0:45 Chris Oh, I have. This week I watched the perfect film.

0:48 Chris I've watched the remake of Suspiria.

0:52 Unknown It left me with some good dreams the end.

0:54 Chris So I'm assuming from what you both just said, neither of you have seen it or know much about it.

1:01 Chris Aside from that it's based on the same story.

1:03 Adam I literally started watching it one night.

1:07 Adam Got about 10 minutes in.

1:09 Adam And then I was like, how long is this?

1:11 Adam And then realized it was two hours and this was like two in the morning. I was like, yeah, that ain't fucking happening.

1:18 Chris It's it's two, well, yeah, two hours.

1:20 Chris I must admit it felt like a bit longer.

1:22 Chris And it wasn't because it was bad because it was bad.

1:24 Chris But it was because I spread it out over it was two or three days.

1:28 Chris But it is quite a lot of there's a lot of dance in it.

1:33 Chris A bit like Black Swan.

1:35 Unknown Because that's what I missed from this is there's not much dance.

1:37 Chris Well, yeah.

1:38 Chris So so it was very interesting to watch this afterwards and say so I got to say I really did like the remake.

1:45 Chris It I I don't know, should I say too much now about them both?

1:49 Unknown No, I reckon save it until once we've talked about the original and then add your.

1:53 Chris So I got to say um there's it kicks off massively at the end.

1:59 Chris Like I was not expecting quite the level that it went to.

2:03 Chris Um and and it left me feeling a bit that's not quite what I wanted to happen.

2:08 Chris And then the very end for me wrapped it up better.

2:12 Chris And I felt satisfied.

2:15 Chris So you've got to kind of hold on till till then.

2:18 Chris I mean, you know, you might disagree, you might say you prefer the the bit where it goes crazy.

2:47 Chris It's it yeah, I was quite happy watching it.

3:00 Chris Um you know, I enjoyed the music, I enjoyed the atmosphere, I liked the characters.

4:04 Chris Um and yeah, I thought what he did mostly fit well.

4:08 Chris Um sometimes it's slightly jarring. I don't know if I would have always had the singing at every point that it was chosen to be.

4:17 Chris Obviously he's a very good singer, but for me sometimes I prefer to have an instrumental.

4:24 Unknown The original and obviously don't want to say too much yet, but it's jarring in the original.

4:28 Chris Yeah.

4:30 Unknown Chris. Yeah.

4:30 Unknown Not being a fan of Radiohead, Chris.

4:33 Unknown They are the audio equivalent of Requiem for a dream.

4:36 Unknown So you should be fucking all over that.

4:38 Chris Well, it's probably true.

4:40 Chris I just I just about sort of missed them in I don't know why.

4:44 Chris Like everybody seemed to be listening to them and I think at that point.

4:47 Chris I was just too much into Thrash metal and they were just.

4:50 Chris Weren't quite.

4:54 Chris They were just a little bit too popular and a bit too nice in parts.

4:59 Chris So I just didn't quite.

5:02 Adam I think the key point was is that our good friend Dave Mann did say, I don't know why people reckon they're the most depressing band in the world.

5:09 Adam They don't even sing about death and cults and that.

5:14 Adam So while you were listening to fresh metal it probably wasn't what you were after.

5:22 Chris But but yeah, so yeah, you did a good job.

5:25 Chris Um so overall, I thought the production was fantastic in in the remake.

5:30 Unknown Uh yeah.

5:31 Adam I really like that. I do like, I will say that definitely.

5:35 Chris Um and it turned out as well, the uh the main character from the original 1977.

5:43 Chris Jess, no, not Jess, yeah, Jessica Harper.

5:48 Chris Who played Suzy is in the remake as somebody else, not as Suzy.

5:53 Adam Yeah, I heard she had a cameo in it.

5:55 Chris So so that's quite nice.

5:57 Adam And Tilda Swinton's just fucking brilliant anyway, so.

6:09 Adam The one thing I can count apart from me and Claire have been rewatching uh Dr. Terrible's house of horrible.

6:17 Adam Because that was truly diabolical.

6:20 Adam Um and uh yeah, so we've just been rewatching.

6:22 Adam Especially because now Claire's been watching horror films, she gets a lot more of the stuff.

6:29 Adam Plus Claire was really into has really got into the anthology format.

6:35 Adam So obviously the first one that's on the disc is the is the one where they do an anthology.

6:40 Unknown Yeah.

6:41 Adam Sort of episode, there's three different stories and it's, yeah, just spot on.

6:45 Adam Um and yeah.

6:46 Adam Always always highly recommended to any of our listeners, I would say.

6:51 Unknown I think that is a yearly rewatch for me, that entire series.

6:54 Adam Pretty much to be honest. Yeah.

6:57 Adam Uh the only other thing I've watched is and this is a bit of a stretch.

7:01 Adam Do you remember Dramarama?

7:04 Adam The children is children's ITV had like a drama strand.

7:09 Adam And it kind of often and the opening title used to go.

7:16 Unknown Yeah.

7:17 Adam Um yeah, and um yeah, I was reading about an episode and apparently basically loads from her up on YouTube.

7:25 Adam And um yeah, I watched something called the snap.

7:30 Adam And it's only 20 minutes long.

7:32 Adam It's really it's basically like someone thought, what we really need to do is make whistling and I'll come to you.

7:41 Adam Uh for kids.

7:42 Unknown Yeah.

7:43 Adam And it's like, why did you think that?

7:46 Unknown Yeah.

7:48 Unknown They didn't like it much.

7:50 Adam Yeah, it definitely it definitely comes from a stage where it was like, you know, they're not I don't think it's even, I don't think it was even like a deliberate choice, but it was basically just like, yeah, like ghosts and death and murder and stuff like that.

8:04 Adam And kids do love that.

8:05 Adam But apparently these days know they shouldn't see it.

8:09 Adam But this was yeah.

8:17 Adam In a weird way, it reminded me a lot of um it reminded me a bit of Possum.

8:59 Unknown I've started rewatching the X-Files, the original series from the beginning.

9:07 Unknown I'm not saying it's been a slow two days, but I'm 15 episodes in.

9:16 Adam So you're well into the second, you're sort of right into the start of the second series then must be.

9:25 Unknown I'm halfway through series one.

9:27 Unknown That's what made me I was like, I've seen six seasons at 24 episodes a season.

9:32 Unknown No wonder it felt like such a long journey to get there, it's hundreds of hours.

9:35 Adam By the way, it's not six series, it's nine.

9:40 Chris But but I didn't didn't you say cuz you said recently?

9:46 Adam I was going to say.

9:47 Adam Nine series, two movies that you do have to watch because they're part of the overarching plot and then the comeback that they did a couple of years ago where they did two series.

9:58 Chris Didn't didn't you say that they drop off a bit in the later series?

10:05 Adam I think it just it's it's basically it's like you get to the point in the X-Files where it's like a Lisa episode in the Simpsons.

10:16 Adam Where you're like, oh, are we doing are we doing the big plot arc? Oh, that's a bit of a sh.

10:21 Adam So you know, you're going to be bored for 50 minutes.

10:24 Adam Whereas what you really what you really wanted was just here's a thing.

10:31 Adam He don't he believes it, she don't, she sees it, but there you go, no proof, but it's brilliant.

10:38 Adam You just want big foot and vampire episodes.

10:40 Adam It should be they should have kept it exactly like Colcheck.

10:45 Adam Of just no sort of I mean, yeah, build up actually, no, that's the point, build up an arc, but plan it.

10:53 Adam Cuz it definitely was made up as they went along and got needlessly fucking complicated.

10:59 Unknown Uh but yeah, I've got to say 15 episodes in.

11:02 Unknown And um yeah, it it's holding up really.

11:04 Unknown I thought it might I thought I might struggle more with the earlier ones.

11:10 Unknown I thought it might be one of those, the first series might be a bit ropey.

11:13 Unknown And then it picks up in three and four and then it drops back down again.

11:16 Unknown But actually, yeah, I I think there's been like one duff episode in 15 so far.

11:21 Unknown Yeah, even the first one wasn't stuff.

11:22 Adam So they really hit the ground running.

11:26 Adam And like those first I think it's the first three series are probably at its prime.

11:33 Unknown Okay, so now we're all caught up, let's discuss this evening's main feature.

11:38 Unknown So what did you think of it, Chris? watching it for the first time?

11:41 Chris Yeah, well, it was really interesting.

11:43 Chris Watching it um after watching the remake.

11:47 Chris And I'd say good out.

11:48 Unknown It was good.

11:50 Chris Well.

11:50 Chris Possibly I don't know it kind of I think it did help in a way.

11:54 Chris Like um so so I sort of liked that.

11:56 Chris I knew the story a bit and I was interested to see how they did it originally.

12:03 Chris Um and the way they shot this, the way it looks, the the colors are amazing and the contrast between the darkness of the film and the style is quite unusual.

12:12 Chris I was trying to think of something else that was quite this extreme.

12:17 Chris Um but I was thinking at a few points that I possibly would have preferred it if it had if it was.

12:23 Chris A bit more comedy cuz it's obviously not at all.

12:26 Chris But with that style, I think I'm used to it being when you're watching something that looks like that.

12:31 Chris It is more of a comedy.

12:33 Chris So that could just be where um, you know, I'm filtering it just because of what I'm used to seeing.

12:40 Chris But I can imagine again seeing this in 1977, I think it was, you know, quite unusual, I would have thought.

12:48 Chris Um I loved the the actress playing Suzy, Jessica Harper.

12:55 Adam Yeah.

12:55 Chris Um yeah, I I really liked her throughout.

12:58 Unknown Do you recognize her from a previous film we've watched?

13:21 Unknown It's funny, Jennifer obviously remembered it cuz we're watching it and then she suddenly said, it's funny.

13:26 Unknown I keep expecting her to burst into song and it'd be really inappropriate.

13:30 Unknown And then I realized totally different film.

13:32 Adam Hmm.

13:34 Unknown I was like, she's going to sing in a minute. I don't think that's right.

13:38 Chris Oh, no.

13:38 Unknown Yeah.

13:39 Chris Yeah.

13:40 Adam She that's that's why she got offered the part as well because of Phantom of the Paradise.

13:46 Adam So.

13:47 Chris Oh, that's great.

13:48 Chris Yeah.

13:49 Chris Um yeah, no, so so I did it it was uh very impressive.

13:54 Chris Um and yeah, I guess it it doesn't go quite as extreme.

14:01 Chris I mean, there's a few scenes that are quite.

14:04 Chris Um quite grim in this and the overall idea of it is still very dark.

14:09 Chris Um although lightened it more in this than in the remake because of the the color palette.

14:15 Adam Yeah.

14:16 Chris Um.

14:17 Chris But yeah, it's uh I suppose.

14:20 Chris And then on the flip side was that having seen the remake.

14:23 Chris And that is more in the style of what I'm used to, then overall I liked the story told in that way.

14:30 Unknown I'm sure I've heard the theme tune before.

14:34 Adam You spent time near me so you probably.

14:36 Chris Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

14:38 Chris Um.

14:39 Chris But yeah, so that's that's fantastic.

14:41 Chris But again, it's it's very powerful and I think that added to the idea that that you're watching an experience.

14:46 Chris More than the unfolding story.

14:48 Unknown Oh, yeah.

14:48 Adam It's not realistic in that sense, which a lot which is in common with a lot of the Italian stuff.

14:52 Chris Okay. It's it's a lot more expressionistic.

14:56 Adam So it's like overtly stylized.

14:58 Adam That it's kind of like, this is a movie, this is your experience of this movie.

15:05 Chris Yeah.

15:05 Chris And especially when they did some things like when she was drinking the wine in bed and it was like your point of view as if you're drinking the wine and you know, bits like that sort of made me think even more that they're trying to have that effect and and a lot of closeups on things and and so on.

15:17 Chris So it's like it was, you know, it's a great thing to watch, but just different.

15:23 Chris And I think that's a slightly different mindset to get into or expectation.

15:30 Adam A lot a lot of it comes from I think Dario Argento's quite into was very heavily influenced by Alfred Hitchcock.

15:37 Chris Hmm, okay.

15:38 Adam But it's more the it's more the sort of flary side of Hitchcock.

15:44 Adam Whereas yeah, cuz I think maybe maybe a good thing that the fact that you've watched, you watched the remake before this.

15:51 Adam Is the one thing is that it probably makes the plot it it feels in the gaps that they really don't bother putting in in the 77 one.

15:59 Adam There are certain moments where you're like, hey, what? Okay.

16:06 Adam So.

16:07 Chris Yeah, that definitely makes sense.

16:09 Adam Yeah.

16:09 Chris Yeah.

16:10 Chris That makes sense.

16:10 Chris Um but you know, there's some great dialogue throughout um I liked you know, when when she was talking and trying to unravel the mystery as it goes.

16:18 Chris And um when she's speaking to the is it psychiatrist?

16:22 Chris Um so.

16:23 Adam Oh, yes, yeah.

16:24 Chris Yeah later on and yeah, you know, it's it's some definitely great scenes and great bits in it.

16:29 Unknown I meant to look that up on IMDB and I didn't that psychiatrist, that's a very young Udo Kier, isn't it?

16:33 Adam Yeah.

16:34 Adam A very young Udo Kier but when you when you could see why he was a leading man rather than nowadays where he looks a bit more like George Galloway, so you can't but he is you know, he's a very swimsome looking Udo Kier in that.

16:45 Adam And actually the guy that he brings over to her.

16:47 Adam The the other doctor.

16:49 Adam Um he's the butler from the Exorcist.

16:52 Chris Hmm.

16:53 Unknown Ah.

16:54 Adam I can't what is his name.

16:56 Adam It's like it's like just a single it's a single man Carl.

17:06 Adam But um also, I mean that's one thing because they knew it was going to be a an English dub of this.

17:18 Adam Um a lot of people are speaking in their own language and then dubbed later.

17:25 Adam Um and apparently yeah, that when they were filming that, the the guy playing the professor would just nudge her with his foot when he'd finished speaking.

17:36 Adam Cuz she genuinely did not have a fucking clue.

17:38 Adam What he was saying.

17:40 Adam Because he was reading in German.

17:41 Adam So, you know, he said.

17:44 Adam And which is um yeah, there's a lot of that sort of weirdness that goes in.

17:50 Chris Well, one thing that I liked in the remake is that they have kind of subplots with um and a guy.

17:55 Chris Who looked a bit like that professor and and it was just yeah.

17:59 Chris It was a nice story added to it that at the end um is more meaningful.

18:04 Chris So I guess yeah, it just had sort of extra layers perhaps that.

18:07 Unknown I think that's it the original finishes and you do feel a bit like, well what's happening next?

18:13 Unknown Like you don't really get any wrap around or finishing story to it, do you?

18:18 Unknown It does feel very stark throughout, as you say, almost like separate bits and it finishes and you're left with a little bit like.

18:24 Chris Yeah.

18:24 Chris You could almost watch them as shorts it felt like.

18:27 Unknown Yeah.

18:28 Adam And and also and also just the weird sort of way that at the end of it she walks away but in a sort of like, sounds crazy witches, smile on her face.

18:39 Adam Rather than Jesus Christ.

18:41 Adam I'll go out that one.

18:43 Unknown Yeah.

18:44 Chris I thought it was a bit harsh that they killed the the butler in this.

18:47 Chris Cuz I didn't he hadn't done anything wrong.

18:49 Chris Did I miss?

18:50 Adam He was part of the cult.

18:51 Unknown Yeah.

18:52 Adam He had the lighter, he had Sarah's lighter.

18:56 Adam That after they'd killed her off in the barb wire cellar.

19:01 Chris But they didn't show him doing anything.

19:05 Adam He was chasing her with a knife.

19:07 Chris Oh okay.

19:08 Unknown He was part of that, wasn't he?

19:12 Adam But I'll be honest and this is terrible is I I for for years I thought that guy was Dario Argento and it's not.

19:19 Adam It's just another guy with a ball cut and an extreme face.

19:24 Unknown I see now that did make me laugh cuz there's the the one of the lines, yeah, where you see him is, oh, this is so and so.

19:32 Unknown He's the handyman around here.

19:33 Unknown Very ugly, isn't he?

19:35 Unknown It's all right.

19:37 Unknown And I was like, this is an Argento film, he literally looks like someone's drawing a face on a testicle, that man.

19:41 Unknown Like for him to have a line like that.

19:43 Unknown I'm gonna have to Google him now.

19:45 Unknown I'm intrigued.

19:46 Unknown Cuz I only know Dario Argento of course from playing the game golf with Adam.

19:50 Unknown Yeah, 50% of the film answers are Dario Argento.

19:53 Unknown Yeah, this was how I learned who he was.

19:55 Adam I I was recounting I was recounting that to um Claire when I got when I was accused of cheating because it was, how would you know that?

20:05 Adam And it was the it was how does the blind pianist Daniel die in Suspiria?

20:13 Adam He gets he gets savaged by his own guide dog.

20:17 Unknown Yeah.

20:17 Adam And I remember I remember that I think that was your breaking point Jennifer for some reason that day because you were just like, oh.

20:23 Unknown Come on, how could you be bloody Dario again?

20:25 Adam Dario.

20:28 Unknown Yeah, well, at least I learned who he was.

20:30 Adam That's true.

20:31 Unknown That's true.

20:32 Unknown Oh, there he is.

20:33 Chris Now you know what he looks like.

20:34 Unknown I mean, his head is shaped like a testicle and his face is just a very small portion in the center of it.

20:41 Adam I love Dario Argento. I just like to put that out, but uh, yes, description is pretty fairly.

20:50 Adam But I mean, and so but he was part of a this is his first supernatural uh film.

20:58 Unknown Hmm.

20:58 Adam Because prior to this, it's a lot of basically he did a lot of what's called uh giallo, which is which is literally is yellow.

21:10 Adam And what it and it's basically like crime dramas but with a sort of slasher film sort of edge to them.

21:18 Adam It's always like an unknown killer in black leather gloves, stabbing people in POV shots and stuff like that.

21:26 Adam Um and they're also quite sort of like almost like a where it's like, you know.

21:32 Adam The police will be trying to solve it, but unlike a police procedure where it's like, we've found um, you know, we found blood and we tested it and it matched him, etc, etc.

21:44 Adam No, it's always things like, well, we've just realized that his mom, she used to own an elephant farm.

21:52 Unknown Oh.

21:53 Adam That's why he's doing it.

21:54 Adam And you're like, that is a leap.

21:58 Unknown Well.

21:58 Unknown I mean, I did like one of my favorite, that isn't one of them, but it is kind of.

22:04 Unknown One of my favorite quotes was uh when the head mistress is saying about the police and she said, yes, I I spoke to them earlier and they said they had some definite clues.

22:15 Unknown And that was it.

22:16 Unknown Just some definite clues and I'm going to move on now and don't ask any more questions because they had some definite clues.

22:22 Unknown And yeah, I'm used to crime dramas, I was expecting they've got some forensic evidence and you know, they found this out.

22:29 Unknown No, no.

22:30 Adam I don't I genuinely I don't think there's even a a policeman listed in the credits.

22:36 Unknown No.

22:36 Adam I think you only hear that people have called them.

22:40 Unknown That's it.

22:41 Unknown Yeah.

22:43 Adam Um but yeah, so so he he would do all he did these type films and the and so yeah, he did um the big one was Deep Red or Profundo Russo.

22:54 Unknown Oh, I heard that from Goth.

25:02 Adam But yeah, she um she appeared in a lot of Dario Argento's films, she's in she's in mother of tears and Opera and Phenomena and Tenebrae and stuff.

25:18 Adam And but this was um she also wrote some horror films, but this was the only one, I think this is the only one she got a credit for.
