ChrisWell well now
AdamIt's when he rides a horse in a lift that's when it's the
UnknownLee I've got no problem with any of that or jumping onto a jump jet like I I I I I think it's all fantastic it it's lunacy obviously but
AdamIt's all good.
AdamYeah.
LeeIt's
ChrisExcept for lunacy.
AdamYeah.
ChrisAll right now now I'm going to get you really excited the next one up was Lost Boys.
UnknownYay.
AdamUh-huh.
LeeGood movie.
ChrisYeah yeah but but they do have a bit of dark sexy elements in it. Just it's not too much.
AdamIt doesn't become the driving force of it I don't think.
ChrisNo.
LeeYeah.
AdamI think there's a it's clearly there's a lot of vampiric eye candy for the ladies. But it's not like it's not like
ChrisThat's not the main yeah.
AdamYeah it's not oh don't you feel sorry for him because they get to remain young and live forever and like kill people with impunity no I don't I think you're unlucky cunt.
ChrisNow I thought it's funny Joel Joel Schumacher said he didn't want to make excuses for the movie he just wanted to make the best teenage vampire film ever or die trying fair play I think he probably probably achieved that.
LeeI think he did a very good job.
AdamYeah.
ChrisYeah. now it's interesting right who's Mick Garris?
AdamMick Garris is a film director who's done he gathered together the masters of horror and he he's directed quite a few sort of bits and pieces but quite a few Stephen King adaptations actually.
Chrisokay.
AdamWhat's that?
ChrisOh that makes sense well he's he's commented I think on in every episode so far and I thought I've heard the name I might be mixing it with Mark Garris but you know
AdamI I I think I think weirdly enough I think you're in the right ballpark in a way in so much as much in the same way as you couldn't get rid of Mark Garris if you were if you were doing a documentary about horror in the UK you would not be able to stop Mark Garris from being in it I see no matter how hard you try and I think Mick Garris would be much the same for an American audience.
UnknownYeah.
AdamI think he would definitely be he you know he's he's out there
ChrisHe's been there.
AdamYeah.
LeeHe's done some he has done some cracking films though just checking his filmography here because I've got to admit I didn't recognise the name yeah Hocus Pocus the Fly two and Critters two so you know
AdamYeah oh yeah no he was yeah he did
UnknownAnd Critters included.
ChrisAll right.
LeeYeah.
UnknownHow don't you say?
LeeHow don't you say and he is
ChrisI think I should watch that.
AdamAre you sure you're not look you're not looking
LeeHe did Writers.
Chrisno it's directors you people looking
AdamIn his directors bit.
LeeOh he's got even more in directors so
UnknownHey Critters two still Freddy's Nightmares.
AdamYeah.
LeeYeah.
AdamHe def- definitely did
UnknownAll the Stand Stephen King
AdamHe did the Shining like the TV version of the Shining he did
UnknownOh yeah.
UnknownHappy Town
LeeOh Happy Town which we really liked he yeah he directed one episode.
UnknownYeah lots of good stuff.
LeeYeah.
ChrisFair play.
UnknownYeah.
ChrisUp next we've got Fright Night.
LeeYes.
AdamWhich we've covered.
ChrisYes.
LeeEpisode
AdamOh Rice knows.
ChrisDon't know.
LeeThat's pretty what we like fucking episode there's no point in asking me what
UnknownLook in the comments below and someone would have
LeeThey want
ChrisAnd then
LeePeople should have means Carl tell everyone listen.
ChrisOh that's true then we got Near Dark I don't think they mentioned much about that.
LeeLove it.
AdamFuck them then.
ChrisYeah well well so is this might have been
UnknownSit there talk about bleeding True Blood and you don't get much from here though.
ChrisWell this could have been made and distracted a little bit at this point but I haven't written much about it but then they have got Dust till Dawn which they they didn't mention too much about as well but they did say that the vampire makeup was a bit different than we'd seen previously.
LeeYeah.
ChrisYou know and apparently they had green blood in order to get past certification.
AdamYeah that that dates back to
ChrisThere's a lot of green blood and it's all right.
AdamThat dates back to Evil Dead.
LeeYeah.
Chrisyes yes
AdamLike where they were meant to have blood running through all the walls and everything and then they just chased different colours and yeah.
ChrisYeah. Yeah.
AdamThey're fine with that because it's not recognisable as blood.
ChrisYeah. And then they they talked a bit about the the different roles of each different vampire story film you know not everyone picks or or uses all of the roles you can sort of choose which ones you want.
LeeYeah.
Chrisalthough a lot of them do seem to accept stakes as a a way to kill and sunlight.
AdamYeah.
LeeOne of the things I watched this eve I watched and I'll be covering in a bit yeah was a a vampire movie from China and their roles are totally different so yeah.
AdamWas it Mr. Vampire?
LeeBut it was Mr. Vampire yeah.
AdamOh they're bringing that out on Cry terion or no Eureka I think
UnknownThey are
Adamand I am buying that.
LeeHe's like best part of 30 quid but
AdamOh yeah no I'm but I'm still getting involved yeah.
LeeAbsolute masterpiece sorry Chris.
ChrisFair enough well I look forward to hearing that and and that was it then they mentioned let the right one in and I jumped for the stop button.
LeeI would probably in between that I would have put 30 days of night I think was possibly one of the let me double check the date.
AdamI think it's 30 days of night later.
LeeI am
AdamBecause I think the comic
Leespeak
AdamBecause I think the comic's quite early but the film is later than let the right one in I think.
LeeOh it's the year before 2007
ChrisOh right okay sorry.
Leeyeah because that's what I was going to say when you were saying about vampire movies and I I mentioned Anne Rice she had put me off of vampire movies and I think the only good vampire movie that I remember seeing between interview with the vampire and let the right one in was 30 days of night and that totally blew me away that movie so
ChrisOh okay.
LeeYeah that's a that's a good film we'll have to cover at some point. but yeah but it's good that it it does get the kudos it deserves let the right one in on yeah on that type of a list I I don't feel that you could do this show and miss this film.
Leefor vampire movie certainly.
UnknownFeel like doing a podcast and missing out until someone says let's do it.
LeeShut your poor mouth.
ChrisI can I can honestly say I think that the merest concept that there is any form of organisation behind this whatsoever.
UnknownI did try and I gave up just heard
ChrisYeah oh oh Cats is topical.
LeeOh yes yeah.
UnknownWe've got that in a minute yeah.
LeeWe will so Adam have you ventured into the horrory world of TV or cinema since our last meeting?
Adamonly thing I've caught up with the latest on I think there's two episodes left of the second series of what we do in the Shadows.
LeeYes.
AdamWhich is which is still fantastic I've now seen the Mark Hamill episode.
LeeOh yes.
AdamSo I'm very happy about that. and actually not a not a horror book I did finish reading Lovecraft Country.
LeeOh nice yes I saw that on Instagram yes.
AdamAnd yeah that I'm I really want to see I really enjoyed the book I really want to see what they're going to do with the TV version because there's enough basically I do trust you know Jordan Peele and J.J.
AdamAbrams to not fuck it up. You know to to the point of being a polling but I do you know I would I want to see it and compare it and everything else like that and see what they've changed and stuff.
AdamBut the book the books really the books really good and sort of I would imagine will lend itself to being a TV series because it's kind of like a series of short stories that come together.
AdamWe're not It is it's a proper novel and it's basically like a sort of someone's extended family is the subject of the book and how they're touched by various aspects of weirdness and strangeness that's going on.
Adamand then finally all sort of like ties together at the end but yeah I'd be I'll be really interested to see it because it's very because the point of the thing is is that the book is called Lovecraft Country but that's because someone in it basically the the main one of the main characters in it or the main character and his uncle were both really into sci-fi and horror books.
AdamSo they describe something as being Lovecraft Country because they mistake the county of Aldum they misread it as Arkham at first. And so they're like oh it'll be like Lovecraft Country and they're like I hope not then they go there and it is quite Lovecraft.
AdamSo
UnknownInteresting.
AdamBut yeah so I'd recommend the book and then just yeah now I do I I really am sort of up for seeing the series because I think I think there's enough I think there's enough good material in the book that will turn itself into an episodic series much more so than if you were to adapt it as a film it would probably feel a bit too sort of piecemeal.
AdamBut as a series I can see them really sort of going with it.
UnknownNetflix hello Netflix get calling them you know.
ChrisWell it's HBO and then
LeeOh okay I thought No no no sorry so that's why Adam said so now this wasn't his like Fantasy Football Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams are working on this season done.
UnknownYeah I thought I thought this was Adam's dream to listen to
LeeNo no no.
ChrisNo no.
LeeIt and I agree I think that I I think both of those are definitely trustable with pretty much any material really they've proved themselves as long as it isn't Jordan Peele's own.
Leeand therefore I think
ChrisRules.
Leebut yeah so I I think he's a fantastic filmmaker and I think between him and Abrams I think they'll be able to bring something that you're this excited about I think they'd be a fantastic pair to work with.
AdamYeah I I'm really I really hope that it becomes you know I hope it becomes a hit because I think it's something that's you know the material the material's there to have an interesting TV show and quite frankly HBO need the money these days.
Adambecause Game Game of Thrones is finished and they've also decided they're not going to do thankfully they're not going to do the various stupid prequels and Suicide Squad versions of Game of Thrones where it's like you know oh well you you didn't know about the time that Sam was hanging around with fucking Tyrion or fuck off.
AdamDidn't happen did it?
LeeThat's cursed and Netflix are already on it.
Leeso I have watched a metric fuck ton of stuff since our last meet I don't quite know how I managed to find time to watch all of this but I have.
Leeso literally following our last epi-
ChrisI had a bit of a spate of insomnia and I managed to watch so which is Brew which we discussed.
AdamOh is that the the 60s version of the 80s version of Night of the Evil?
LeeYes with Terry Gar.
UnknownYeah. Was that a good
LeeYeah. It's very different it is an 80s TV sitcom version it's full comedy pretty much. and it felt like bewitched. So then they take the story and turned it into the the only thing that was missing was a last take.
AdamRight okay.
AdamYeah.
LeeYeah but and the story was different in that and so the three women were all friends and Terry Gar's husband basically so he's looking he's trying to get that promotion same as in Night of the Eagle.
LeeAnd she says right you've got to cover yourself in I think it was like chicken blood and cat's urine or something and sleep outside 12 hours under the moon.
LeeAnd he goes look I've had enough of this witchcraft shit. It's stopping now. I don't care what you and your friends are doing. I you know it all stops now and she says well okay but it's not a good idea.
LeeAnd then basically her friends don't realise that he's let that that she's let down the defences for the pair of them. So all the Ouija that they're doing against him basically gets him into the same trouble effectively.
LeeBecause but they're not doing it maliciously. They're all just trying to so basically the idea is similar that you put out into the universe what you want to get and the universe finds a way of making it doable.
UnknownYeah.
LeeSo because the other two women are doing so much to further their husbands' careers the universe finds the best way of doing that is to totally screw him over.
LeeSo he ends up in a massive mess which is no real fault of his. yeah and there isn't an eagle in it. It is it's a giant like eight foot egg that's outside the university.
Leeand it cracks open and a full on demon comes out.
UnknownRight, okay.
Leebut a lot of it's done in the dark so the fact that it's made for TV cheapness is is kind of hidden. It's fairly entertaining. It's the whole thing's on YouTube.
LeeSo
UnknownOh right, cool.
LeeYeah, it's never been out on DVD so it's VHS quality but that's the best you're going to get it so
UnknownYeah.
LeeIt it's worth an hour and a half of your time. I found it I found it interesting as a to see how differently somebody could handle such material effectively.
UnknownYeah. To get a screwball comedy from what is essentially Night of the Demon Two.
LeeYeah, that's what I mean like if if if you hadn't told me and I'd watched them both separately a couple of weeks apart I would never have said it was the same story.
LeeBut yeah it is interesting. I also watched I tried the new Ju-On Origins that's on Netflix.
UnknownOh yes.
LeeI got three episodes in and bailed out really.
UnknownFair enough. Because that's the grudge, isn't it?
LeeYes, yeah.
UnknownYeah.
LeeSo
UnknownThere's not that much there isn't there really to spin out as a prequel or series.
LeeThey've so they've made so the ghost is already there so basically I think from what I've I've gathered is that the ghost that we get to know is a later ghost who is created in this series from a previous so a previous ghost creates the ghost that we then see who is then grudge.
Leeyeah so basically it's just a bit of a nasty spirit turning a house into like a massive mess of domestic violence and nastiness with not enough supernatural element for me.
LeeAnd behaves in a very strange manner that doesn't seem realistic. and I found it a bit boring so
UnknownFair dos.
LeeSo it's not recommend but I would you know put it out there yeah if you're 50/50 don't bother.
Leeas previously mentioned yeah Mr. Vampire I've been watching. I watched that one and I watched the fourth one as well which is Mr. Vampire Saga.
UnknownOh right, okay.
LeeI unfortunately watched them the wrong way round. I watched Saga first. And it was like it was so for Chris who doesn't know and for our listeners who don't know Mr.
LeeVampire is a series of four movies that started in 1985 in China. and it's comedy horror. It primarily it's
Leeprimarily it's it's comedy but it's about vampires. But yeah it's it's it's got a lot of like kung fu elements and stuff so it's a bit like watching a Jackie Chan movie really.
Leebut with vampires. And their vampires are very different so and as Adam knows in their law they hop they sort of jump. They have they jump everywhere. They don't walk.
UnknownYeah and they and you have the curse or the the holding spell is like a a line of paper attached to their forehead pinned to their heads.
LeeThat's right yeah so if you write in chicken's blood on a piece of paper and slap it on their head it stops them in their tracks.
UnknownIs it like how you hypnotise rabbits? Where you sort of have to I don't know pull them along a line their head and their eyes and then they hypnotise No that's how you hypnotise chickens.
UnknownApparently you have to hypnotise rabbits by dazzling them in a bright light. Oh there you go. Lucky I didn't try that one out. Because there's there's a weird thing apparently this thing called lampers.
UnknownAnd lampers are I mean I don't know if you can count it as hunting but it's people who go out with like spotlights. Oh and hypnotise the Hypno hypnotise rabbit and then shoot it and take it home too.
UnknownCheating.
LeeOh yeah lazy hunting there.
UnknownThat is not really hunting. I I wouldn't count it as
Leeyeah and the other thing in the movies is if you have you seen Adam?
UnknownI've seen I've yes I've seen oh no. Is it Mr. I think I've seen Mr. Vampire Two.
Leewhich which I am I've ordered it and he's yet to come so that is they find a family. so it's basically a man, woman and child and they find their coffins and they're like ancient so they're bringing them to a museum or something and the paper falls off so they'll to life.
UnknownYeah. It it gets really It gets really
LeeUnfinished stories.
UnknownIt gets really quite sort of it it gets sort of farcical because it's like the paper the paper drops off one who starts moving and then it comes off another one but then they stick the other one back on.
UnknownAnd it like you know someone's just not noticing that they're it gets a bit like Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein like the early bits in the wax museum. It's like this guy doesn't realise that he keeps dropping the paper off and activating them and then he puts it back on and then I was very pleased that that was I got very excited in the Ouija episode of what we do in the Shadows because a Chinese hopping vampire Yeah.
UnknownYeah turned up. And yeah but no Mr. Vampire are like they I didn't realise there was four actually. I knew there was I knew there was I knew there was at least three.
Unknownbut yeah I know and I definitely want to I definitely want to get the the release of one.
LeeYeah.
UnknownWhen it's on its way outside yeah. Adam you weren't very
LeeDemon now. Yeah it wasn't intentional. He was scratching his ear.
UnknownOh sorry.
Leebut yeah is it but so I watched the fourth one and I thought right it was fun and I really enjoyed it but I didn't get what was going on so I thought that's all right because I've got the first one as well so I'll go back and I'll watch the first one and then it all makes sense.
LeeAnd it doesn't. So because what confused me is so the Taoist
Leemaster basically goes out into the forest for days on end with a load of vampires who he has who have all got this piece of paper stuck on their head so they have to follow his instructions.
LeeAnd he just hops through the forest with them. And they do this in the fourth one so I thought that doesn't make any sense. I don't understand but that's all right because I'll go back and rewatch the first one and it all makes sense.
LeeAnd the first one is exactly the same. He just at the beginning goes I'm going out with my legion of vampires and out they go. And that's it. You don't see them getting to but yeah the other the other facet that they've got I've never seen before if you hold your breath the vampire can't see you.
LeeSo as long as you hold your breath you're invisible.
UnknownExcellent. And that's what you're saying about the rules. That's a an unusual one. There are there are so many because I think I've said about it before but there's the thing about putting if you steal a vampire's sock put garlic in it and throw it in a river or something like that.
LeeYeah.
Unknownthe other things are so if you get bitten by a vampire you can suck the evil out by putting dry sticky rice in the wound and it sucks the poison out.
LeeOh like if you drop your iPhone in the toilet.
UnknownExactly yeah.
LeeYeah.
UnknownThat's probably how they found out about the iPhone. Somebody died in if you watch the vampire
LeeLike if you were going to extract the evil from an iPhone That would be like in Poltergeist Two when he throws up half a man.
UnknownRight in in the urine where you dropped it in the toilet. I know just the evil that Apple is.
Leeyeah and then so there's the rice thing and they can't walk on sticky rice either. And if
UnknownWho can?
LeeYeah, that's much.
UnknownAnd if you get bitten by a vampire the the poison can only take effect if you stay still because it makes your limbs solid. So as long as you keep dancing for long enough for the rice to take effect Is this all just made up for this comedy?
UnknownBecause I don't see how the dancing could be humorous. No I don't see how the dancing could be humorous.
LeeIf I think this is more Chinese law that we don't know about for the Chinese vampire.
UnknownIt it's definitely it'd definitely be something worth looking into because there is a lot of I know certainly there's a lot of extremely strange stuff in like in Japanese myths as well and Chinese legends and you know they do have they have a similar sort of there's just a I don't know what it is.
UnknownIt's just a it's well I do know what it is. It's an utterly different culture creating a myth and yeah you just get so many sort of strange what well what would seem strange to us but it's probably perfectly natural to have hopping vampires coming around your gaff you know if you're expecting it.
UnknownBut like you say I think I think that's the point as well like you say it's I think it is part of Chinese vampire law in so much as there's no explanation for it within the films.
UnknownBecause they don't need to explain it because they don't Because they don't need to explain it much in the same way as it's like why is he wearing a cape?
UnknownHe's a vampire. Come on. You know.
LeeYeah so it is very much so but yeah I mean it was as I I found it entertaining so they were all good. yes but I've waffled on long enough now so let's get into this evening's main film.
UnknownOne point before you do even though it links very highly I will have to mention that Adam Adam Law did send us the article about a vampire hunting kit that had gone up for auction.
LeeYeah I did see that. Yes.
UnknownYeah, a lovely little
LeeI saw a couple of those.
UnknownYeah I'm going to I'll post it on I'll post it on the on the Instagram so people can see it. This beautiful little box with a pistol and a miniature Bible and weirdly enough a vial of shark's teeth.
Unknownand I am not I'm not too sure about spending three grand on this box because I know for a fact that there is a vending machine in Cambridge that has shark's teeth in it.
UnknownOh. Well because I got some. Oh. Seriously it's the the Cambridge like Natural History Museum or something like that and they just yeah they just had you know like the gumball machines or like little yeah and yeah one of the things they had was shark's teeth so yeah that's all I have to say.
LeeSo so you can put them in your mouth and pretend to be a vampire.
UnknownNo no no it's just so I can go hey I've got some shark's teeth and people go really and then you realise oh yeah we're not eight anymore. So no one's ever come round and been impressed by my shark's teeth.
LeeI was thinking more for the Vampire Hunter. Why is it in the kit?
UnknownYes, I have no idea. It's probably you know maybe it's like the opposite of powdered rhino horn. You know that's that's that's supposed to sort of that's supposed to be an aphrodisiac maybe something like powdered shark's teeth.
UnknownEveryone knows vampires hate it.
LeeOh is that?
UnknownYeah. Not not only that but also sharks famous for their love of garlics so they're probably quite tainted. You know because woe betide you that you don't serve garlic bread with yourself when a shark attacks you.
UnknownOff off Bondi Beach. Eat bread a lot. Well yeah. Keeps the that keeps the vampires and the sharks away.
LeeThere you go.
UnknownYeah.
Leeyes so Chris what did you on your first viewing of this film? What did you make of let the right one in?
UnknownIt's a very I'd say deep film.
Unknownyou know almost the the vampiric side of it didn't necessarily need to be there. And yeah obviously that does add large part to it. so like yeah I definitely enjoyed it.
UnknownI would say
Unknownyou might need to go over the story just to make sure that I fully understood it.
Leeso a strange boy who is is finds it difficult to make friends.
UnknownGet alone that yeah. Yeah. I blame his ear cup.
LeeYeah I do as well. befriend a small quote unquote girl that we'll get into that later because that's a whole mess. who moves in near him. It later transpires that she is a vampire and the man who we think is her father is actually her familiar who goes out murdering people for to bring blood back so that she doesn't get caught.
Leeand he befriends her and she ultimately helps him out with his
UnknownRelease
Leedifficultness.
UnknownDifficult is yeah.
Leeyeah and then like it transpires that he's just as helpful to her.
UnknownYeah so so that's what I thought was happening that she essentially befriends and I imagine it's normally a lonely boy who's potentially getting bullied and they fall in love with her and then they become her familiar.
UnknownAnd that's the cycle.
LeeIt is but it's a very it it is strange because that's the thing like the the relationship that she has with the older man at the beginning is very they they effectively is a kind of paedophilic relationship.
UnknownIt is in the book definitely. But that's but that's how it would then become as the boy grows up.
LeeExactly that's the thing so it isn't so that's where why it's and again that's why I find it so thought provoking is the idea that because she doesn't age and he does they both love at the same age but then he ages beyond her and later then it becomes
UnknownYeah. Yeah. Yeah. And at some point he needs to die and she will eat him. Well all also also because I mean that's the because the I mean not sort of like not sort of skipping ahead or anything else like that but I believe that the intention within the film is is that he she was going to turn him into a vampire after everything like after the end of the film is that they were going to go off and turn her into a vampire.
UnknownIn the book it's much more as you say where it's the sort of the entrapment of a familiar almost or it's like you know it's the and frankly you sort of you see the reason why you wouldn't turn someone because two 12 year olds can't really get much done.
LeeYeah.
UnknownNo she was going to turn him. I didn't get that part at all. No I didn't get that impression.
LeeOh no I think this is this is something that they sort of talked about behind the scenes of the film and everything like when they were sort of discussing about you know it's not I don't think it it's certainly it's not within the film.
UnknownNo it's not
LeeAnd yeah and it and it does make more it does make more sense that you'd let someone grow up because frankly the her familiar who she starts off with you know he's an he's an adult man who can therefore you know rent a room without anyone batting an eyelid or he can you know go and do bits and pieces which you know a 12 year old can't sort of really do.
LeeI mean it's even the bit with the even the bit where she goes into the hospital. And she asks about oh you know she where's my when he when he's been captured and burns his face off.
LeeAnd then she's in hospital and then he's in hospital when she comes in. And the best she can do is to just sort of play innocent then leave and then go and do what she rather than you know someone who could come in and I don't know bringing bringing a sense of authority or something like that.
UnknownYeah.
LeeBecause even though she comes in and says she's his daughter there's no way the police are going to take her
Leeto see him or the hospital you do you know what I mean everyone would be more concerned with well what's happening to you and you know we'll get social services which is like the worst
UnknownYeah.
Leepossible fucking scenario. but yeah so but certainly in the book it's much more that it's the the start of a new cycle kind of thing where she you know she's she's got another familiar not necessarily in her thrall but certainly you know he clearly loves her.
UnknownWill it I mean he didn't really have much going for him. No. And then really it was her that gave him inspiration to start going to gym class and and take on the bullies.
LeeYeah.
UnknownOh just as an aside on that how good is the PE teacher? Was it was it Mr. Mr. Alvy or something like I don't remember his name but Yeah.
Unknownhe is just spot on.
LeeYeah.
UnknownDo you know what I mean you know he's just a spot on spot on teacher. It's when he's reading the newspaper when he's lifted away he's struggling with her
Leebeing pressed and he doesn't try and help him. He just carries on reading and stuff.
UnknownYeah classic teacher. That's why I got into his teaching. I thought it just be reading papers a lot but it turns out not anymore.
LeeYeah well
UnknownBurning out fires. Yeah that's it finding dead bodies in the ice you know. I mean that's because funny enough I know like like you when we were talking about it before we were watching it and Lee you'd asked whether Claire was going to watch it with me.
UnknownAnd I was when you said oh no it's actually you know I'm I wasn't sure you know whether it would be something she'd watch. And it hadn't occurred to me because I was kind of like oh there's nothing in this.
UnknownYeah I forgot violent it can be But Yeah but it's it's much more the facts and the thing that Claire said that was the chilling part is the reality of it.
UnknownIn so much as yes it's a vampire film but literally everything else is plausible. Everything plays out.
LeeAnd horrible.
UnknownYeah. And it's you know it's grim in that sort of sense.
LeeYeah. So that you're saying that I was going to bring that up because it surprised me that Lee likes it because for the whole film and this why I was a bit hesitant in how I said I liked it because I did really like it but it was desolate and very reminiscent of an Aronofsky film.
LeeHowever the end is quite uplifting. It's almost the reverse. You know why he so it's like it's quite bad throughout. He's got nothing going on. She's kind of not got much going on.
LeeIt's bad for all of them. But then yeah obviously she helps him at the end but even that is a bit you know it's it's good for him. He's now got you know a purpose in life and he feels good about it but
UnknownBut it might not be for him actually.
Leefor for his purpose in life is murdering people.
UnknownYeah yeah so exactly so it's not like ultimately it's not fantastic and and obviously the boys that were bullying him you know
LeeNo.
Unknownthey're all horrible really and not all of them. Some of them were being coerced into it. One of them was Oh but he was all right. He was alive at least.
Unknownstill alive. Yeah Sandy the Sandy Tocksfield one. Yeah he was still alive wasn't he? Yeah.
LeeThe one who looks like Sandy Tocksfield was fine.
UnknownOn the end of the pool at the end yeah. Yeah.
LeeBut but he's not you know where's all the others had been ripped to shreds and
UnknownYeah. I'd just like to say good.
LeeWell it's point.
UnknownBecause because I know I know we should be you know we should be nicer about this sort of thing and yes children are murdered but I can't imagine we've we ain't lost you know.
UnknownWe didn't lose a cure for cancer. We didn't lose you know a great humanitarian or anything else like that. Just some little trinkets. They were they were just going to grow up to be pricks.
LeeYeah.
UnknownAnd and the brother is perfect example of that. He's very much older and he's still just a knob. He's not he's not progressed anywhere.
LeeYeah.
UnknownI think
LeeIt's actually some something else that and this goes back to weirdly enough to Nightmare on Elm Street Two Freddy's Revenge. I think that also the fact that you've got two 12 year old well someone who has the body of a 12 year old and a 12 year old played by 12 year olds.
UnknownYeah.
LeeI think that helps rather than the sort of American high school you know 48 year old high school senior. You know it it it's certainly not the Grease effect.
LeeYou know they're actually they do look like kids which sort of makes it again again the you know makes it so much more real. They've done they I mean frankly those all all the kid actors not just like Oscar and Ellie.
LeeBut like all the kids in the class and the bullies and everything else like that they're so good.
UnknownYeah.
LeeThey are really really good actors.
UnknownI don't think there's a single performance in this that lets it down from any even people with much smaller roles. I just thought it it was even down to that was the other thing I said the alternative title for this should have been Vampires versus Winos.
UnknownBecause they're all winos who are
LeeYeah.
UnknownVersus winos with cats.
LeeYeah.
UnknownYeah.
LeeLike even them they're so realistic. They're so believable. They're just they're just fantastic performances for
UnknownBut but that additional bit with the the woman who gets turned but then just wants to die. You know like it it's all a tragedy really.
LeeOh there's there's no basically I mean from what I can't remember. I tried to find the bloody article and I couldn't for the life of me. I bet I know where it is.
LeeMy DVD copy of this has an exclusive little White Lies magazine in it which is just all about the thing. Maybe I should have looked in there rather than searching online but I know that because the film's set in '82 and apparently it was like proper that was Sweden had like a a serious unemployment problem.
LeeAnd so the the group of like you say like the group of winos. And even the dad where like you know the dodgy yeah with the dodgy like Frankenstein's reimagining of Kevin Eldon turns up.
UnknownI'd always taken that that his father had left his mother and that was a game. No, I took it there possibly a game Yeah, it did look like that.
UnknownSo his mate comes over and encourages him to drink which obviously
LeeYeah, which upsets us And weirdly enough this is the first first time watching this as a dad and for the first time I've been like I was being a judgmental prick.
LeeIn that I was like oh fuck you mate off you look at his face the poor little cunt you know because you can see because you can see that like Oscar's like having he's just spending time with his dad.
LeeAnd then like say Frankenstein's Eldon turns up and suddenly yeah suddenly it's like oh no look we've got guests we've got guests dig out the vodka you know and yeah
UnknownAnd drink it in massive shots they just straight just yeah
LeeBut I think so yeah I mean that's the thing is there's no one in this in a good place.
UnknownNo, no I agree with you there Chris I think it has got an almost Aranofsky type everything is grim everybody's life is shit. And the only good thing is the vampire that kills people ruthlessly as as as a requirement to survive.
UnknownYeah, that's the irony perhaps.
LeeI mean I have to I have to admire the familiars like going out kit. Yeah, you know funnel, bottle, gas mask you know
LeeI I love that that it's so sort of like homemade as well where it's like this sort of briefcase with the false front and everything but it's it's basically it does have the feeling of you did say to your dad can you build a murder kit and like your middle-aged dad did that's what it feels like it's like it's someone someone who's got a shed and all the and the tools are all outlined on the wall.
LeeIt's got that sort of feeling to it and he's just built a very nice sort of yeah quick quick exsanguination kit which
Leehe was coming to the end of his usefulness wasn't he really?
UnknownAgain in the book it doesn't sound like he's been particularly useful up to this point sound like they've been together as you said like maybe for the boy very much was picked up as an older man and it sort of says you know he's had two failures already and then this is his sort of last chance to kind of prove himself and obviously it fails as well and he ends up with the acid and yeah Yeah.
UnknownSo I think it's probably time to address the elephant in the room really which is the strange sexuality of of Ellie. And so Ellie is very much a a girl or appears to be.
UnknownIn the movie there's a very quick scene where we see she says I'm not a girl in an early and you take that to being because she's Yeah, she's actually yeah yeah But you quick shot when Oscar looks in at her getting changed where she got massive scar.
UnknownAnd if I've got it right from what I vaguely remember from people talking about it when it was released so she was a boy cut her jungle
LeeNo, no it's in I believe it's in the book it's it's well it's definitely in the book they have a flashback that basically Ellie as a young boy was sort of taken to like your classic sort of sexual sadist's castle.
LeeAnd basically
Leecastrated and then turned to remain as a child for this lord.
UnknownOkay.
LeeSo and it's like it's it's very sort of like lot say I mean Jennifer thank you you bought me the book many Christmases ago I think it was like that year or whatever but because you'd read it yourself and but yeah and so in the book there is a long flashback where they sort of explain that but essentially yeah Ellie has Ellie has been was a boy who had who was castrated essentially had all her bits cut off.
LeeAnd but she because that's the weird thing she doesn't although although she ostensibly appears as a girl she denies it to what she not denies it but she says to Oscar I'm not a girl a couple of times so it's not even it's weird that it's not necessarily an identification.
LeeAnd it's actually quite sweet where Oscar's like well doesn't matter Yeah. Yeah. He just wants a mate you know he just wants a friend or you know which is very sweet.
UnknownAnd that's the thing and you do feel for him at times but he's such a horrible weird little fucker. What when he's talking to a tree and stabbing it.
UnknownBut that's that's his way of trying to you know stand up to the bullies. Anyway back to the whole she he thing what was interestingly because I kind of skim read back through the book over the last couple of days.
UnknownSo yeah the pronoun she is used throughout until page 425 suddenly she's addressed as he. I I kind of looked back on the lot you know pages I was like have I missed something?
UnknownAnd just suddenly in that last sort of part yeah it's really weird I can't work out I mean I probably need to read it properly again but literally kind of right at the end
LeeThey sort of they sort of switch over
UnknownIsn't that isn't that after the reveal then? No, not particularly. It's not after the bit where where he's after the bit obviously where she said I'm not a girl but it's not sort of directly after because it's literally the last sort of that little chunk of the book there.
LeeYeah.
UnknownSee and that's what I love about this is there's so much for a film that's so short there is so much depth in this in this movie. And as you say and the depth of the characters as well so like Oscar you follow Oscar and you don't dislike him but he's weird and he's friends with him at school definitely not because he is the kind of kid who would one day stab someone for no reason.
UnknownBut that's probably because he's got no friends.
LeeYeah, that's weird
UnknownYeah. It's an odd thing isn't it and you just like why are you doing that but it so perfectly embodies that loner weirdo you know and you don't like you don't hate him but you feel a bit repulsed by him you know No.
UnknownThey I one of the notes I've got here is too much snot with three He's always got snot on his face always.
LeeIt is it is a cold country though I do wonder.
UnknownBut the others didn't have that.
UnknownAnd again this kid actor is absolutely perfect. I just and the thing is you only need one week linking a film like this and it spoils it and it drags you out of it.
UnknownAnd and to have so many kid actors and as you said Adam from alter to yeah just bring such a fantastic performance to this is yeah nothing short of brilliant.
LeeI I think everyone weirdly enough and also now now we're sort of discussing it it's interesting how much of it is
Leebackstory that you that you aren't spoon-fed. You know you you it basically it's an intelligent film that treats you with the intelligence to be like all right so I that so he's his mom and dad have split up and you know it's but you don't need to create like you know it doesn't needs exposition on
UnknownYeah.
LeeYeah.
Unknowntell you all this stuff I think that's quite refreshing because you do watch it and maybe that why it's more believable because you don't normally have someone in real life turning to the camera Explaining everything this so that's that's why you you buy into the characters so much.
UnknownAre you drinking the game Dave? You know that's why mom left you don't so just
LeeExactly. We've got but we've got a lovely level of ambivalence there I mean the the director went on to do Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which I fucking loved but I know it wasn't necessarily to everyone's taste.
LeeBut it's but again I think it was suited weirdly enough I think it was suited because it was that same thing of everything in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is kind of washed out and used.
LeeEverything is very sort of like it's very much fag end of the 60s sort of brown wallpaper sort of feel to it and I think yeah he brought that you know I think that's the that you can definitely see as a through line from this.
LeeFunnily enough I hadn't actually remembered until I was it was a bit earlier actually not earlier today. the there's the film that I 've spoken about on here before Boulder which is the film about the troll who works for customs.
LeeThat
UnknownThat sounded interesting.
LeeWell that is based on a short story by the author of Let the Right One In. So it's one of yeah one of his John Ajvide Lindqvist which I probably said really insultingly so I do I do apologize John.
Leeyeah and but that seems to be because he he did another book which was about
Leewhich was like a a zombie story but again like I say Boulder obviously is the one about the troll working for the customs. And it's it weird thinking about it now that makes perfect sense although it's a different director for Boulder story-wise it has it feels in that same sort of way where it's basically right right here's the real world here's this supernatural or folkloric element that abuts into it.
LeeBut it's still everything feels real.
UnknownYeah.
LeeAnd there's no basically it's the thing of no the world is still the same world that it is it just these things are in it without necessarily like oh well that means you've got to rethink the entire way that the world works you know but it's it's not one of those films where it's like oh well you know it's set in an alternate 1938 vampires have been recognized since 1838 and yeah you know so Count Dracula was Prime Minister for six years and co-consort to Queen Victoria who herself is now undead so yeah it's so I do if you like this I do recommend Boulder again because I think there is there's a lot similar funnily enough it's the same thing of it being you know kind of a fucked up love story essentially.
Leealthough Let the Right One In is is a much sweeter story.
UnknownPerhaps depending on what you read into it.
LeeOh that's true I I think it I think the central relationship between Oscar and Ellie is pretty pure.
UnknownYeah. Oh yeah yeah yeah
LeeLike it as it's how how that may go on where he becomes her familiar then you start getting into Gilmerro in what we do in the Shadows territory where it's like we did promise me 11 years ago you're going to turn did I?
LeeI don't think I did but so yeah how much how sort of used he may be at that point I don't know. so law-wise what what do we have in this we obviously have sunlight.
UnknownWell I've got a Yeah. Yes, sunlight burns ages without blood and the interesting thing there did anyone else work out the extra actress? Because I totally forgot about it till Ellie pointed it out.
UnknownYeah, so the so the scenes in this there is a couple of flash scenes where it's it's a much older well not older but yeah a woman in her probably 30s who looks a lot like the younger actress and they just flick it so you just see her for three or four frames and then they cut it back
LeeYes.
UnknownYeah she'll just look at some point and it's older face yeah. You don't realize it it just yeah really just look I just thought that was makeup but Yeah.
UnknownNo, well I I say I did originally when we saw it the first but yeah rewatching it again this time in HD yeah you can see it's an old and I went and even checked it on IMDb yeah it is it's an older actress they've got it's almost identical to her they've made her look almost identical.
LeeAnd I'm sure I'm sure that at certain points I don't know it might just be the actress but I 'm sure at certain points they've like enhanced like made her eyes big
UnknownHer eyes look big don't they? Yeah.
LeeBecause there are certain points where they look really like unnaturally huge.
UnknownBut subtle enough that you're not quite sure which is clever
LeeYeah.
UnknownYeah.
LeeYeah. And actually actually she's dubbed as well. they got they got an actress in because they wanted to have a more androgynous voice.
UnknownOh okay.
LeeSo but yeah so Ellie Ellie's actually dubbed for for the film but yeah sorry yes.
UnknownOther rules yeah so the one about asking to come in well I particularly liked about that was she makes him like or or he makes her prove it not realizing and she sort of like okay fine you know I'm going to show you what happens here and just actually pause with blood which is really
LeeYeah.
UnknownIt's just really horrible you know because normally she's like oh I can't come in oh I'll just stand here and even makes that comment doesn't he oh there's like
LeeYeah, is there barrier
UnknownYeah yeah yeah She's like right okay then Yeah. Yeah.
LeeAnd I I have to say I much prefer that to sort of like the Marcel Marcel like you know guy trapped in a box acting from and I can't and then she just walks in and then just begins to sort of like disintegrate in front of him.
UnknownBecause I've not seen that before And it's like
LeeNo, I've never seen that before and I think it's a really good
UnknownNo. Yeah.
LeeWhat it makes more sense that you would be you know rather than some invisible force field it kind of makes more sense that it's like no you actually have a physiological consequence to this
UnknownBlind to fix somehow isn't it
LeeYeah.
UnknownYeah. And she's sick if she eats human food so that's another
LeeYeah.
UnknownThat is in some I've seen Oh yeah but again I do like the fact that in a kind of attempt to try and keep it all the time Oh I know Yeah.
UnknownIt's like all right then she's just yeah I guess that shows that it it's not just her kind of taking his affection like she is trying to Yeah. you know Yeah.
Unknowngive back to him as well isn't she which is kind of
LeeYeah.
Unknownshe flies or at least sort of jumps fly which again is clever because straight away flying looks really fake and everything so you see her kind of jumping up the hospital So so that's why so she reminded me of a cat the way that they made her look and she seemed to have sort of a purring noise which I know was her being hungry but it seemed like they'd made it more of a purr than
LeeYeah, it's like a well it's like an animal noise isn't it?
UnknownYeah and so I mean obviously I wasn't sure if there was more significance to that or it was just me seeing it because they had the whole you know tons of cats in it as well.
LeeI I have to say not having seen this film for quite a while those CGI pissed off cats are crap.
UnknownI know that was the worst bit everything else you know there's no it's just it's perfect but I did make a note here because they can't do an uncanny or an uncanny anymore they can't throw cats at people and No.
UnknownWell that that would have been a lot of cats as well. Yeah, but you know in the old days that worked really well didn't it? It is but this was one of my big arguments when we discussed it's going to come up at some point so you might dive in now the remake let me in.
UnknownNo, the only thing is the title makes more sense because I didn't know why there was a wrong one you'd let in.
LeeYeah.
LeeLet the right one in is a Smith's reference I believe.
UnknownOh really? No.
LeeYeah, I'm sure it's I'm sure I read somewhere that it is like it's from a Morrissey song or a Smith's song. so but I mean you can't hold that against it can you?
LeeSo but yeah so in the remake they do away with that whole cat scene which makes perfect sense because
UnknownYeah yeah
Leeit didn't seem so necessary.
UnknownBut the problem is they took that away which makes sense but then what they did put in which they CGI'd for no reason whatsoever is the scene in the underpass when she attacks the one of that group.
Unknownyeah it is from a Just slipping up yeah Morrissey song Let the right one slip in is the
LeeNo.
UnknownAnd it is apparently about yeah vampires not being able to come in unless they're invited. yeah so for no apparent reason the scene in which the the guy's trying to help her in the subway and he leans over and he kind of climbs up.
Unknownyeah they CGI'd that so that she springs up in the air and bounces off the walls and that looks just as shit as the cat. But but that didn't have to be in there for any reason whatsoever and I was like well you took that scene out because no matter what Which was fine the way they'd done it.
UnknownFantastic
UnknownI think something that doesn't need to be CGI'd that's what angers me that scene looks amazing got for nothing with just a girl jumping at a bloke like you don't you don't have to have her flying around like Yoda.
UnknownMaybe I assume it's American actress maybe you know that it's in their clause oh I don't jump on people. it is that can't be the case because it is Chloe Grace Moretz who we've all seen in Kick-Ass.
UnknownOh she jumped oh okay Yeah. Yeah. So she was trained for that you know. I'm sure she hadn't forgotten this is only a couple of years like that's one of the other things I did like about the remake is I don't think I'd seen her in anything after Kick-Ass in which she was amazing.
UnknownAnd I I remember thinking you know when you see a kid actor who really says anything like I really hope that their career they get an opportunity. yeah so when this came out and then literally the next year the remake was was in production.
UnknownAnd yeah the fact that she got the lead role I thought was was was brilliant and has obviously done a lot for her career.
LeeShe's she's she's done quite a lot actually especially recently she's been just cropping up in loads of stuff.
UnknownShe had again I I think for someone her age she's she's a fantastic actress and it's great that she hasn't done the totally going off the rails thing that a lot of
LeeYeah.
UnknownAdam how would you know?
LeeMind you it's mind you it's this is there's a weird there's a weird sort of pre-history with sort of talented like young actresses play like either playing vampires or moving on to play vampires.
LeeBecause obviously you've got oh from Interview with the Vampire why why can I not think of her name?
UnknownNo, Kirsten Dunst, Brad Pitt yeah yeah
LeeSo obviously
UnknownSo I thought you know her role in that is is enough to say it's a good film.
LeeShe's brilliant in that that's the best probably the best thing she's done.
UnknownYeah yeah Yeah.
LeeAnd then you and then you've got Anna Paquin who wins an Oscar at 11 who ends up being in True Blood.
UnknownYeah.
LeeSo there's obviously you know there's there's obviously a lot of vampires and things there will you know we can ignore Natalie Portman I don't think she's done a vampire film but other than that yeah.
LeeIt's sort of the you either end up playing a vamp either end up playing a vampire or you get noticed playing a vampire seems to be the
Unknownyeah just to cut back one of the other things I love I've just looking through my notes and I just thought I'd mention it now as a good time.
UnknownI mentioned it briefly earlier the pool scene. I've forgotten just how little you see of that attack. yeah no it's that was done really well. Yeah, it's all shot from underwater.
UnknownYeah, that's great I do. And it happens and then the camera comes up and it's it's it's all a cat and it's you see that kid's Yeah yeah feet dropping it all on and they shoot out the ball.
LeeYeah yeah Kicking along like that funniest bit in the whole film.
UnknownYeah.
LeeJust because you just think yeah that's it you wanker. Because because you can't you can't help but cheer when he twats him with that rod.
UnknownWell yeah yeah And again it's that it's it's not like a big Hollywood they don't put noise on it or anything
LeeNo.
UnknownIt's just the right impact yeah
LeeYeah.
UnknownAnd it takes him a little while and then he then he sort of grabs A little while Yeah yeah It's that pause it just feels Real completely real it's amazing.
UnknownYeah. I think
LeeAnd also also you think it's cold. It's just going to sting just that wee bit more isn't it?
UnknownTop of your ears off in the freezing cold and whacks on the big trumpet Do you use that over there though? But yeah back to the pool scene so it reminded me of when we watched it as the stage show.
UnknownOh yeah And that was very stark there was literally like trees and that was pretty much the main stage with those sort of trees on it. So the yeah so the the stage itself all the way through was a forest with a bed in it and everything took place Somehow in the forest or on the bed but it was snowing the whole time as well.
Unknowna bit but do the pool now have I imagined this have I muddled it up Rocky Horror it was almost like a tank and you could yeah so obviously there's no water I don't think Yeah.
UnknownIt's like No, there was there was full of water but it was about a meter square with a ladder kit and they basically wheeled it out onto the stage and it was in a corner of the stage for the whole of the second half.
LeeYeah.
UnknownAnd then at that point your attention obviously switched to it because the lights went when they came back up he was in it sort of paddling in the water.
UnknownYeah and then the others all came and the stage show was It was very cleverly done yeah
LeeI forgot you guys saw it as I saw the stage adaptation.
UnknownYeah. We did with Sharon previous guest on the show hi Sharon.
LeeHello.
Unknownyeah, the stage show was was fantastic, and and that was what I loved most of all about it was the fact that it all took place. They they'd created such a such a a way of laying the set out that everything just felt right.
UnknownIt's either It sort of flowed together but with minimum kind of movement and, you know, fanfare and everything else. And I guess that's what the film is like, isn't it?
UnknownIt's very quite low key. You know, it just kind of poodles along, but it really works. So I guess that why it works so well as a stage show really.
LeeYeah.
LeeYeah.
UnknownIt's a shame it hasn't sort of come back or
Unknownyou know. Yeah, 2014 we saw that in so it's years ago. if it were to return, I would definitely
LeeRight.
LeeYeah, I'd watch that.
UnknownEven without seeing the film, I think like it was it worked well as a stage show. So it yeah. Oh, without it, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Definitely worth seeing, yeah.
Unknownbut yeah. So Adam, you've seen the remake. Is that right?
LeeI have seen I've known half the remake, I think. I just I I didn't see it from the start. I came in in the middle and then quit before the end.
UnknownI was going to say first half, second half, but the middle. So yeah.
LeeThe mid the middle segment. So yeah.
UnknownAnd what did you
LeeAnd I'm and I was just sitting there going there's no beginning or or end to this.
LeeI don't know. I was just I to be honest, I don't remember it that well. I mean, because they do change they do change sort of change it a fair bit as I remember.
LeeIt's not just it's not just a a shot by shot,
UnknownNo.
Leeyou know, let's translate it into English for people who want English subtitles. You know, they did actually seem to have worked at it. Was it is it in in my head for some reason?
LeeWas it a Hammer film?
UnknownI'm not sure. Let me look that up. It might have been.
LeeBecause I think it's part of like the sort of Hammer revival.
UnknownThinking correctly. I think it might have been one of the first.
LeeYeah, because it was around the time because they did what was it beyond the rave or beyond the which was like the vampire rave movie, and then they did the one about a tree.
LeeGod, this just sounds like my dreams now.
UnknownWake wood.
LeeWake wood, that's it. Yeah. One about a tree.
UnknownThat Hammer tree or just a tree?
LeeJust tree.
UnknownI can't yeah, it is. Yeah, Hammer Films. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was one of the production companies.
LeeSo I was kind of, you know, on that level I was I was prepared to go with it, but I just I think it was just so compared to the original what I saw of it, I just did not think was particularly sort of memorable.
UnknownYeah, it just wasn't needed really, was it?
LeeYeah.
UnknownIt wasn't as good, so it was fine. And if you'd only watched that version, you'd be like, yeah, yeah, it's all right. It's entertaining. But I think when you compare it with the original is when you see that stark sort of contrast of now this film was kind of amazing and that version was all right.
UnknownI I totally agree, but I do and I'm I I've said before obviously I've been very anti remake generally, but what I do think is a low budget independent foreign language horror movie is not going to reach many people.
UnknownWhereas the fact that it's it said right this is amazing, 90% of people won't give a shit. So what we can do is we're going to remake it and give other people the opportunity to enjoy it.
UnknownBut maybe then people go back and watch the original because they've seen the Yeah, and I I think I think that I think let me in although it wasn't for us, I think as a gateway to a lot of people it would have been Yeah.
LeeI I think what I saw of it it just came across as certainly it wouldn't be 12 years down the line we're doing this show. Jennifer says I want to do let right one in.
LeeIt was like fucking yes. You know, I I don't think it would be the same with let me in.
UnknownNo, no. I and I do agree, but again as you said Adam as well, I felt that they didn't just go that's brilliant. Let's remake it in American. Like they did change the story up enough.
Unknownit's again I I was hoping to rewatch it but didn't. But
LeeI think as as I recall as well, I think it's also that classic case of ironing out the what could be what would now be called problematic or not I don't think it is, but but the stuff in there that would be like well you can't have a mainstream audience where there's, you know, you know, when there's a pdo with acid on his face and there's you do you know what I mean?
LeeIt's sort of they they sort of do
UnknownAgain because the the familiar character although I don't remember it being a factor, I've got it up here in front of me on IMDb. So Richard Jenkins who we obviously love the crap out of plays the familiar, and he's credited as the father.
UnknownYeah. So I think they made him the father of Abby, which is why he's got that protective
Leeyeah.
Unknownbut without having the whole mixed feelings of yeah.
LeeYeah.
UnknownAnd then having to allow an American audience to think well hang on a minute he clearly has got a loving and lustful relationship with her, but if they both had it the same relationship at eight years old and now he's ace and she hasn't is that wrong or you know keeping it nice and simple with her dad.
UnknownThere you go. Done. Yes. And it takes that element out of it I think.
LeeYeah.
UnknownAnd it felt like those type of tweaks as well. It felt like things as you say Adam just it is dumbing it down unfortunately, but
LeeI don't even necessarily think of it as dumbing it down, but it's just it's sugaring it a bit.
UnknownSmoothing the edges off.
LeeYou you know taking it, you know, so it's not quite so I suppose not quite so grim, but
UnknownNot quite so enough
LeeI like grim.
UnknownI like grim.
LeeYeah.
Unknownof waking which is what I like about it. It's interesting in it. Yeah.
LeeYeah.
UnknownI couldn't agree more. It puts another element on vampires. It's not just all they're pretty and sparkly, you know. Yeah.
LeeThat I got to say, and it might upset you Leon Adam, but that does remind me of Anne Rice, the way that she took vampires, that you know over a longer period of time what happens between them and humans and you know it it gets more complex if you think you live for thousands of years.
UnknownOh, yeah.
UnknownWell, that's the thing is I think the interview with the vampire
LeeSo you don't know. I mean they don't
Unknownstill still stands like the book. I still stands. Yeah.
LeeI just I think I I read it and I was like you know maybe because I was I think I was because I was like the film's pretty good, so the book will probably be better.
LeeAnd then it was and then I read it and I was like actually I'll probably watch the film again rather than read the book again. And and then reading the subsequent ones and I was like oh no I think that was a because I think the actual book Interview with the Vampire gets it spot on in terms of like like you say that whole living of you know like the the lifespan compared to other people like to to ordinary humans.
LeePlus also the thing of the frustration of a child like being in a child's body, but you are older than most people that you encounter. And actually I mean that's something that's even even that's in Near Dark
UnknownYeah. Yeah.
Leelike Homer the boy. At certain points there's the implication that he's actually the oldest one there.
UnknownYeah. Yeah.
UnknownYeah.
LeeBut again because he's trapped in the body of a boy's body, he relies on he's reliant on the others
Unknownin the boy's body. Yeah.
Leeto to survive because
UnknownBecause the world's not geared up for
LeeYeah, because he they won't you know he can't go around like hot wiring vans and so on and so
UnknownYeah, this definitely did have that like Ellie totally bosses her familiar around and Sharon there's a scene where she's shouting at him for letting her down and stuff. Yeah, and you do get the impression that she's the one who's holding all the cards in that relationship instead of
LeeWell, it's even just the simple bit where she wants to do the Morse code with him. She just goes over move.
UnknownYeah.
LeeJust move.
UnknownIt gives you an idea, doesn't it? Their relationship at that point you're like oh hang on a minute. Yeah.
LeeAnd it's
LeeYeah.
UnknownCuz he's just sitting he's sitting like on the floor reading a magazine and then it's she just comes over and move. And he gets up. He's pissed off, but he gets up and fucks off.
UnknownAnd again there's the scene where he says you know I I'd rather you didn't go out and see that boy again tonight. Yeah, and she just goes straight out and sees him anyway.
UnknownShe's like Don't see him. Yeah.
UnknownYeah. Yeah. I'll fix his Rubik's cube. I'm going out there. First time I've heard it called that.
UnknownYeah, so all in all this it should address the way we saw this as well. So when it came out originally, it did all of the the big movie circuits and stuff.
UnknownAnd I was I I was a massive podcast fanatic at the time. So I'd heard it on two or three different podcasts, people in the States saying look I've been to a convention.
UnknownI've seen this film. You've got to see it at all costs. but I knew that it wasn't going to get a a a a large release over here. So I think a small amount of cinemas did like a one night showing, just a one off on release date.
UnknownSo I think independent stuff independent cinemas like the Prince Charles and stuff would have done maybe a run of it. but oddly enough Stir Century picked it up and one off showing on release date.
UnknownSo our local cinema showed it just once but Yeah, we all went. Yeah, and we were there waiting. And I still remember the excitement. Oh, that's such a as we say such a a low key subdued movie.
UnknownI remember us coming out like we just watched an action movie. We were all massively excited and like over each other in the car. But that's different, so it kind of makes you go oh my god someone's on a vampire film that isn't just like all the other vampire films.
LeeYeah. Yeah. I think having that that swimming pool scene added a bit
UnknownSo I think it was exciting not
UnknownYeah, bit of excitement or
LeeThat yeah.
UnknownTo to me that's the part where it's like the witch.
Leeyeah. Yeah, absolutely.
UnknownCuriously enough the curiously enough that's the feel good scene
LeeYeah.
Unknownwhere it's like you think you think Ellie's gone. he's he's in shit with his mom. he's disappointed with his dad. And then he's at the swimming pool. He thinks he's got a mate but he hasn't because they're fixing him up.
UnknownAnd then that prick turns up with a flick knife. And all I can hope is that we don't see from what we don't see because it is focusing on the pool is the bit where Ellie takes that knife and shoves it right up his ass hole.
UnknownYeah. Yeah.
UnknownThat's not Adam. He made that up. But Yeah. It's in it's head canon. Head canon. But yeah, and I think that's probably what helps is it does have that sort of slightly uplifted yeah, that's it.
UnknownOh, fucking yeah. He's gone mad killer on page across the countryside. You silly sweet kids. Yeah. Yeah, I was quite surprised. We discussed earlier you know I was said to Adam are you going to show this film to Claire?
Unknownand then she messaged me today about something else. So I just sort of said to her have have you watched let the right one in yet? She was like yes.
UnknownAnd I don't know what you are going to think about it, but I thought it was very sweet. And I was like yes, it totally is. But it kind of isn't.
UnknownIt's kind of a movie, but it has got such a sweet ending.
LeeThread running through.
UnknownYeah.
LeeIt's sweet for freaks.
UnknownYes. There you go. But yeah, so
LeeWhich is also what it says on the bumper sticker on my car. Honk if you're horny. Sweet for freaks. And what's the other one? Ask gas or pass? I don't know.
UnknownIf if we stop now you can cut that bit off.
UnknownRight, so yes, we will stop it here before we gush anymore over this film. yeah, anyone who hasn't I know we've kind of spoiled it to a degree. But if you haven't seen this film, honestly it is an absolute treasure.
LeeI think it's an experience even if you know where it's going. I mean we went into it knowing oh it's the story of a little of a little girl vampire who befriends a human boy.
LeeThat doesn't tell the full story.
UnknownNo, but that's that's what I mean. So that's that that is yeah.
LeeTells it but yeah.
UnknownAnd They cram so much into this time. Like there are so many as you say sideline stories with the relationship between the pair. And I know we can't call them the wino's, but they're they're the they're the people that hang out The average people.
LeeWell, yeah. Yeah.
UnknownWhen lockdown everyone were allowed out.
