0:45ChrisOh, I have. This week I watched the perfect film.

0:48ChrisI've watched the remake of Suspiria.

0:52UnknownIt left me with some good dreams the end.

0:54ChrisSo I'm assuming from what you both just said, neither of you have seen it or know much about it.

1:01ChrisAside from that it's based on the same story.

1:03AdamI literally started watching it one night.

1:07AdamGot about 10 minutes in.

1:09AdamAnd then I was like, how long is this?

1:11AdamAnd then realized it was two hours and this was like two in the morning. I was like, yeah, that ain't fucking happening.

1:18ChrisIt's it's two, well, yeah, two hours.

1:20ChrisI must admit it felt like a bit longer.

1:22ChrisAnd it wasn't because it was bad because it was bad.

1:24ChrisBut it was because I spread it out over it was two or three days.

1:28ChrisBut it is quite a lot of there's a lot of dance in it.

1:33ChrisA bit like Black Swan.

1:35UnknownBecause that's what I missed from this is there's not much dance.

1:37ChrisWell, yeah.

1:38ChrisSo so it was very interesting to watch this afterwards and say so I got to say I really did like the remake.

1:45ChrisIt I I don't know, should I say too much now about them both?

1:49UnknownNo, I reckon save it until once we've talked about the original and then add your.

1:53ChrisSo I got to say um there's it kicks off massively at the end.

1:59ChrisLike I was not expecting quite the level that it went to.

2:03ChrisUm and and it left me feeling a bit that's not quite what I wanted to happen.

2:08ChrisAnd then the very end for me wrapped it up better.

2:12ChrisAnd I felt satisfied.

2:15ChrisSo you've got to kind of hold on till till then.

2:18ChrisI mean, you know, you might disagree, you might say you prefer the the bit where it goes crazy.

2:47ChrisIt's it yeah, I was quite happy watching it.

2:50ChrisBut it's not it's not the most exciting you could say.

2:55ChrisBut I just it just played nicely.

3:00ChrisUm you know, I enjoyed the music, I enjoyed the atmosphere, I liked the characters.

3:07ChrisBut it was it could be condensed.

3:14ChrisI you definitely do have to hold on till the end or just watch the last half an hour.

4:04ChrisUm and yeah, I thought what he did mostly fit well.

4:08ChrisUm sometimes it's slightly jarring. I don't know if I would have always had the singing at every point that it was chosen to be.

4:17ChrisObviously he's a very good singer, but for me sometimes I prefer to have an instrumental.

4:24UnknownThe original and obviously don't want to say too much yet, but it's jarring in the original.

4:33UnknownThey are the audio equivalent of Requiem for a dream.

4:40ChrisI just I just about sort of missed them in I don't know why.

4:44ChrisLike everybody seemed to be listening to them and I think at that point.

4:47ChrisI was just too much into Thrash metal and they were just.

4:50ChrisWeren't quite.

4:54ChrisThey were just a little bit too popular and a bit too nice in parts.

4:59ChrisSo I just didn't quite.

5:02AdamI think the key point was is that our good friend Dave Mann did say, I don't know why people reckon they're the most depressing band in the world.

5:09AdamThey don't even sing about death and cults and that.

5:14AdamSo while you were listening to fresh metal it probably wasn't what you were after.

5:22ChrisBut but yeah, so yeah, you did a good job.

5:25ChrisUm so overall, I thought the production was fantastic in in the remake.

5:30UnknownUh yeah.

5:31AdamI really like that. I do like, I will say that definitely.

5:34ChrisYeah.

5:35ChrisUm and it turned out as well, the uh the main character from the original 1977.

5:43ChrisJess, no, not Jess, yeah, Jessica Harper.

5:48ChrisWho played Suzy is in the remake as somebody else, not as Suzy.

5:53AdamYeah, I heard she had a cameo in it.

5:55ChrisSo so that's quite nice.

5:57AdamAnd Tilda Swinton's just fucking brilliant anyway, so.

6:09AdamThe one thing I can count apart from me and Claire have been rewatching uh Dr. Terrible's house of horrible.

6:20AdamUm and uh yeah, so we've just been rewatching.

6:22AdamEspecially because now Claire's been watching horror films, she gets a lot more of the stuff.

6:29AdamPlus Claire was really into has really got into the anthology format.

6:35AdamSo obviously the first one that's on the disc is the is the one where they do an anthology.

6:40UnknownYeah.

6:41AdamSort of episode, there's three different stories and it's, yeah, just spot on.

6:45AdamUm and yeah.

6:46AdamAlways always highly recommended to any of our listeners, I would say.

6:51UnknownI think that is a yearly rewatch for me, that entire series.

6:54AdamPretty much to be honest. Yeah.

6:57AdamUh the only other thing I've watched is and this is a bit of a stretch.

7:01AdamDo you remember Dramarama?

7:04AdamThe children is children's ITV had like a drama strand.

7:09AdamAnd it kind of often and the opening title used to go.

7:16UnknownYeah.

7:17AdamUm yeah, and um yeah, I was reading about an episode and apparently basically loads from her up on YouTube.

7:25AdamAnd um yeah, I watched something called the snap.

7:30AdamAnd it's only 20 minutes long.

7:32AdamIt's really it's basically like someone thought, what we really need to do is make whistling and I'll come to you.

7:41AdamUh for kids.

7:42UnknownYeah.

7:43AdamAnd it's like, why did you think that?

7:46UnknownYeah.

7:48UnknownThey didn't like it much.

7:50AdamYeah, it definitely it definitely comes from a stage where it was like, you know, they're not I don't think it's even, I don't think it was even like a deliberate choice, but it was basically just like, yeah, like ghosts and death and murder and stuff like that.

8:04AdamAnd kids do love that.

8:05AdamBut apparently these days know they shouldn't see it.

8:09AdamBut this was yeah.

8:17AdamIn a weird way, it reminded me a lot of um it reminded me a bit of Possum.

8:59UnknownI've started rewatching the X-Files, the original series from the beginning.

9:27UnknownThat's what made me I was like, I've seen six seasons at 24 episodes a season.

9:32UnknownNo wonder it felt like such a long journey to get there, it's hundreds of hours.

9:35AdamBy the way, it's not six series, it's nine.

9:47AdamNine series, two movies that you do have to watch because they're part of the overarching plot and then the comeback that they did a couple of years ago where they did two series.

9:58ChrisDidn't didn't you say that they drop off a bit in the later series?

10:05AdamI think it just it's it's basically it's like you get to the point in the X-Files where it's like a Lisa episode in the Simpsons.

10:16AdamWhere you're like, oh, are we doing are we doing the big plot arc? Oh, that's a bit of a sh.

10:21AdamSo you know, you're going to be bored for 50 minutes.

10:24AdamWhereas what you really what you really wanted was just here's a thing.

10:31AdamHe don't he believes it, she don't, she sees it, but there you go, no proof, but it's brilliant.

10:38AdamYou just want big foot and vampire episodes.

10:40AdamIt should be they should have kept it exactly like Colcheck.

10:45AdamOf just no sort of I mean, yeah, build up actually, no, that's the point, build up an arc, but plan it.

10:53AdamCuz it definitely was made up as they went along and got needlessly fucking complicated.

10:59UnknownUh but yeah, I've got to say 15 episodes in.

11:02UnknownAnd um yeah, it it's holding up really.

11:04UnknownI thought it might I thought I might struggle more with the earlier ones.

11:10UnknownI thought it might be one of those, the first series might be a bit ropey.

11:13UnknownAnd then it picks up in three and four and then it drops back down again.

11:16UnknownBut actually, yeah, I I think there's been like one duff episode in 15 so far.

11:21UnknownYeah, even the first one wasn't stuff.

11:22AdamSo they really hit the ground running.

11:26AdamAnd like those first I think it's the first three series are probably at its prime.

11:33UnknownOkay, so now we're all caught up, let's discuss this evening's main feature.

11:38UnknownSo what did you think of it, Chris? watching it for the first time?

11:41ChrisYeah, well, it was really interesting.

11:43ChrisWatching it um after watching the remake.

11:47ChrisAnd I'd say good out.

11:48UnknownIt was good.

11:50ChrisWell.

11:50ChrisPossibly I don't know it kind of I think it did help in a way.

11:54ChrisLike um so so I sort of liked that.

11:56ChrisI knew the story a bit and I was interested to see how they did it originally.

12:03ChrisUm and the way they shot this, the way it looks, the the colors are amazing and the contrast between the darkness of the film and the style is quite unusual.

12:12ChrisI was trying to think of something else that was quite this extreme.

12:17ChrisUm but I was thinking at a few points that I possibly would have preferred it if it had if it was.

12:23ChrisA bit more comedy cuz it's obviously not at all.

12:26ChrisBut with that style, I think I'm used to it being when you're watching something that looks like that.

12:31ChrisIt is more of a comedy.

12:33ChrisSo that could just be where um, you know, I'm filtering it just because of what I'm used to seeing.

12:40ChrisBut I can imagine again seeing this in 1977, I think it was, you know, quite unusual, I would have thought.

12:48ChrisUm I loved the the actress playing Suzy, Jessica Harper.

12:55AdamYeah.

12:55ChrisUm yeah, I I really liked her throughout.

13:21UnknownIt's funny, Jennifer obviously remembered it cuz we're watching it and then she suddenly said, it's funny.

13:26UnknownI keep expecting her to burst into song and it'd be really inappropriate.

13:30UnknownAnd then I realized totally different film.

13:32AdamHmm.

13:34UnknownI was like, she's going to sing in a minute. I don't think that's right.

13:38ChrisOh, no.

13:38UnknownYeah.

13:39ChrisYeah.

13:40AdamShe that's that's why she got offered the part as well because of Phantom of the Paradise.

13:46AdamSo.

13:47ChrisOh, that's great.

13:48ChrisYeah.

13:49ChrisUm yeah, no, so so I did it it was uh very impressive.

13:54ChrisUm and yeah, I guess it it doesn't go quite as extreme.

14:01ChrisI mean, there's a few scenes that are quite.

14:04ChrisUm quite grim in this and the overall idea of it is still very dark.

14:09ChrisUm although lightened it more in this than in the remake because of the the color palette.

14:15AdamYeah.

14:16ChrisUm.

14:17ChrisBut yeah, it's uh I suppose.

14:20ChrisAnd then on the flip side was that having seen the remake.

14:23ChrisAnd that is more in the style of what I'm used to, then overall I liked the story told in that way.

14:30UnknownI'm sure I've heard the theme tune before.

14:34AdamYou spent time near me so you probably.

14:36ChrisYeah, that's what I was thinking.

14:38ChrisUm.

14:39ChrisBut yeah, so that's that's fantastic.

14:41ChrisBut again, it's it's very powerful and I think that added to the idea that that you're watching an experience.

14:46ChrisMore than the unfolding story.

14:48UnknownOh, yeah.

14:48AdamIt's not realistic in that sense, which a lot which is in common with a lot of the Italian stuff.

14:52ChrisOkay. It's it's a lot more expressionistic.

14:56AdamSo it's like overtly stylized.

14:58AdamThat it's kind of like, this is a movie, this is your experience of this movie.

15:05ChrisYeah.

15:05ChrisAnd especially when they did some things like when she was drinking the wine in bed and it was like your point of view as if you're drinking the wine and you know, bits like that sort of made me think even more that they're trying to have that effect and and a lot of closeups on things and and so on.

15:17ChrisSo it's like it was, you know, it's a great thing to watch, but just different.

15:23ChrisAnd I think that's a slightly different mindset to get into or expectation.

15:30AdamA lot a lot of it comes from I think Dario Argento's quite into was very heavily influenced by Alfred Hitchcock.

15:37ChrisHmm, okay.

15:38AdamBut it's more the it's more the sort of flary side of Hitchcock.

15:44AdamWhereas yeah, cuz I think maybe maybe a good thing that the fact that you've watched, you watched the remake before this.

15:51AdamIs the one thing is that it probably makes the plot it it feels in the gaps that they really don't bother putting in in the 77 one.

15:59AdamThere are certain moments where you're like, hey, what? Okay.

16:06AdamSo.

16:07ChrisYeah, that definitely makes sense.

16:09AdamYeah.

16:09ChrisYeah.

16:10ChrisThat makes sense.

16:10ChrisUm but you know, there's some great dialogue throughout um I liked you know, when when she was talking and trying to unravel the mystery as it goes.

16:18ChrisAnd um when she's speaking to the is it psychiatrist?

16:22ChrisUm so.

16:23AdamOh, yes, yeah.

16:24ChrisYeah later on and yeah, you know, it's it's some definitely great scenes and great bits in it.

16:29UnknownI meant to look that up on IMDB and I didn't that psychiatrist, that's a very young Udo Kier, isn't it?

16:33AdamYeah.

16:34AdamA very young Udo Kier but when you when you could see why he was a leading man rather than nowadays where he looks a bit more like George Galloway, so you can't but he is you know, he's a very swimsome looking Udo Kier in that.

16:45AdamAnd actually the guy that he brings over to her.

16:47AdamThe the other doctor.

16:49AdamUm he's the butler from the Exorcist.

16:52ChrisHmm.

16:54AdamI can't what is his name.

16:56AdamIt's like it's like just a single it's a single man Carl.

17:06AdamBut um also, I mean that's one thing because they knew it was going to be a an English dub of this.

17:18AdamUm a lot of people are speaking in their own language and then dubbed later.

17:25AdamUm and apparently yeah, that when they were filming that, the the guy playing the professor would just nudge her with his foot when he'd finished speaking.

17:36AdamCuz she genuinely did not have a fucking clue.

17:38AdamWhat he was saying.

17:40AdamBecause he was reading in German.

17:41AdamSo, you know, he said.

17:44AdamAnd which is um yeah, there's a lot of that sort of weirdness that goes in.

17:50ChrisWell, one thing that I liked in the remake is that they have kind of subplots with um and a guy.

17:55ChrisWho looked a bit like that professor and and it was just yeah.

17:59ChrisIt was a nice story added to it that at the end um is more meaningful.

18:04ChrisSo I guess yeah, it just had sort of extra layers perhaps that.

18:07UnknownI think that's it the original finishes and you do feel a bit like, well what's happening next?

18:13UnknownLike you don't really get any wrap around or finishing story to it, do you?

18:18UnknownIt does feel very stark throughout, as you say, almost like separate bits and it finishes and you're left with a little bit like.

18:24ChrisYeah.

18:24ChrisYou could almost watch them as shorts it felt like.

18:27UnknownYeah.

18:28AdamAnd and also and also just the weird sort of way that at the end of it she walks away but in a sort of like, sounds crazy witches, smile on her face.

18:39AdamRather than Jesus Christ.

18:41AdamI'll go out that one.

18:44ChrisI thought it was a bit harsh that they killed the the butler in this.

18:47ChrisCuz I didn't he hadn't done anything wrong.

18:50AdamHe was part of the cult.

18:52AdamHe had the lighter, he had Sarah's lighter.

18:56AdamThat after they'd killed her off in the barb wire cellar.

19:24UnknownI see now that did make me laugh cuz there's the the one of the lines, yeah, where you see him is, oh, this is so and so.

19:37UnknownAnd I was like, this is an Argento film, he literally looks like someone's drawing a face on a testicle, that man.

19:46UnknownCuz I only know Dario Argento of course from playing the game golf with Adam.

19:55AdamI I was recounting I was recounting that to um Claire when I got when I was accused of cheating because it was, how would you know that?

20:05AdamAnd it was the it was how does the blind pianist Daniel die in Suspiria?

20:13AdamHe gets he gets savaged by his own guide dog.

20:17AdamAnd I remember I remember that I think that was your breaking point Jennifer for some reason that day because you were just like, oh.

20:23UnknownCome on, how could you be bloody Dario again?

20:28UnknownYeah, well, at least I learned who he was.

20:32UnknownOh, there he is.

20:33ChrisNow you know what he looks like.

20:34UnknownI mean, his head is shaped like a testicle and his face is just a very small portion in the center of it.

20:41AdamI love Dario Argento. I just like to put that out, but uh, yes, description is pretty fairly.

20:50AdamBut I mean, and so but he was part of a this is his first supernatural uh film.

20:58UnknownHmm.

20:58AdamBecause prior to this, it's a lot of basically he did a lot of what's called uh giallo, which is which is literally is yellow.

21:10AdamAnd what it and it's basically like crime dramas but with a sort of slasher film sort of edge to them.

21:18AdamIt's always like an unknown killer in black leather gloves, stabbing people in POV shots and stuff like that.

21:26AdamUm and they're also quite sort of like almost like a where it's like, you know.

21:32AdamThe police will be trying to solve it, but unlike a police procedure where it's like, we've found um, you know, we found blood and we tested it and it matched him, etc, etc.

21:44AdamNo, it's always things like, well, we've just realized that his mom, she used to own an elephant farm.

21:52UnknownOh.

21:53AdamThat's why he's doing it.

21:54AdamAnd you're like, that is a leap.

21:58UnknownWell.

21:58UnknownI mean, I did like one of my favorite, that isn't one of them, but it is kind of.

22:04UnknownOne of my favorite quotes was uh when the head mistress is saying about the police and she said, yes, I I spoke to them earlier and they said they had some definite clues.

22:15UnknownAnd that was it.

22:16UnknownJust some definite clues and I'm going to move on now and don't ask any more questions because they had some definite clues.

22:22UnknownAnd yeah, I'm used to crime dramas, I was expecting they've got some forensic evidence and you know, they found this out.

22:29UnknownNo, no.

22:30AdamI don't I genuinely I don't think there's even a a policeman listed in the credits.

22:36UnknownNo.

22:36AdamI think you only hear that people have called them.

22:40UnknownThat's it.

22:41UnknownYeah.

22:43AdamUm but yeah, so so he he would do all he did these type films and the and so yeah, he did um the big one was Deep Red or Profundo Russo.

22:54UnknownOh, I heard that from Goth.

22:56AdamYes, exactly.

22:58UnknownOh, right.

22:58AdamAnd he did the Bird with the Crystal Plumage and the Cat O'Nine Tails.

23:03AdamAnd Four Flies on Grey Velvet.

23:07AdamBut they're not they're not great.

23:12AdamThey're pretty.

23:13AdamThey're pretty good, but they're not, I don't think they work.

25:18AdamAnd but this was um she also wrote some horror films, but this was the only one, I think this is the only one she got a credit for.
