The Fly 1986

About
Having witnessed the original, the team turn to David Cronenberg’s reimagining of “The Fly” from 1986. A film in which an 80s super-sleaze invents the Reaction Video; Jeff Goldblum spunks his finger all over the bathroom mirror; and a baboon makes jam (but definitely not as cute as that sounds). Along the way we discuss “Possessor”, “Matinee”, “St Maud” (again, but it’s so good!), “Sputnik”, “Donnie Darko”, “Tales That Witness Madness” and “Willie’s Wonderland”. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers, and join us. APOLOGIES FOR ANY SOUND QUALITY ISSUES -CURRENT QUARANTINE MEASURES MEANT WE HAD TO RECORD THIS EPISODE REMOTELY.

Lee Good evening and welcome to Horra. I'm Lee.
Chris I'm Chris.
Lee I'm Adam.
Lee Sorry, I don't know what I was so excited about for there.
Lee I think it's just because I started, it's just we watched the flyer.
Adam It is that.
Adam And also I announced I was starting before I was ready, then I got excited in shock at my own announcement.
Adam This is what happens when I quit drinking. Fucking hell. Good luck everyone.
Lee I think you've given it titss and teeth and that's what I like to see.
Adam You've you've come into this like uh, I don't know, Bonnie Langford.
Adam You've you've just brought the energy out.
Lee I've never been like into Bonnie Langford before, oddly enough.
Lee But, I I kind of get it.
Chris Well, there's always the first time.
Lee Um,
Lee So, as Chris alluded to, we are here for the second of Adam's birthday choices.
Lee We are here for The Fly again.
Lee This is the 1986 remake.
Chris I really like Adam's birthdays.
Adam I so think that is how we, that's how remakes should be, they should they should be again.
Lee Yeah.
Adam So it's like Texas Chainsaw Massacre Again.
Adam Just just to take that I mean, not in this not in this circumstance certainly, but just to take that sheen off that usually comes with a remake.
Chris Yes, yes, I agree.
Lee Just so you immediately are like, I'm reminding you that what you've done is a bit of a shit version of something that came previously.
Adam Yeah, you know.
Chris Oh,
Adam He's getting controversial already.
Adam It's also just a lovely, it's also just a lovely idea that you get certain ones like The Hills Have Eyes again.
Lee Yeah.
Adam I mean that's, you know, something that was already vaguely meaningless.
Adam But sounded threatening just becomes utterly meaningless.
Lee but yes, this may well be,
Lee uh, the uh, the one of the few times that we prefer the remake but we will get into that when we are ready and not before.
Lee So before we get into that.
Lee Adam, what have you been watching in the last fortnight?
Adam Well, uh, Clare's uh Clare wanted for it ended up being date night.
Adam So you know that's just the way it goes.
Adam Um, we were drinking tiny bottles of champagne.
Adam And um, Clare wanted to watch another anthology movie.
Adam Uh, so we of a selection we went with Tales That Witness Madness.
Lee Oh, nice.
Adam Which which is both wonderful but also possibly the oddest one.
Adam Certainly in terms of just the stories are just like, you what?
Lee Huh?
Adam It's like, you know.
Adam So.
Adam I mean, again, we're not it wouldn't be giving spoilers away.
Adam Because this is, you know, this is.
Adam But here's the list for you Chris for Tales That Witness Madness.
Adam Um,
Adam An invisible tiger.
Adam A haunted penny farthing.
Adam A man who shags a tree.
Adam And sort of like the the most sort of weird.
Unknown Racially ambiguous.
Adam Racially, thank you.
Adam Racially ambiguous um, uh party or meeting.
Adam So.
Chris Mm.
Adam I'm I'm going to have to leave you there.
Adam Sorry Lee, sorry man.
Lee That's all right.
Adam Uh if you want to cut and then we can.
Lee No.
Lee Let's leave it.
Lee Let's leave her rolling.
Lee Let's go with it if you want.
Lee Just Dandeo.
Lee So, Chris, have you watched anything in the last fortnight?
Chris I have.
Chris I I watched uh the my first ever Creepshow Holiday Special.
Chris Which is also my first ever Creepshow, I think.
Chris We haven't watched any, have we?
Lee We've not.
Lee No.
Chris No.
Chris Right.
Chris And but so I think there used to be a Creepshow and these are sort of a new lot because they're modern.
Chris But I'm sure Creepshow's been around for a long time.
Lee They were films, uh, they were.
Chris Oh, right.
Lee Romero um was involved.
Chris Okay.
Lee Yeah, Stephen King stories, I think the first ones.
Lee Stephen King's certainly in it.
Chris Okay.
Lee But yeah, they're really good.
Chris Well, they did they did two references, uh one to Landis and oh, I've got one of the other ones.
Chris But so I sort of thought, well, maybe they've been involved in it previously.
Lee Oh, I vaguely remember.
Lee Is this the one where the young guy goes to the store at night in the dark?
Chris No.
Lee Okay.
Lee Sorry.
Chris No.
Chris Um so so it's called Shapeshifters Anonymous and it has a rather anxious man.
Chris Who's worried that he is a uh a murderer.
Chris Um and so he goes to this group called shapeshifters anonymous and they're all shapeshifters.
Chris Um,
Chris And it like it's I thought it was great fun.
Chris I thought it was funny and great style and yeah, just very entertaining.
Chris So it's 45 minutes long, um, but yeah.
Chris Like so it starts with him and he's worried about because he's finding strange things in his toilet.
Chris And, you know, I mean that tells you the sort of comedy.
Chris But it's.
Chris I won't give too much away.
Chris But uh to give you some idea.
Chris I thought I'd look it up afterwards and see what do people think of it.
Chris Because I thought it was just pretty good really.
Chris And if I'd seen that around Christmas time, I think, yeah, this is this is added to my Christmas experience.
Chris Um, so two people liked it, it's on Rotten Tomatoes and they said a full action.
Chris Drama horror Christmas film in less than an hour from Creepshow for shudder might become an annual tree.
Chris And that's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking.
Chris Someone else said, if you like your festivities with a side of fun and frights.
Chris Then a Creepshow Holiday Special is the perfect Yule Tide viewing.
Chris Yep, sure.
Chris And then two other people who didn't like it.
Chris Uh not a single thing in a Creepshow Holiday Special is new or clever.
Chris Well, that's just rubbish that.
Chris Means nothing.
Chris A Creepshow Holiday Special doesn't feel all that special.
Chris Caught between immensely imaginative ideas, but no proper method of bringing such delights to life.
Chris Well, again, I completely disagree with that.
Chris They absolutely brought the imaginative ideas to life, so I don't know what they're talking about.
Lee Right.
Chris Yeah, so.
Chris So I enjoyed myself.
Lee I've just Googled it.
Lee I did not see that one.
Lee I saw the season, but I didn't see that.
Lee Oh.
Lee So I will definitely be going back to watch that because it looks very especially with your uh sparkling review.
Chris Yeah.
Chris Yeah, yeah, I think that was a lot of fun.
Lee Excellent.
Lee Well done.
Lee Anything else?
Chris No, no, that's me this week.
Lee Fantastic.
Lee Right, I shall give you a quick rundown because I've been extremely busy.
Lee Uh but in Adam's absence, whoa.
Adam Oh, hello.
Adam Sorry about that.
Lee That's all right.
Adam Just proving that Yeah, just just proving that we are.
Adam Uh unedited is that was me getting the Sainsbury's shopping in.
Lee I'm going to.
Chris Hello, Bob.
Lee Did you get Chili Marmite, you can only get it in Sainsbury's.
Lee I'm very excited by it.
Lee Uh, my entire family are currently scouring their online shops trying to purchase me some.
Adam Now, I will keep an eye out for that.
Adam So I send that to you as a spicy care package.
Lee Oh.
Adam Hm.
Lee So, sorry Adam, you were saying you watched Tales That Witness Madness.
Adam Yes, yeah, so, yeah.
Adam So the rundown of the stories, The Invisible Tiger, the haunted penny farthing, um, a man who sleeps with a tree.
Adam And I.
Adam Yeah.
Adam A racially ambiguous Carly Voodoo Hawaiian ceremony.
Lee Yeah.
Adam With played by white people.
Adam So yeah, that was just that was just with, you know, utterly confusing.
Adam But it is as fucking barmy as that sounds.
Adam So and yeah, Clare enjoyed that.
Chris Does it has Donald Pleasence in it?
Adam It has Donald Pleasence in it and he really proves his own, he comes into it very well.
Adam It's also got um Jack Hawkins in it from Theater of Blood and it's his last film.
Adam But by this point it's when he uh he lost his voice to throat cancer.
Adam But they kept um Charles Gray overdubbed him in loads of films.
Adam So he was still working, he just couldn't speak.
Adam But yeah, so Charles Gray did and it's Charles Gray on here I believe as well.
Adam So.
Adam Um.
Adam But uh.
Adam And um.
Adam I also watched.
Adam I think I think this was Netflix, there's a Russian uh Russian horror film called Sputnik.
Adam Uh, Russian sci-fi horror thriller, so I mean we're in the same territory.
Adam It actually thinking about it, this this is all quite thematic after Tales That Witness Madness.
Adam Um, but yeah, that's that's really that's really worth a watch.
Adam It's basically aliens versus military sort of type shenanigans.
Adam Reminded me a lot of Quatermass.
Adam But it's basically, yeah, an astronaut returns and.
Adam Is essentially possessed of an alien.
Adam Um, but it's much more visceral than that and it's actually um but it's yeah, I I really rather enjoyed it.
Adam It's definitely worth a check out. It's not mind-blowing but it's yeah, there are far worse films out there that you can spend an hour and a half with or whatever it was.
Adam And um, yeah, that and has some some good alien effects in it and also some good stylistic effects.
Adam There's lots of it where bits of it just are security cameras.
Lee Oh, right.
Adam So you so you get kind of it gives it a bit of a documentary element.
Adam It's not it is not found footage and you know, money has been spent.
Adam It isn't Puts it in a category like the other.
Adam But um, yeah, they do this sort of thing and but it makes sense later on because there's certain bits where you only see the you see the alien kill.
Adam But in um only in like heat vision or night vision.
Adam And it's one of the weirdest things to watch because you're like, how have they actually fucking done that?
Adam Because, you know, it's like they've obviously I mean, obviously they are digitally fucking with the image, but yeah, you've got like an alien giving off a heat signal.
Adam But it's like, right, so you'd actually have to have had it there to make that heat signal.
Adam You know, to because it's a very weird spindly beastie thing.
Adam So.
Adam Yeah, um, but yeah.
Adam That's definitely worth what's that Sputnik.
Adam And I also watched uh Possessor.
Adam Which is directed and written by Brandon Cronenberg, son of David Cronenberg.
Chris Oh.
Adam And frankly, the apple don't fall far from the tree.
Lee Oh, really?
Adam Not to Yeah.
Adam It it is it's fucking it's really good.
Adam It's basically, I mean, if if you refer I can refer to it as a sci-fi thriller with body horror.
Chris Hm.
Adam Fuck me, that's like that's the first 12 years of David Cronenberg's fucking career, isn't it?
Lee Yeah.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Um, but it's yeah, it's it reminded me and not just because Jennifer Jason Lee's in it, but you reminded me a bit of say something like Existenz.
Adam Or Scanners.
Lee Yeah.
Adam In that sort of a sense of like being a an actual sort of thriller more than anything else.
Adam Um.
Adam But basically, yeah, you've got uh Andrea Riseborough who played uh Mandy in Mandy um and he's also in Crocodile, which is one of the best fucking Black Mirror stories.
Adam Um.
Adam And um yeah, basically she's an assassin but what they do is.
Adam He's they sort of mind swap you into the body of someone close to the target so you can get to them.
Lee Oh, cool.
Adam So so basically what happens is they sort of pick a person and then they have to analyze her.
Adam Andrea Riseborough has to sort of take on their persona to look so people won't be thinking why they're acting so fucking strangely.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And so so there's a lot of like surveillance watch and everything else like that, then they sort of leap into the body and then finally at the end of it, they uh kill the target and then by committing suicide in the body, they get pulled out.
Lee Oh, cool.
Chris That sounds really good.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And and then, yeah.
Chris A bit harsh.
Adam And yeah, it's uh and I mean, harsh is the fucking word.
Adam Because it's one of those films a bit like say, um, you were never really here.
Adam Where you just like the occasional, the occasional violent bits are really fucking violent.
Adam Like.
Lee Yeah.
Adam You all right, bloody hell, steady on old chap.
Adam It's one of those ones, you know, where someone's like fucking, oh, Jesus.
Adam Yeah, it's really, yeah, it's really brutal in those scenes.
Adam But.
Adam The um you get the sort of lovely thing with it where where because it starts off and she just does a job and then it's the aftermath where she has to go home to her family but you see her having to rehearse talking to her family the same way she has to rehearse being another person.
Chris Hm.
Adam Because like the identity shift is going and everything like that, so she's outside.
Adam So like, oh, hi honey, or you know.
Adam Oh, I'm starving.
Adam Or whatever like that, you know, just to sort of try and uh yeah.
Adam Be themselves.
Lee Oh, okay.
Adam Back to themselves.
Adam And yeah.
Adam So.
Adam It's a lovely.
Lee It sounds.
Adam So you've got that whole sort of weird.
Adam Not subplot but that weird.
Adam Whole other half going to it.
Adam And then she gets pulled in for a job and it goes, well, it it goes wrong and basically the person starts re-exerting their will.
Chris Hm.
Adam And so, yeah, and she can't get out of the body because she can't get the body to uh kill itself.
Lee Oh.
Chris That sounds really good.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Yeah, and it's yeah, and it like I say, it's Brandon Cronenberg, if you if we having watched The Fly, if you're in a Cronenberg movie, he really and like I say, I don't want I don't want it to sound like it's just like, oh, he just does his dad's thing.
Adam Because this.
Adam This feels new, it does it's not in any way looking back at David Cronenberg sort of work.
Adam It doesn't have that it's not like Retro 80s or anything else like that.
Adam It's that's one of the things I really like with it is the tech is very Apple.
Lee Oh, right.
Adam So so rather than the thing because you wouldn't have it nowadays, you wouldn't have like Frankenstein style big banks of sparkling wires and circuits and you know, it wouldn't look like primer or pie or something like that, so all this stuff because it's like commercially used kit.
Adam It all looks it looks like you're sitting on a dentist chair with like a thing over your face and sort of and it's just but there's not a big deal made about that but it just feels so right that everything everything looks like a photocopier, you know, everything sort of like curved lines and beige.
Lee Yeah.
Adam To sort of like.
Adam You know, and it's yeah, like very consumer electronics as it is now.
Adam And yeah, so it feels very it feels very today.
Adam It.
Chris But yeah, when when was the film made?
Adam This uh last year, 2019.
Chris Oh, okay.
Chris All right.
Chris Yeah.
Adam So.
Adam And.
Adam Uh sorry, yeah, last year.
Adam 2020.
Adam Thank you.
Lee Uh.
Adam Uh.
Adam My scientific adviser has advised me that it was.
Adam Yeah, so it's uh two years ago that it was made, it was made in 2019.
Adam And um.
Adam I've got somewhere I haven't watched it yet.
Adam But I have got uh Brandon Cronenberg's first film called Antiviral.
Lee Yes.
Adam Uh so.
Adam I think I'm going to watch that because that's, you know, again, I'm just really I just really like Possessor.
Adam I thought it was great.
Adam So.
Lee Yeah, I remember Antiviral came out and people saying.
Lee As you'd say very similar things to you that.
Lee He's although he obviously his brain works in a very similar way and he's got a very similar way of looking at the world, it doesn't feel like he's just trying to recreate what his dad's done previously.
Lee Like it's totally his own thing, but yeah, you can tell it's definitely his son.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Which.
Lee It's totally selling point.
Adam Is the is the lovely thing of it feels like exactly what his dad would do at his at his age if he was his age now.
Adam Is the best way I can put it and there's no.
Adam You know, I I do love Cronenberg, so there's no I I definitely think that's a compliment.
Adam And it's good to see someone else out there doing because it's a fairly unique take.
Adam So.
Adam You know, it honestly it takes a Canadian to be that brutally cold, I would say.
Lee Yeah.
Chris Yeah.
Adam And yeah, that's all the weather.
Adam So.
Lee Fantastic.
Lee Um, I've been super busy, I don't quite know where to start.
Lee So this is the problem with me, I'm extremes.
Lee Last episode, I hadn't seen anything and now I've got like half a dozen things.
Lee Um.
Adam Yeah, but it's not a backlog, it just bottlenecks and suddenly yeah.
Lee Uh.
Lee So uh, following the episode last week, um where we watched The Fly, um, I watched Matinee as you suggested Adam, uh which I believe you.
Adam What did you think?
Lee Suggest on air?
Adam I think I I think I did, yeah.
Adam But yeah.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Um.
Lee So I, so Joe Dante's uh Matinee, I liked it.
Lee It took a very long time.
Lee Like the first hour, nothing happens and I'm like, is Adam told me about the right film.
Lee Because it's but then when it gets to the end, it's brilliant the last half an hour.
Lee Yeah.
Adam I think I I yeah, I think that's the problem.
Adam Is I I I saw it years and years ago and I think it's that last half hour.
Adam Is my is my memory of it probably, yeah.
Lee Oh, yeah.
Lee Definitely.
Lee When I came away, yeah, I was like, oh, that was great.
Lee And then it wasn't till later on, I was like, there was a point about an hour in where I was like, is this going to go anywhere?
Lee But yeah, I totally I'm totally glad I stuck with it, it was really good.
Lee Um.
Lee It then led me down a bit of a rabbit hole.
Lee There's when they're in the cinema at the end, there's a poster on the wall for a Vincent Price film called Confessions of an Opium Eater.
Adam Oh.
Lee Um.
Lee Which is very, very expensive to buy.
Lee Um, but the whole thing's.
Lee On YouTube.
Lee So I watched half of it.
Adam So is it based on is it Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an.
Lee I believe it's loosely based.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Right.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Um, but the problem with it is.
Lee I think it might have been a time thing.
Lee Like I didn't I didn't think that it was racially insensitive or anything.
Lee But it was so stereotyped that like Vincent Price lands in San Francisco Chinatown.
Lee And every conversation sounds like it was written by a philosopher, like everything is, but we should go and do this.
Adam Oh, right.
Lee Ah, but wise man says and like and it's literally every single thing is just him back and forth.
Lee Ah, but men who move too quickly, this is true, but also and it like after about half an hour.
Lee I was like, just get on with the plot.
Lee And stop with all of these and it.
Lee Drove me slightly mad to the point where I was like, I'm going to bed.
Lee Screw this.
Adam I think you're right, it is a racial caricature definitely to do that.
Adam Dialogue wise and if they broke out in suddenly everyone's really good at kung fu as well.
Adam I think that would.
Lee A little bit.
Adam Maybe that's what happens, maybe that's the last like 20 minutes.
Adam Is bloody goes like fucking.
Lee Oh.
Lee No.
Lee Sorry.
Lee You're right, the first, the first 15 minutes nothing happens apart from a load of people who look like they could be Irish.
Lee Um.
Lee Again, that's not being racist, saying they look, but I mean, because it's early America, I get the impression that they were the Irish immigrants and they were fighting with the Chinese immigrants on the beach.
Lee Um, yeah, so there was a lot of kung fu going on.
Lee And then it was just lots of grasshopper said stuff and I was like.
Lee Oh.
Adam Grabbing.
Lee I was like, oh, this is a very long.
Lee thing so I gave up with that.
Lee Um.
Lee But I'm glad I saw.
Lee Um.
Lee Following your last episode.
Lee I watched Saint Maud.
Adam Oh, yes.
Lee Um.
Lee Darney saw it at the BFI, I think, when it was first released.
Lee And messaged me literally coming out of the cinema going, see it.
Lee Soon as you can, see it.
Lee I finally got my hands on a copy last week.
Lee What a brutal movie.
Adam Fuck is it.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Again, that is something that Possessor has.
Adam It's not it's in a different totally different way.
Adam But it is that sort of thing where you go, fucking Ada.
Lee Mm.
Adam You know, especially especially when she starts scourging with the drawing pins and the shoes.
Lee Yeah, oh that really, really.
Chris That sounds painful already.
Adam Oh, it is great, but yeah.
Lee You'll love it, Chris, it's so depressing and horrible.
Lee It's just bleak as all hell, it's got your Christmas gift written all over it to be honest.
Adam I think I think you would like it, Chris, definitely.
Lee But yeah, fantastic film, really, really enjoyed it.
Lee Um.
Adam We may maybe we'll cover it at some point as well.
Adam Because because yeah, because I mean I think.
Adam Yeah, both of us can work.
Adam The and something that came out like I was reading about reading about it afterwards, I read a interview with the director, Rose Glass.
Adam And.
Adam Uh she said her main inspiration was Taxi Driver.
Adam And I was like, fuck yeah, I could really see that because it's basically it's yeah, it's a.
Adam Repressed female Catholic Taxi Driver.
Adam It's just scarred in all places.
Lee Yeah, it's scarred in all places.
Adam Yeah.
Adam Admittedly, when I first watched it.
Adam I was like and this is again, let's face it, all British Seaside towns look the same.
Adam But at one point she walked past an arcade and I for and just for a second I was like, this is in fucking Southend is it?
Lee Is it when she walked past.
Lee The one called Coney Island because Jennifer said exactly the same.
Lee Just is that in Southend?
Lee No.
Lee It isn't.
Lee No, no, no.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And and then immediately she goes up the biggest set of steps you've ever seen.
Lee Oh.
Adam To a massive grand house.
Adam You're like, that's not Southend.
Lee Yeah.
Adam It hasn't it hasn't been firebombed and they haven't got anything that high at Southend apart from I don't know the cab drivers.
Lee Oh.
Lee Um.
Lee But yes, I really enjoyed I enjoyed might be a strange choice of words.
Lee But yeah, it was a good film.
Lee Um.
Lee So I followed that up with another miserable favorite of Chris's, uh following Chris's suggestion, uh bought on Blu-ray recently.
Lee Donnie Darko.
Chris Oh.
Adam The Arrow one.
Lee Yes.
Lee Yeah.
Lee To watch the director's cut to see if it made any more sense.
Lee Was it a better film?
Lee Yes.
Lee Did it make any more sense?
Lee No.
Lee Still haven't got a bleeding clue what the bloody hell's going on.
Lee But loved every minute of it, so you can't go wrong.
Lee Um.
Chris Yeah.
Lee The only reason I'll bring that up is the so the woman who is the coach of the little girl's dancing squadron.
Chris Yeah.
Lee Uh the very religious teacher.
Lee Yeah, who's a bit of a pain in the ass.
Lee She then turns up in this evening in this week's favorite watch.
Lee Um, Willie's Wonderland with Nicholas Cage.
Adam Oh, yes.
Lee So.
Lee Yeah.
Lee It's back shit.
Lee Um.
Lee Oh, yeah.
Lee It's every bit as lunatic as you'd imagine.
Lee Uh somebody sent me um a link to a kind of review.
Lee It was like, oh yeah.
Lee This is Nicholas Cage, he plays a mute who goes in to clean up a child's amusement park, uh where all of the characters are possessed by child murderers.
Lee Um and he has to battle them one by one as the night goes on.
Lee And it is that, nothing else.
Adam And you see.
Adam You see I feel there's.
Adam Key information that was missed out of that trailer that would only make me want to see it more.
Lee Oh.
Lee God, I tell you what.
Lee Man, that should be the that should be on the cover of the fucking DVD.
Lee If you want to see Nicholas Cage to, watch him kill his kids.
Lee So much fun.
Lee Um.
Adam And it's.
Adam It's all on.
Lee I've been doing that to every item in my house at the moment.
Lee It's driving me.
Lee Um.
Lee So yeah, that's it.
Lee Pretty much.
Lee Uh and I watched the I won't cover it here.
Lee Because it isn't necessarily horror.
Lee Uh but the Netflix documentary on the Cecil Hotel is well worth a watch.
Adam Oh, yeah.
Adam I've still got to check that out.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Yeah, it is it is.
Lee Well worth watching.
Lee Um.
Lee Yeah, and it is it is funny to see how just a little bit of a normal disappearing, you know, somebody disappears and there's a little bit of information that's a little bit odd.
Lee And all of a sudden, thousands of people all over the world appear to be just giving up their jobs.
Lee And spending all day every day on the internet trying to solve this missing person crypts.
Lee Yeah.
Lee Bizarre.
Lee But fantastic.
Adam I take it I take it you've seen Don't Fuck With Cats.
Lee No.
Adam Right.
Adam Seriously, if that's if that's the stuff you've enjoyed at the Cecil Hotel, watch Don't Fuck With Cats.
Adam I promise you.
Adam It is it's like one of those things where you just like, holy shit, you cannot do anything.
Adam As long as you've got enough determined people with access to the internet.
Adam Nothing can be unseen.
Lee Oh, really?
Adam Yeah.
Adam It's.
Adam I mean it's an I think I I think I don't think it's that long, I think it's like three episodes maybe, um, even if it is or it's just a yeah.
Adam I think it's only like three episodes or something but it's really yeah, basically a guy and you and the good thing is they don't get in.
Adam You know, you're not you're not seeing animals being tortured or anything.
Adam But you have like basically this guy uploaded a video of him killing a kitten and people were outraged by it.
Adam And then the guy showed up doing another video similar sort of thing.
Adam And yeah, basically everyone was like, look what this sick fuck's done, let's track him down.
Adam And they do.
Lee Nice.
Adam And it's like you don't see the guy in the video, you just see a pair of hands.
Adam And they managed to pinpoint where the fucking apartment probably is on the based on the basis of like fitments, lighting.
Adam Um, you know, sort of stuff like cigarette packets in the background.
Adam Like you can see the lettering on them and things like that.
Adam Seriously, it is like.
Adam Such a.
Adam It's incredible, especially because I believe if yeah.
Adam Again, it's not a spoiler because it's a criminal case, so everything's out there.
Adam Is this guy did kill someone eventually.
Adam But basically, when he killed someone, the police just turned up.
Adam And found like the dismembered body in the bin.
Adam And didn't think much of it.
Adam Or, you know, didn't think that.
Adam Seriously, and it's only because the rest of these people going, by the way, we've got the name of this guy killed a cat and we're fairly certainly killed a fucking woman.
Adam And eventually the police are like, oh, yeah, well, we'll take a look at it, oh, yeah, no, probably, yeah, you're probably right there, probably we'll piss going get him, hey.
Adam Seriously, it's like it's fucking ludicrous.
Adam And it's like I say, the whole thing is a testament to just the people who just pour over this stuff like the sort of web of online detectives.
Adam Who can do this sort of thing and yeah, it's just it's one of those ones that's like would be incredible without where it goes.
Lee So.
Lee Now, I think the Cecil Hotel one might then be the counter to it because again, not to give you any spoilers, you know how that one ended up.
Lee Um.
Lee But yeah, it's all these people doing this amazing sleuthing and then they'll go, oh, that was what happened.
Lee Forget me saying anything really.
Adam In a weird way, it's yeah, it's the opposite because I know what you mean with the Elisa Lam cases, that became such a um, you know, just an enduring mystery again because within a few years, it wasn't like, you know, legends that were built up over time or something like that.
Adam This was something where there was video footage and things like that.
Adam But still, yeah, at the end of it you just yeah.
Lee You know what I'm saying, once they start like the little things they start finding and the amount of people who go there and recreate it so they can see it for themselves and spot things.
Lee Like it is it's amazing that people are that kind of obsessed over it and so much of it happened in the 19 days before a body was discovered.
Lee Like.
Lee Um.
Lee But yeah, I mean it's it is fascinating and it does go to show you.
Lee As you say, what mob mentality can do really for for good and bad.
Lee But uh yeah, you have to.
Lee You have to see.
Adam Oh, definitely.
Lee See yourself to sort of.
Lee Um.
Lee But yes, but enough of that miserable real life stuff.
Lee Let's talk about something that couldn't be further from the truth.
Chris Oh.
Adam Hmm.
Lee Um.
Lee Yes.
Lee Oh, but I mean.
Lee A bit like uh don't fuck with cats, let's be honest, Jeff Goldblum clearly fucking hates monkeys.
Lee Um.
Adam Oh.
Adam Actually, I couldn't I couldn't get it to work.
Adam I couldn't get my Blu-ray to work, but there is a.
Adam Apparently there's an outtake called famously called pig cat.
Lee Oh.
Adam And basically.
Adam At some point, um Seth Brundle, yeah, fuses a pig and a cat and you get pig cat.
Adam And.
Adam Oh.
Lee What's wrong with mice?
Lee They're little.
Lee They're cheap.
Lee Why would you stick a bloody great baboon in there, you crazy fool.
Adam Well, not only that, I'll tell you what, right, we're getting we're getting into this right now.
Adam Because.
Adam The baboon.
Adam Is an actor called Typhoon.
Lee Oh.
Adam So.
Adam He is.
Chris The baboon.
Adam Yeah.
Adam I.
Adam The thing was, I was watching it and I got really into, as I was describing him, the baboon.
Adam And.
Adam I love the I love the bit when uh Jeffrey Goldblum's talking to him and he's just sitting there like, I don't know mate, I'm a baboon.
Adam You know.
Adam Although he does although that baboon does seem to say it does seem to have the look of your mate who's equally as wasted as you.
Adam Going, I don't reckon that's a good idea.
Adam But not actually caring or having the ability to actually get up and stop you.
Adam He just looked at him really sort of like this.
Adam Right, that's it, I'm I'm going to go through, I'm going to go through.
Adam She's not here.
Adam I'm going to go through.
Adam And the monkey does look at him like, I don't think you should, man.
Adam No.
Adam Nah.
Adam Nah.
Adam Anyway.
Adam So I got obsessed with the baboon.
Adam The baboon is in four other movies.
Chris Oh.
Lee Wow.
Adam All three of those movies.
Adam Are on a list of the worst movies of all time.
Adam And I messaged.
Chris That is.
Chris That is impressive.
Adam Yeah.
Adam I messaged Bobby before we came on, I haven't him, but um, because I wanted to ask him if he'd seen two of these movies.
Adam In fact, all three of them sound so not for everyone.
Adam That if they don't know them, I want them to cover them because I'm not going to watch them.
Adam But I feel they would.
Adam And yeah, so he's in a film called uh Shakt.
Adam Ma.
Adam uh from 1990 in which an experimental baboon goes mental in a lab facility and starts killing everyone with Roddy McDowall.
Lee Yes, that goes on the watch list.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And he's also he plays the character Bo, which is again, please, because I've been referring to him as the baboon.
Adam Uh he plays the character called Bo in two films about Super Spy Duncan Jack and Bo is his baboon sidekick.
Adam And.
Adam They make two films of this Unmasking the Idol in which uh they have to stop the terrorist.
Adam Scarlett leader from starting World War III.
Adam And the follow-up, The Order of the Black Eagle in which they have to fight Nazis hiding in South America.
Lee And he's made.
Lee Bo.
Adam And so it sounds like it's like some crazy fucked up like Indiana Jones James Bond Super spy thing.
Lee He's made.
Adam It.
Adam It's really.
Adam It sounds so canon, isn't it?
Adam It really does.
Adam And like I say, I messaged Bobby because I wanted to see if he was aware of these films because if not, and and here's the clincher, that first um movie, I'm asking the idol.
Adam Is 1986.
Adam And I know that that is their touchstone year.
Lee Oh, yeah.
Adam So yeah, if you're if you're listening gents.
Adam Let us know if you've seen them.
Adam And if you haven't or you have, please do episodes on them because frankly, they start.
Adam One of the finest baboon actors and I think it's unfair to let him swelter in the doldrums of four films, three of which are on the worst films of all time list.
Adam So.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And that.
Lee Oh.
Adam And sorry, I did get excited there, but yeah.
Adam We we started with baboons, we started with baboons.
Lee Sorry.
Lee That's my fault, I dragged baboons in.
Chris That's a unique start.
Adam It's a unique start.
Adam But that's how good this that's how good I feel about this film.
Adam That we can start at the baboon facts and just go higher.
Lee Yeah.
Lee I agree.
Lee I do agree.
Adam We haven't we haven't peaked.
Lee No.
Lee Chris, so I'm assuming this wasn't your first viewing of this film.
Chris Well, no.
Chris So it wasn't my first year, and I've definitely seen it before.
Chris Um, but it was also one of those things where it had been talked about a lot in school because of the ear dropping off scene.
Chris Right, I don't know, I mean there's a lot that happens in this film.
Chris That could have been talked about for some reason that was the one.
Adam I.
Adam I.
Adam I was going to say.
Adam The the key moments because I was watching it with Clare and the key moments I kept going, that was all around the playground.
Lee Yeah.
Adam And it was and it was maggot birth.
Adam The ear coming off.
Chris Yeah, yeah.
Adam Seeing his knob in the bathroom cabinet.
Adam And yeah, and I think I think the vomit as well, possibly.
Adam But yeah.
Adam Definitely the ear coming off was yeah, that went around the playground.
Chris Now, I'm sure those other bits did get talked about, I did not remember them all in the cabinet.
Chris But yeah, um but for some reason the ear is what stuck in my mind over the years.
Chris So it's like that's what I think of when I think of this film and so yeah.
Chris So to to be reminded of everything else that happens in it, it's just like it it it just for me it started off and it's like yeah, yeah, this is good.
Chris Okay.
Chris I really like Jeff Goldblum.
Chris Um I'd forgotten Gina Davis was in it.
Chris And I remember.
Chris I quite liked her at the time, I thought she did a good job in this, um but yeah.
Chris Just I I love who Jeff Goldblum plays and his progression throughout and the way that he changes and it's just it just kept getting better.
Chris Every new scene was like, right, he's just made the previous scenes amazing and that's just got better and better and better.
Chris And it and just it took me through such a roller coaster and I totally forgotten that the sort of depth.
Chris The depth that it builds, um and so yeah.
Chris A couple of the uh things that I took away.
Chris Um, I'll definitely need to use the phrase, I'm going to waxnic at some point.
Lee Oh.
Chris I've never heard that before.
Chris Um, be afraid, be very afraid.
Chris That's obviously a classic.
Chris Um.
Chris phrase.
Chris And and yeah, and then the bit where he said when his he's turned mostly and his mind has changed.
Chris And he said, I'm an insect who dreamt he was a man, I'll hurt you if you say and I was like, that's it.
Chris They've just won.
Chris Like we've seen some great films lately.
Chris That's done it for me.
Adam Well, because that's.
Adam That's the there's a.
Adam What is it, the um, Zang Z dreams of a butterfly.
Adam It's like an old Chinese proverb.
Lee Yeah, funnily enough, going back to Lee's.
Adam Yeah.
Lee Proverb, that was the word I couldn't think of at the time.
Lee And I was like, oh, saying, no, they're not saying and in the end I was like, ah, just.
Lee But yeah.
Adam Well done.
Adam Thank you.
Adam I transcribed the whole thing because I thought Chris might pick up on it.
Adam And it's um and this I remember I remember getting read this at school like in primary school.
Adam And I'm like, shit, I had a fucking impressive teacher at that point.
Adam But um.
Adam Yeah, it was uh once once Zo dreamed he was a butterfly.
Adam Flitting and fluttering about happy with himself.
Adam And doing as he pleased.
Adam He didn't know he was Xango.
Adam Suddenly he woke up and there he was solid and unmistakable Xango, but he didn't know if he was Xango who had dreamt he was a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming that he was Xango.
Adam Between Xango and the butterfly, there must be some distinction.
Adam This is called the transformation of things.
Lee And.
Adam Yeah.
Adam And it was just the transformation of things.
Adam Bit that was like, right, well, I can see why that's that's got into the thing.
Adam Pa.
Adam Like.
Adam The obvious that.
Adam The other the other thing though, you um, be afraid, be very afraid.
Adam Um, that line.
Adam It came from the producer.
Adam Or one of the producers.
Adam Which was Mel Brooks.
Lee What?
Adam Yeah.
Adam He because they said, oh, because they were I think basically they were reading the the proposed script to him and everything.
Adam And it was and he was like.
Adam So um, she goes back and she's fried.
Adam She's afraid.
Adam He's like, yeah.
Adam Be afraid.
Adam Be very afraid.
Adam He really and then they were like, yeah, that's the line we want.
Adam And then it's started with the poster and everything.
Adam But yeah, Mel Brooks.
Adam This is around the same sort of time because he obviously did like stuff like The Elephant Man and things like that.
Adam And he does sort of crop up.
Adam He has far more contributions to horror than just uh Young Frankenstein and oddly enough not necessarily, you know.
Adam Certainly not horror comedies.
Adam I mean this is if you want one thing, you can't level at The Fly, it's not, you know, not that run around.
Lee But.
Lee It does.
Chris It does.
Chris It has.
Adam It does have.
Adam Some lighter parts as well.
Adam Like so, you know, I totally forgot.
Adam That as as he's changing and he's so pleased with himself and and he's, you know, becoming excited about it.
Adam And he's like this is something great and then he's getting stronger and and he's sort of feeling like he's, you know, peaking.
Adam It's just.
Adam Yeah, I I sort of forgotten.
Adam Right.
Adam Yeah, so much of all of that.
Adam But I.
Adam I think overall.
Adam Um because that that was the other thing.
Adam As well is I don't know if anyone's seen it, obviously, um, David Cronenberg has a bit of a.
Adam a double life as an actor.
Adam And he is he plays Dekin Nightbreed.
Lee Oh, yeah.
Adam Which is.
Adam Fucking brilliant.
Adam He really.
Adam You know.
Adam He really but again, he tends to play characters who feel.
Adam a bit David Cronenberg is the best way I can put it, you know, they're always always like.
Adam Yeah, intellectual but to the point that it's like, yeah, you don't have any morals left, do you?
Adam It.
Adam So.
Adam Um, but obviously there's he's in Jason X.
Lee Yeah.
Adam Um, but apparently, and I've not I don't know if you've if neither of you are possibly Chris.
Adam Have watched Star Trek Discovery, but apparently he's got a recurring role in that.
Lee Oh.
Adam Character called Kovitch.
Adam And there is and literally he is.
Adam I saw a picture of it, it's Space Dave Cronenberg.
Adam It's Dave Cronenberg with his big white hair.
Adam And his massive black glasses uh but in a silver suit.
Adam So.
Lee You know.
Adam But um.
Adam But yeah, that's what I.
Adam I think.
Adam Overall.
Adam Um, because that that was the other thing.
Adam As well is I don't know if anyone's seen it, obviously, um, David Cronenberg has a bit of a uh a double life as an actor and he is he plays Dekin Nightbreed.
