Lee notes Spielberg was quoted as saying Hooper is not a take-charge sort of guy, and that people say Spielberg directed it with Hooper as more of a technician. Adam adds that Hooper and Spielberg both say the film is Hooper's, although it clearly feels Spielberg. Adam also says Hooper was told Ed Gein stories as a kid, which fed into Chainsaw.

In their own words

  • Adam Yeah. That's the thing it is it's actually I mean he's a Toby Hooper's a really good fucking director.

    Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  • Adam Yeah. And the majority of the feels is definitely Spielberg. And then Hooper comes in. And it blows. Face melts.

    Ep 130 Poltergeist
  • Lee And also Spielberg was quoted at one point. With the rather telling phrase that Toby Hooper's not a take-charge sort of guy. So I think I think Hooper might have been. Like. Yeah.

    Ep 130 Poltergeist
  • Lee But I know the what was it the last yeah, they basically some Spielberg said, where is it? people seem to say that Spielberg directed it. And Toby Hooper was more of a technician. Basically. He was the guy saying, put the camera there, point at that one there, while Stephen Spielberg was like, right, and your motivation is.

    Ep 130 Poltergeist
  • Adam And Basically Hooper and Spielberg do say that the film's Hooper's, although clearly it feels really fucking Spielberg. Even like Jerry Goldsmith's score sounds like Jerry Goldsmith.

    Ep 130 Poltergeist
  • Adam You know, this is all this is all things that Ed Gein did. So there it's very it's kind of Toby Hooper was told the stories as a kid of Ed Gein. And kind of his extrapolation of that sort of thing.
