About
A long time ago on a Podcast in Essex... It’s 1980 (and so 80s it hurts) - Pac Man and the Rubik’s Cube both launch; CNN starts broadcasting; and John Lennon is shot dead. Our Star Wars watch-through reaches probably its zenith with “The Empire Strikes Back” So get ready to watch Luke whacking his Wampa in the snow (dirty boy); realise that Yoda’s probably been on his own too long; witness Mr Bronson get all choked up; and come to the shocking conclusion that Ian McDiarmid is probably better than a redubbed woman in a hood with a set of chimp’s eyes.

Lee Good evening, everyone, and welcome to the Mos Eisley Happy Hour.
Unknown Yay! Hey!
Adam Oh, thank you, thank you, cheers.
Adam My name is, my name is Adam, and I am joined by a fine team.
Adam We have Lee. Hello.
Adam We have Chris. Hello.
Adam And we have Wesley.
Unknown Howdy.
Adam And there we are. The people are here.
Adam We know what we're here for. It's very exciting, isn't it?
Adam Because we have, we've, I think, yeah, it is the very middle of the saga. I know we've done other films, but yeah, it's the very middle of the saga.
Adam We're doing Empire Strikes Back, even though you'll know that because you'll have seen the show notes and gone, "Oh, Empire Strikes Back. I'll have a listen to that," because that's a good one.
Adam So you know we're doing that. So yeah, there's not too too many ways of means about that.
Adam Uh,
Chris I thought I might have blown my my excited fuse circuits last time, but it's Empire Strikes Back.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And considering, considering considering that last time, A New Hope, actually got 41 out of 40.
Adam You know,
Adam crispy bodies as it was. Um,
Adam yeah, I I suspect that we might be spinal tapping this one a bit as well, but we'll see.
Adam And uh, yes.
Adam So, um, and Chris, have you been born at this point?
Chris Yes, yeah. I I I was born, yeah, 1980.
Chris In fact, um, I think this was actually released, was it my birthday?
Chris I think it was like May the 17th or something.
Chris It was released.
Adam Yes, 17th of May in the US, and then the 20th in the UK.
Chris Mm.
Chris So that's that was when I was born.
Adam No.
Adam Yeah, well, there we go. So we now are in Star Wars that we are all alive for.
Adam So, you know.
Adam And I have to say, so I did my, I did my little, um, I did my little bit of twatty research.
Adam Can I just say that 1980 is so fucking 1980, it's unbelievable.
Lee No!
Adam Seriously,
Adam it's like, right, so, cut to the chase, right?
Adam The Rubik's Cube is launched at the British Toy and Hobby Fair.
Lee Oh.
Adam The arcade game Pac-Man is released in Japan.
Adam The Prime Minister is Thatcher.
Adam The US president is Jimmy Carter, but he loses the election to Ronald Reagan, who takes over the next year.
Adam Um, the Iranian embassy in London is stormed, um, is stormed by terrorists, and then a six-day siege ensues that is broken broken finally by the SAS going in and killing all the terrorists.
Adam CNN starts.
Adam And John Lennon is shot dead.
Lee Wow.
Adam And you can't help but feel that that is the most 80s thing about it, because it's like Mark Chapman turns up as the 80s to finally kill the 60s.
Adam And it's like, no, we're about guns, money, and murder now.
Adam Fuck off.
Adam Fuck off, it.
Adam P.
Adam And yeah, so.
Adam Um,
Adam yeah, and I mean UK number ones were there's Pink Floyd, The Pretenders.
Adam Blondie had three.
Chris I love it.
Adam Atomic, Call Me, and The Tide Is High, The Jam, Dexys Midnight Runners.
Lee Yes!
Adam Um, Suicide Is Painless, the theme from Mash.
Adam The Winner Takes It All and Super Trouper by Abba.
Adam Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie.
Adam And there's No One Quite Like Grandma by the St. Winifred's School Choir.
Lee Oh!
Adam So, yeah, some lovely stuff there.
Adam Um,
Adam uh, we and um,
Adam I'll go to TV first because again,
Adam stuff that started on TV this year.
Adam The Hammer House of Horror, admittedly, it's one series.
Adam But we're mentioning it because it's a fucking Hammer House of Horror.
Adam They're brilliant.
Adam So,
Adam also,
Adam The Adventure Game.
Adam Hi-de-Hi.
Lee No.
Adam Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World, Metal Mickey, Family Fortunes, Play Your Cards Right.
Adam Is this not your Saturday night as a child?
Adam Russ Abbot's Madhouse.
Adam Juliet Bravo, The Gentle Touch, Button Moon, King Rollo, Cockleshell Bay, The Munch Punch, The Munch Bunch.
Adam Um, Training Dogs the Woodhouse Way with Barbara Woodhouse.
Adam Yes, Minister, Watchdog, Take the High Road, Knots Landing, and Children in Need, all started in 1980.
Lee Wow.
Adam Um, and Citizen Smith finished, even though that started when Star Wars, a New Hope came out.
Lee Wow.
Adam Yes.
Adam And again, it's her usual mixed bag, and it's very interesting because last time, obviously, when we were talking about with the films,
Adam there was so it was all from the previous big season blockbuster, which had been Jaws because it was so fucking massive.
Adam And all the films there you had quite a few like Jaws rip-offs and other Peter Benchley stuff and things like that.
Adam Uh, but yeah, so film-wise, now you get the influence of Star Wars, because there's quite a few in here.
Adam So, you've got
Adam uh, American Gigolo, The Fog, Cruising, Saturn 3, The Ninth Configuration, Permanent Vacation, Forbidden Zone, The Changeling, The Monster Club.
Lee Oh.
Adam Uh, Bad Timing, Stalker, The Watcher in the Woods, Death Watch, Where the Buffalo Roam, uh, The Movie of Rising Damp, Friday the 13th, Out of the Blue.
Adam Um, the animated Return of the King, Fame, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, Humanoids From the Deep, The Shining, The Blues Brothers.
Adam Herbie Goes Bananas.
Adam Airplane, Alligator, Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, Prom Night, Caddy Shack, Dressed to Kill, Smokey and the Bandit Two, McVicar.
Adam Georgia Mildred, Battle Beyond the Stars, The Exterminator, Sir Henry at Rawlinson End.
Lee Yes.
Adam Uh, Terror Train, The Elephant Man, Private Benjamin, Fade to Black, Motel Hell, The Awakening, The Long Good Friday.
Adam Christmas Evil, Shogun Assassin, Raging Bull, The Falls.
Adam Flash Gordon, Popeye, Stir Crazy, Any Which Way You Can, 9 to 5.
Adam Hawk the Slayer!
Lee Bravo.
Adam And Altered States.
Lee Oh.
Adam So, yeah, basically, it's like, there's everyone's like, oh, that's that's sci-fi's the thing.
Adam That is now.
Adam So,
Adam you've got, I mean, like, you've got Battle Beyond the Stars, Corman's version of Star Wars in there.
Chris Nice.
Chris I love that film.
Adam It is a fucking great film, it has to be said.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Still haven't seen it, I shall write it down now.
Chris Yeah, it's so good.
Adam Oh.
Adam If you've not seen it, it could be, like I say, I think, obviously, we'll come to the natural end of what Star Wars there is to review.
Adam And I still maintain that we should also cover Spaceballs.
Chris Mm.
Adam Um, just as an excuse to watch Spaceballs.
Adam Um, but maybe we need to do Battle Beyond the Stars because it is,
Chris Yeah.
Adam it's the quintessential sort of rip-off, it's the quintessential Star Wars rip-off that isn't Battlestar Galactica.
Lee Oh.
Adam So, yeah.
Adam I think that we may need to um, we we may need to watch it.
Adam Just again, just a just to fucking excuse to watch it.
Chris More.
Chris Would you say it's a reasonable tribute rather than just a rip-off or is it?
Adam No.
Lee Definitely a rip-off, but just done well.
Adam It's it's not it's not it's, yeah.
Adam It's, right.
Adam Um,
Adam they get it right in that, obviously, we never mentioned it previously, like on the last episode,
Adam but A New Hope is based on uh, the film, uh, or partially based on the film Rashomon.
Adam uh, Japanese samurai movie.
Adam And the two characters that are the the sort of main characters who tell the story in Rashomon are two slaves.
Adam And that's who 3PO and R2-D2 are kind of meant to be.
Chris Oh, okay.
Adam He's because it starts off that you're the sort of slave class. And um, so Battle Beyond the Stars kind of does the same thing.
Adam But just decided, well, why don't we do the Seven Samurai in space?
Adam And then someone goes, oh, yeah, but then there's um,
Adam oh, not what, not The Wild Bunch.
Adam What's it called?
Adam The Magnificent Seven.
Adam Everyone's like, oh, but then there's The Magnificent Seven, which is the Western version of um, the Seven Samurai.
Adam And then they go, well, why don't we put both of those together and do it in space?
Adam So, but you have got some, you've got some great people in it.
Adam Thingy um, uh, Robert Vaughn.
Lee Was he in it?
Lee He's like,
Adam Yeah.
Adam Sorry?
Lee Yeah, Robert Vaughn.
Adam Yeah, Robert Vaughn.
Lee Was he in it?
Adam Yeah.
Adam Robert Vaughn, the guy who played what's his name, who played Hannibal Smith in The A-Team, George Peppard.
Chris Oh.
Lee Oh, yeah.
Adam And and John Saxon is the main bad guy.
Lee Oh, nice.
Adam And he is really fucking good.
Adam Uh, with like a big, um, big disfiguring, they can't go for a full, like, Skeletor armor helmet, so they just give him a sort of blinding scar down one side, but, yeah.
Adam It is it's it's entertaining, but but do not do not feel that you, you know,
Adam in any, no one's gonna watch it and accent go, "Oh, this must be one of the new Star Warses.
Adam This must be The Mandalorian," or something, they're not gonna do that.
Lee If you like, If you like the feel of The Last Starfighter, you would like this film.
Chris Oh, yeah, and I did like that.
Lee Okay.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Yeah, actually, yeah, it's very sort of similar sort of vibe.
Adam And actually it's it's a pretty entertaining film, it is just so fucking ludicrous.
Adam Um,
Chris Before I got access to Star Wars, Last Starfighter, I used to just think if I played computer games well enough, it could happen, it might.
Adam It still could. It still could.
Chris But I was I wasn't good enough, I decided.
Adam It was one bit in that film, used to give the put the shits right at me, which is when they're growing a clone under a duvet.
Chris Oh, yeah.
Adam I just found that bit, yeah.
Adam Yeah, found that a bit much.
Adam But,
Adam yeah.
Adam Yeah.
Adam There we go.
Adam So,
Adam um,
Adam it's The Empire Strikes Back.
Adam Where should, I mean, where do we start?
Adam Um,
Adam I suppose we start at the beginning with beautiful probe droids on Hoth.
Adam I have,
Adam it has to be.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Oh, my god. Such a great design.
Adam Exactly, it's just so it's obvious what it is, and it's it's not obvious what it is, but it's obviously evil.
Lee Yeah.
Adam They've just got that so right.
Adam And um,
Adam yeah, and then obviously you get the um, uh,
Adam you know, you get Tauntaun. [making noise]
Adam I do like Tauntauns, because I can do the noise.
Adam And that's yeah.
Adam But yeah.
Chris Do you like how warm inside they are?
Adam Yes.
Adam And I thought they smelled well.
Adam [making noise] which is where you can take it eventually.
Adam If you've said it along to the film often enough, apparently.
Adam Has to be said, Tauntauns.
Adam That's one thing that I think with this is, oh, actually, yeah.
Adam I didn't know this until sort of, well, the other day, that Empire Strikes Back's kind of an independent film.
Adam Because I didn't realize this is that George Lucas stumped up all the money to make it.
Adam He didn't do it with a studio.
Lee Oh, nice.
Adam I think he eventually had to get Fox were gonna release it anyway.
Adam Hm.
Adam Like, they were gonna be the distributor.
Adam But I think so he went to them in the end to get a bit of extra money that he needed.
Adam But basically, yeah, he stumped up all the cash for this so that he would retain sort of all the rights and all the intellectual properties and everything else like that.
Adam And,
Lee Same with the prequels.
Adam Mm.
Adam It's but it's just an insanely good.
Chris Yeah.
Chris So.
Chris Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Chris So that seems it's surprising.
Chris So he made so much from the first one.
Chris Because, yeah.
Chris That's quite impressive.
Adam And it meant that he could sort of take it in the direction he wanted without having to sort of go to committee, you know.
Chris At this point, that people really liked this, so can you have more of that?
Adam People really liked trash compactors, can we do more trash compactors and stuff?
Adam That's,
Lee Well, that's the Gary Kurtz, isn't it, one of the producers, isn't it? One of the reasons why he parted company at Empire because he said that he could see the way it was going.
Lee That toy sales were actually making creative decisions when it came to the story.
Lee So that's why he let Empire be the last one he did with him.
Adam Oh, right.
Chris He could see George moving to the dark side.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Yeah, he he knew he knew where George was going.
Chris It was um, like I think this was such a great start, a bit um, because it doesn't follow on exactly from um, a New Hope. So you don't really know what's going on.
Chris You suddenly see Luke on the Tauntaun in um, snowy, you know, landscape, and then he gets whacked by the Wampa.
Chris Like, that is such a good uh, unexpected beginning to this.
Adam When he, yeah, when you see Luke outside, whackin' his Wampa.
Adam And you said, I like, I didn't expect it to start there.
Adam No.
Chris Yeah, and and they do such a good job of showing the icy planet.
Chris Um, there's one thing I thought actually, watching it this time, I realized the three different locations that they do in this are all so iconic.
Adam Oh, yeah.
Adam I think because weirdly enough, it's it's odd because in Star Wars and in Return of the Jedi, they obviously have the Death Star.
Adam But in this, the Empire's kind of ruthless in a weird way.
Chris Yeah.
Adam You know that it's a you know that it's a fleet of um, or like an Imperial Navy out there.
Adam But there's no no one's got a home base almost, it's like Vader's just prowling around on the Super Star Destroyer.
Adam But also, I think, um, I think this is one of the few Star Wars ones that doesn't have anything on Tatooine.
Chris Mm.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Which and I think I like, I think it's almost when when you look at it just as sort of Star Wars Empire Strikes Back without any of the prequel stuff coming into it.
Adam It is it's almost like, right, we started at Desert, so what do we go for next?
Adam You go the complete opposite, you just turn, right, we freeze that.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And actually, one thing with the Tauntauns, with the and with the, um, uh,
Adam I think with the AT-ATs later and stuff like that, the,
Adam interesting thing is how good the stop motion stuff is.
Lee It looks incredible.
Adam Yeah.
Adam You know, and it it's like the Tauntauns are far, when you see people riding around on the Tauntauns,
Adam it's far more believable than the Stormtroopers on the um, CGI dewbacks.
Lee Yeah.
Adam That they added in and stuff.
Adam Actually, I think that's the other great tribute to this is that how little it's interfered with.
Chris Mm.
Adam In terms of like, added stuff.
Adam It's only sort of little enhancements and,
Chris Boba Fett's voice, I noticed this time.
Adam Yes.
Adam Yes.
Chris I don't know if I'd seen this version previous to this, I might have done, but um, I definitely noticed it now.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Yeah, because I don't think it was because this, I actually saw this at the pictures, the special edition.
Lee Yeah.
Lee We did.
Adam Yeah, we went, and then, but weirdly enough, it was the only one I went to, and it's the one with the least changes, but I also think it was, yeah, but I do want to see Empire Strikes Back on the big screen.
Adam So,
Adam I like, I like the addition of my favorite spaceship in the whole history of science fiction.
Adam Makes an appearance in this one, but it didn't in the original version, which is the Tydirium shuttle.
Lee Yeah.
Chris Oh, interesting.
Lee My favorite spaceship ever, that one.
Adam I mean, I mean, cutting to that bit at the end, that's one thing that, that's a change that does annoy me slightly is the when it, because Vader marching off with just get my shuttle.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And again, it's what I was saying about with angry Vader at the very start of a New Hope.
Adam I like pissed off Vader.
Lee Yeah.
Adam He just, you know, especially now you've followed Anakin's story.
Adam You are kind of like, yeah, that would be him.
Adam Oh, get the shuttle.
Chris Yeah.
Adam He's got a he's got a cob on.
Adam But apparently, yeah, they changed that because George Lucas sort of wan was like, "Oh, I'm not sure if people know where Vader's meant to be when he contacts Luke," and it's like, no, everyone knows where he's meant to be.
Adam George, you're overthinking it.
Adam Dear.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And it does annoy me that the landing of the shuttle is on, is actually a Death Star hangar.
Lee Hm.
Adam And it's the one from Return of the Jedi, and you can actually just about see what is it, Moff Jerjerrod,
Lee Yeah.
Adam the guy who's in charge of the second Death Star, yeah.
Adam You can just about see him marching along to greet Vader as the ramp's coming down and stuff.
Adam And you're like,
Adam you just didn't need to, it's not not that sort of, not that bothersome, I don't think.
Lee I So, I I've got to say, the one thing that.
Lee I liked all the changes, as you say, they were much more minimal this time.
Lee They avoided the stuff I hated, which was adding in all that unnecessary extra stuff that just took you out of the world.
Lee Um, but I'd forgotten just how bad the um, the projection of the Emperor was in, like, in the original.
Adam Yeah.
Lee It doesn't even look like a man, it looks like a massive frog.
Lee Like, it's it was.
Adam It wasn't.
Lee It was a woman with a chimpanzee's eyes projecting on top of him.
Lee That's how they did the original effect.
Lee So you were right, it didn't look like a man.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And and it's and it's the voice of the professor from Legend of Hell House.
Lee Oh, nice.
Adam And um, yeah, uh, Clive Revill, that's it.
Adam And yeah, um,
Adam and again, that is a change that I have absolutely no problem with on the basis that it's like,
Adam yeah, but by now, it's a bit fucking odd if it's not Ian McDiarmid.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Yeah.
Lee But he's a bit chubbier in Empire, though, isn't he?
Adam He is a bit chubbier, yeah.
Adam He's it's it's a lot more scrotal.
Adam And it makes me wonder, the mysterious prune face, is he the Emperor?
Adam Is he a clone of the Emperor?
Adam But we'll come to that in Return of the Jedi.
Adam Except we won't, because you don't fucking see him.
Adam I had the figure, though, I had the figure.
Adam But, um,
Lee And a really dodgy blurred photo on the blister pack, but you hardly see him at all.
Adam Yeah.
Adam It's I I didn't know, I assumed he was in Jabba's Palace for years.
Adam Turns out, he's one of the rebels. Hey, there we go.
Adam So,
Adam that um, actually, and if we're when we're talking about things that the sort of, you know,
Adam changes and things like that.
Adam Why on Earth didn't they change the dick whale?
Adam You know when they're in the asteroid and the dick whale comes out and tries to eat.
Lee Oh, yeah, yeah.
Adam Like, land inside it.
Adam Movement.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Yeah, it's so shit, yeah.
Adam It's just it's like it's a hippo.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Whale hippo penis that comes out of an asteroid.
Adam And,
Adam yeah.
Adam You know, you got rid of the Wolfman, who's quite iconic.
Adam In the cantina.
Adam But you leave that in.
Adam And it's like, you could have gone a town with that.
Adam You could have had, yeah.
Lee They.
Adam That's a fate to be taken.
Chris That must have stuck in my mind in a really strange way, because I totally do not see it as bad.
Chris Like, there's something I still remember when I first saw it, and it just blew my mind, I was like, what is that?
Chris And I must have been pretty young when I saw it.
Adam I think my first experience of this was a pirate as well.
Adam Like, it was, so it was like a good few generations down by the time we'd got it.
Adam And so everything to me, weirdly enough, there's parts of this that almost feel like a video nasty, because it just gives it that aesthetic.
Lee Yeah.
Adam But it's that just wherever it's slightly wider and slightly fuzzier, and yeah.
Lee I kept waiting for the for the auto-tracking message to come up and [making noise].
Adam Or like that pirate I had of Pulp Fiction, which had a laugh track.
Lee Oh.
Adam Because someone literally just filmed it in the cinema.
Adam And yeah.
Adam It was it it it kind of made it feel a bit like Georgia Mildred or something, it was.
Lee What?
Lee Sorry.
Lee What?
Lee What?
Adam He's seen pickled pickled onions in bed.
Adam I bet he does.
Adam He's a pickled onions in bed kind of guy.
Adam Mind you.
Adam Mind you, at that point, I'm probably have to nail my own flat, my own flag to that as well.
Adam It's not been unknown.
Lee Talking about the beginning at the um, uh, the stuff on Hoth.
Lee Um, I absolutely, I like the very first vision you get of the AT-ATs as they come out as when you see them through the through like the the goggles, so they see the feet on the ground, and then it kind of pans up, and you go, oh, shit, and then, they just like saying, the stop motion looks fantastic.
Lee Um, but the one thing I never thought about before,
Lee they're the huge, great big things, we only ever see inside the head where they're being driven.
Lee What's inside the rest of that body, is it just like a big empty hangar or,
Adam Is it's true, so I believe.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Yeah.
Lee Troops.
Adam There's troops.
Lee Yeah.
Lee So that's how they get them in.
Adam Oh, I did I did have a look, I did have a look after um, um, Rogue One.
Adam The they are slightly different AT-ATs in Rogue One.
Chris Mm.
Adam They're because they've got like basically those are cargo cranes.
Adam I mean, they've still got a gun head, but they're cargo cranes essentially, so yeah.
Adam But, um,
Adam but I think all the again, it's like, there's not much that they add new.
Adam But the stuff they do add is so fucking cool and again, everything's so fucking iconic.
Adam You've got the AT-ATs.
Adam And you've got, um, and well, and like the Super Star Destroyer and everything.
Adam Yeah.
Chris Uh.
Adam No.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And actually, that's that's the,
Adam that's that's the the the thing with um,
Adam within this you have a lot of a weird sort of sense where you do have a lot of humor, because it's one big chase from uh,
Adam Han, Leia, Chewie, and 3PO, it's basically the whole film is their pursuit leaving Hoth.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And obviously, Luke Luke has a Luke's story is a different thing.
Adam But there is a really weird vibe in this as well, where a Vader just working his way through the crew.
Adam As the,
Adam it's it's weird because it's it's funny, but it also just gives you a sense of why everyone is so committed.
Adam As it's like, yeah, he's just like, apology accepted, Captain Needa.
Chris Yeah.
Adam And he's,
Lee I have got a note here that just says, fuck joining the Admiralty.
Adam Um.
Lee Yeah, as soon as anybody makes the slightest mistake, he's like, right, they're dead. Why would you spend your life trying to work your way up to work at this place?
Lee He's just gonna kill.
Chris At the end.
Adam You know.
Chris When the Millennium Falcon flies off and he looks away and then he looks back again, and then he's walking down the ship, and everyone's like, uh, who's gonna get it?
Adam I actually quite like the idea, but I do like it.
Adam Because Admiral Piett does turn up in Return of the Jedi.
Adam So he does make it, it's obvious that Vader doesn't has decided, no, you've you've did your best.
Adam We need,
Adam that was a squeak.
Adam You know, that's there.
Adam But for the grace, whereas obviously Mr. Bronson just gets it immediately.
Adam Because he's like, well,
Adam he's he's there sort of like, right, no, you've you've you've fucked up this, you've fucked up this mission.
Adam And what's the point, you killed Danny Kendal?
Adam So,
Adam you know,
Adam that's it.
Adam And also.
Adam You got the magnificent Julian Glover as the um,
Adam uh, AT-AT commander, like the general, General Veers.
Adam Um, again,
Adam and the only trouble is is that every time I see him in anything, I just think, oh, so that's who Mark Gatiss plays when they remake this.
Adam So,
Adam because that just seems to be his his role in life, I can just see him doing it.
Adam So, but,
Adam yeah.
Adam You've got and you've got Snowtroopers, you've got um,
Adam the AT-AT drivers, which are essentially, I mean, if the toys are anything to go by, they're just a differently painted TIE fighter pilot.
Adam But,
Adam Yeah, there's there's a lot more sort of there's just more Empire.
Adam I mean, it's in the title.
Adam But you do get, I think, you get more you get more Empire bang for your buck.
Adam And you see much more of them as a force, like as an as just a basic military force.
Adam Rather than, well, you can blow up planets, you of course you win.
Adam You know, so.
Chris Yeah, they do such a good job of expanding the universe, adding a lot more to the story and the empire, but not making it tacky and not overloading it somehow. Like, you know, you follow it perfectly.
Chris Um, it flows really nicely. Um,
Chris but yeah, but it still is a well-expanded and darkened universe.
Adam Yeah, because you've got because the director.
Adam Because obviously, it's not including um, offshoot or Star Wars stories, sort of stuff.
Adam This is the first one we've watched not directed by George Lucas, isn't it?
Adam Because George Lucas did all the prequels, and he did um, a New Hope.
Adam And then you've got Irving Kershner does this.
Adam And.
Lee And Richard Marquand, I think, it I think he did Return, I think it was.
Adam Sorry?
Lee I think Marquand, I think he Marquand did Return, I think it was as well, wasn't it?
Adam Yeah, I think it was.
Adam Yeah, so it's only of of the three.
Adam But apparently, he was very sort of again, I mean, his only you know, as I say, the way it was produced, um,
Adam George Lucas was his only boss.
Adam You know, and but he um,
Adam basically said, well, I'll do it, but I want to rework the script, and apparently the one thing he did was put a lot more of the characterization in.
Adam And that that, I think, really shows because this is the one this does give you everyone as you know them.
Adam Or presents all the things that you associate with the those characters.
Adam And um,
Adam And actually, the the other thing as well, watching it, and again, I've been,
Adam it's the thing of enjoying watching it with the prequels in mind, is weirdly enough, this is the only one that doesn't.
Adam It's it's slightly annoying that this isn't the first time we've seen Boba Fett because it used to be the first time you'd see Boba Fett.
Adam And he's the bollocks, even though he literally doesn't do anything.
Adam But he's just cool enough that it's like it plays, and everyone reacts to him.
Adam The right way.
Lee He's just my favorite.
Lee He's The Marvin the Martian, he's the one that is very, there's very little screen time.
Lee But he's the one that sticks in your mind as the coolest thing you've ever seen.
Chris But he's so he is so pivotal, even though he doesn't have a huge amount of action, what he does is so important.
Adam Exactly.
Adam And but I think, but it's really annoying now that it's like, oh, yeah, I saw him as a 12-year-old with a stupid haircut.
Adam And that's that's diminishing in that sense.
Adam And similarly, the one thing I think that it really,
Adam it doesn't necessarily alter it, but it changes the conception of it.
Adam So now you watch it, I mean, you always did after the first time you fucking saw it.
Adam But you you watch it knowing who Yoda is, but now it's much more about, it kind of turns it into it's much more about,
Adam watching Luke not know that than it is about discovering it with Luke.
Chris It's good that that still works, though. You still.
Adam It still works.
Adam Yeah, like you say.
Chris Both is fine, but it's you can definitely rewatch that again and again and not, you know, not be bored by the fact that you do know who Yoda is.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And I tell you what, it's he is,
Adam for a start, it it felt a bit like, you know, you know in Red Dwarf?
Adam Where um, Lister is revived, and Holly's talking to him and he says something about, oh, yeah, she wouldn't be much good as a companion unless you wanted to grit your drive.
Adam Because,
Adam Kryten got turned into a pile of dust.
Adam And he going, Holly, and it's like, yeah, sorry, Dave.
Adam I've been on my own too long.
Adam I think I've gone a bit weird.
Adam And I think that's what's definitely happened to Yoda.
Adam Because Yoda.
Adam Yoda's clearly like, you know, he's been alone for a while and gone a bit balmy.
Adam And it's,
Adam especially how impressed he is with the torch.
Lee Yeah, I thought that as well.
Lee I was like, you know.
Adam He used to hang around on Coruscant in floating chairs.
Adam And shit like that.
Adam And it's like [making noise].
Adam And now he's very impressed with the torch.
Lee I love to see like him like beating the shit out of R2-D2, though, for the rules.
Lee I thought that was a good bit.
Adam I think weirdly enough, I just love the the puppet is,
Adam again, they haven't really.
Adam Done anything to change the puppet work, because it's so fucking good.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And you so believe.
Adam Apparently, Frank Oz said that quite often uh, Kershner directed the puppet, so he'd talk to Yoda.
Adam Not talk to Frank Oz, like saying to him, can you make him do this?
Adam It'd be like, right, if you can just go over here and like look him in the eye, essentially.
Adam And so.
Adam And it does, you know.
Adam He is real.
Adam He's definitely real.
Lee Apparently, George Lucas actually asked Jim Henson to be Yoda.
Lee But Jim Henson said, I can't, I'm making a film, I'm busy.
Adam Well, our.
Lee Frank.
Adam And Frank Oz did it.
Adam And good god.
Adam Because I mean, without Frank Oz's voice.
Adam Yeah.
Adam I mean, would you put your hand in, I mean, you know how.
Adam You know how hard.
Adam [making noises]
Adam And all he wanted was a week.
Adam I.
Adam I often wondered.
Adam If it was meant to be that he was a droid with male pattern baldness, because he's got the, you know,
Adam he's got the the Donald Pleasance, he's got the, he's got the sort of a, la, p, sha.
Adam Wouldn't it.
Adam His code name.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Would be.
Adam A la p sha.
Adam Wouldn't it.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Yeah, have you got these jokes written down, Wes?
Adam But again,
Adam Bespin does feel, Bespin feels real.
Adam Without any explanation.
Adam You've got all the guards dressed up in like their little blue tunics and everything.
Adam And sort of, you know.
Adam And it's clear that Lobot is doing something, but what we don't know.
Adam But again, we don't question it, and we bought the figure.
Chris And Lobot controls by by Lando's watch.
Adam Yes.
Adam So he's Lando's watchman, essentially.
Adam I.
Adam I really want a cloud car.
Adam I think they look great.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Actually, yes, that was that was another that was a pretty cool toy, even though it's just basically two cockpits glued together.
Adam Yeah, but if you if you get that toy and you hold it in your hands and then turn it that way, you've got one of the guns from Black Hole.
Adam That's true, and from the,
Adam Which is technically we're doing Battle Beyond the Stars.
Adam At some point, we should do Black Hole.
Adam Oh.
Adam We're definitely doing Black Hole.
Adam Because any excuse where it's like, you know, it's because I wanted to originally, Mos Eisley Mos Eisley Happy Hour.
Adam What I wanted to do is I want to do a podcast that was purely Disney films with disemboweling in them, but Black Hole was the only one I could find.
Adam So, you know.
Adam Other than other than obviously the cut scene in Frozen.
Adam So, but they threw through Olaf.
Adam A fucking hot knife.
Adam Or was that just or was that just a fever dream I had once?
Adam The warmed up stainless steel dildo.
Adam Oh, we've.
Adam You've had to take it to you've had to take it to a to a seriously dodgy direction, haven't you?
Adam Yeah.
Adam What, they're turning in his carbonite grave.
Adam What, you get.
Adam Is he?
Adam No, the whole unit goes.
Adam It's on the again, it's on a gimbal system like the slave one, you know, it's it's it's all it's all gravy.
Adam Don't worry about it.
Adam Don't question.
Adam Don't question it.
Adam It's fine.
Adam I'll explain later.
Adam But um,
Adam well.
Adam I seem to have come to all my notes apart from the word bum.
Adam In Claire's handwriting on this page.
Adam So.
Adam So if if if people have no idea what we're talking about, Google bad lip reading, seagull, stop it now. And while you're there, you'll also find, um, uh, bushes of love. Uh, or or or me and Claire's song, as it's known. Some people have, uh, lady and red. We have bushes of love. That's also because our razors are broken. And on that pubic bombshell, um, right, here we go.
Adam Now, can I just say, I don't care if I don't care if we're going spinal tap with this shit.
Adam But just no half marks, because my tiny brain doesn't do it.
Adam Fair enough.
Adam What do you mean by,
Adam 44?
Adam And that's it.
Adam I was thinking that could be the so shockingly in an incredible turn of events.
Adam Underdog and least popular film in the franchise, Empire Strikes Back, gets 44 Lobots out of 40.
Adam Yay!
Adam Yay!
Adam Yay!
Adam Were was it not Ugly Ugnauts?
Adam Oh, yes.
Adam So it's 40 Ugnauts.
Adam There we go.
Adam 40 Ugly Ugnauts.
Adam And they are ugly Ugnauts.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Oh.
Adam And,
Adam we'll know, the Nikk Nakkie.
Adam He's all right.
Adam I've only.
Adam He's.
Adam He's an.
