AdamWe are now watching, well, we have watched Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones.
AdamSo, uh, yes, before we, you know, head straight into that, I'm going to call it a mixed bag, shall we say.
AdamYeah.
AdamUh gentlemen, uh, has anyone watched anything that's, I don't know, Star Wars adjacent or anything or has any sort of bits to add, Lee?
LeeYes.
AdamHe has.
LeeUm, so in preparation for this, because I was thinking about things that uh, as you say, are Star Wars adjacent and it reminded me of a simpler time.
LeeUm, so I went back in time mentally to 1996, um, so in 1996, I was uh a teenager working at a holiday camp.
LeeUh, the name of which I will not mention.
LeeUm, and I lived there, and I remember one afternoon, we'd all been to the pub.
LeeAnd my friend said, "I've got something incredible to show you all."
AdamIt wasn't that.
UnknownOh yeah.
LeeSo we all went back to his chalet, um, and bearing in mind all I'd seen of computer games at this point was the ZX Spectrum.
LeeUh, I'd seen the Super Nintendo and I'd had like a Master System.
LeeUm, and I went back to his.
ChrisThey were pretty, pretty good systems.
LeeThey are, but he had this new thing called a PlayStation.
ChrisOh.
LeeAnd on that PlayStation, he had Star Wars Rebel Assault 2, and it blew my tiny little mind.
LeeUm, so I, so I spent the next four years wanting this PlayStation and game and never got them.
LeeAnd now, 24 years later, um, I bought it this week on Steam and played Rebel Assault 2 on the PC.
ChrisWas it everything you remembered it to be?
LeeIt was bloody brilliant, I'm not going to lie.
LeeUm.
AdamIt is, yeah.
ChrisNow, is that, is that the video, essentially, it's a video and you have to push at the right time?
LeeNo, it, so it is proper levels and each one is different.
LeeSo the first level you're in a Y-Wing and you've got to shoot down TIE fighters.
LeeI mean, it's pretty.
AdamIt's the one, yeah, it's the one I'm thinking of then, yeah.
LeeAnd it's a mouse and it's just point and click on the X-Wings and they die, like, a lot of it.
LeeLike, like, to be fair, I did it on beginner level, but I played the first seven levels in one sitting in about 45 minutes.
LeeBut I thoroughly enjoyed it.
LeeSo, it's on Steam, it's £7.19 for Rebel Assault 1 and 2.
LeeUh, yeah, if you're into retro gaming, they are super simple.
LeeAnd that's what I like, it's not like the new games where there's 250, like, you know, um, controls to remember.
LeeIt's left click, right click, move the mouse.
LeeIt's that easy.
LeeUm, yeah.
LeeAnd you get to fly the Millennium Falcon, you get to fly an X-Wing.
LeeIt's a TIE fighter.
LeeYou get to shoot stormtroopers.
LeeAh, it's just, it's everything you want.
ChrisWhat more could you want?
LeeBrilliant.
LeeSo, yeah.
AdamThere is a Hoth level, isn't there? There's a snow speeder level, because I remember playing that.
LeeThere may be, I haven't gotten to it.
LeeI think there's 16 levels in total, and as I say, I did the first seven, I think, so, yeah.
LeeReally good.
AdamNice.
AdamWell, um, that's, um, yeah, no, I, I, I recall that as well.
AdamThere are, there's still some bloody amazing games within the Star Wars universe.
AdamUm, and yeah, that's one of the things that definitely comes up in this episode is there are quite a few that are just now in my head bits from games.
LeeYes.
ChrisOh, yeah.
AdamUm, it was the original X-Wing was what made me want to get a PC. I remember seeing that at a friend's house and just thinking that is the most amazing looking game ever.
AdamSimilar to Lee, I think this might have been a few years before because I had I had the um, I had Rebel Assault 1.
AdamAnd it was like one of the first CD-ROM games and so it was the, uh, you know, the motion video.
AdamBut yeah, there wasn't too much to it, so in comparison to X-Wing, it was a bit limited.
AdamUm, but, you know, it's, it was fun.
AdamJust, uh, yeah, I never played Rebel Assault 2, though.
LeeAh.
LeeDo it, it's really good. As I say, like, it's, it's on an emulator, so it's a bit clunky.
LeeEvery time you click at the wrong part of the screen, it comes down to like a portion of your screen and you can't maximize it again without restarting your computer.
LeeSo it's a bit.
LeeBut, um.
LeeYeah, like, to be fair, you don't want the graphics on a great big 24-inch screen because they look like dog, so you want them in a tiny little screen, it works perfectly.
AdamYeah, that's true. Don't do it through your projector.
LeeNo, no.
AdamSo, uh, any, any others have uh any uh Star Wars adjacent or?
ChrisI, I'm watched, I finished watching The Mandalorian, but we can't talk about it, so that's the end of that.
AdamI appreciate I appreciate all of you gentlemen for that you I'm wouldn't wouldn't spoil it for me.
AdamAlthough there is an element where I have eyes and access to the Internet, so.
LeeOh.
AdamThere's, there's quite a few bits that I'm kind of aware of now.
LeeYeah.
AdamBecause, yeah, and, and in fairness, if you're late, if you're late to the party, you have to expect it a bit.
ChrisYou deserve a bit, yeah.
ChrisBut it's still worth watching, I would say, even knowing some of it.
AdamOh, no, absolutely. All the spoilers I've heard have made me want to watch it.
AdamSo.
AdamYou know, everything I hear always, even if it's like, oh, I should have got in that, I wish I didn't know that, that's fucking brilliant.
AdamSo.
ChrisIt did, it did add a bit, actually, for me, rewatching Attack of the Clones now, seeing Jango Fett and Boba Fett after seeing The Mandalorian.
ChrisIt added a little extra depth to their characters, so that was good.
AdamYeah, of course, yeah.
AdamUm, because, uh, oh, um, I can't think, I can't think of the actor's name, but um.
AdamUh, obviously the guy who plays Jango Fett as Boba gets hold of, would become.
AdamUh, the he's a clone.
AdamSo.
AdamI mean, gives spoiler, yeah, that's that's the point.
AdamActually, yeah, I did the intro a bit bad, be prepared for swearing and spoilers.
AdamUm, so, you know, the fact that we've possibly spoiled things and definitely sworn before now, um, I admit that this is a bit late in the day, but it's not too late in the day, you know, it's not like in the closing credits, shall we say.
LeeWe're not in deep, yeah.
AdamNo, no, no.
AdamDeeper.
AdamBut.
AdamUh, and um, yeah, so, uh, and uh, where's have you been Star Wars-ing in any way, shape or form?
UnknownUm, two things.
WesleyTwo things, really, I started rewatching Star Wars Rebels.
WesleyAnd on the PlayStation Store, they had a whole bunch of Star War games, so I got myself the, uh, Podracing one.
AdamOh, yeah.
WesleyI also got myself the Super Arcade Star Wars one, which is good.
AdamAnd.
ChrisWhat do you have to do in that?
WesleyOh, it's, it's just like, it starts with Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.
AdamAnd yeah.
ChrisIs that like a platform? You're running along.
WesleyYeah, yeah.
ChrisOkay.
WesleyBut I just, I played like the beginning of that until I died, and then I went straight onto the Podracing one.
WesleyBecause I just love, I love racing games, so.
LeeYeah.
AdamYeah.
AdamI mean, that's the good thing.
WesleyI only learned recently that because I don't drive and know nothing about driving, Sam told me that when you take a corner, you're supposed to slow down.
WesleyI didn't, I thought there was an angled way you flip the back out and it went around and through it.
LeeThat's what you may.
AdamMany ways.
AdamIs it a relief that you're not driving in that?
WesleyI would say so.
AdamYes.
WesleyFor my own safety, if no one else's.
AdamI mean, I think you, that's another good point that works probably in the favor of the Star Wars games is that they do have.
AdamYou do have a bit of everything.
AdamSo you can have, you will, you will have racing levels, you will have combat levels, you'll have platform levels.
AdamUm, and, and weirdly enough, even in the early, the earlier films where they weren't necessarily thinking in that sense, you still had bits that you could definitely pinpoint.
AdamAnd it's like, right, if, if you're adapting the game of this, this, these are the beats you put in.
AdamYeah.
AdamYou know.
AdamYou, for example, you have to fight the Rancor if you were, you know, so you get a Shadow of the Colossus moment in.
AdamIn the game.
AdamBut, um, although for me the whole, the whole thing, I think, lives and dies with Lego Star Wars.
AdamI was addicted to those sort of games.
LeeYeah.
WesleyAnd.
AdamUm.
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd, you know, and, and also just when you suddenly found out.
AdamHang on.
AdamSo if I unlock all the characters in the prequel's version, I can play them in the original trilogy version.
AdamAnd suddenly, yeah.
AdamYou're walking around like General Grievous.
AdamAnd, uh, you know, and that just, oh, yeah, it's a pleasure.
WesleyJajar is great at jumping.
WesleySo you can get all the high things in the new ones.
AdamYeah.
AdamAnd also there's a weird bit where you break down and, oh, no, no, that was, I think it was the other way around, but, um.
AdamThere was bits where you could visit other, uh, Lego games.
AdamBecause there is definitely a hidden level in the Indiana Jones Lego where you end up in the Cantina because it's like the, um, sort of early, um, from Raiders of the Last Ark.
AdamAnd you end up with, yeah, and you end up, there's you break down this wall and suddenly you're in the Cantina or on Mos Eisley or in Jabba's Palace and stuff.
LeeNice.
AdamUm, yeah, they were, they were, they're great games.
AdamThose I definitely would have to dig.
WesleyAnd when you're Yoda, never walk anywhere unless you've got your lightsaber out.
AdamHm.
WesleyBecause it'd be sodding walking around for ages with that little walking stick.
LeeYeah.
AdamYeah, it's painful.
AdamBut, um, yes.

AdamUh, Chris, uh, what are you, where are you and who are you?
AdamNo.
AdamChris, uh, yeah, initial thoughts on Attack of the Clones, having rewatched for this, or watched recently for this.
ChrisYeah, so this is my third viewing.
ChrisUm, I watched it fairly recently for the second time.
ChrisUm, and the first time was in the cinema, but I don't remember it as clearly as Phantom Menace.
ChrisUm, I guess at that point it had started to blend in a little bit.
ChrisUm, so what I took away from watching it the first time was definitely liked the whole, um, parts of the story where you start to see Anakin turning into Vader.
ChrisSo I, I thought artistically, some of that they did well. I did like, you know, the shadow, um, when he's on, when he's about to go to the sand people.
ChrisYou know, things like that, you know, it could be tacky, but I thought some of that did work for me.
ChrisUm, but I, I struggled between, I would say the worst elements were the dialogue between him and Obi-Wan.
ChrisI just, I felt like, um.
ChrisLike I, I understood that they were trying to get across the fact that Obi-Wan was dealing with him badly, but it just felt a bit like too obvious.
ChrisLike the, the Jedi Council should have perhaps stepped in between the 10 years of him training him and just constantly telling him he's a stupid young Padawan who knows nothing all the time.
ChrisLike, I mean, if anything, that would turn me into Darth Vader.
ChrisI'd accidentally turn my lightsaber on and just cut Obi-Wan a little bit occasionally.
AdamOh, yeah.
LeeA little bit.
ChrisYou know, like it's just.
AdamYeah.
ChrisJust chill a bit, you know.
ChrisLike and especially when they know he's got anger problems, like don't put him with some sarcastic, jumped up, you know, barely trained himself Jedi wannabe master.
ChrisBut anyway.
ChrisIt's, that's, that's sort of my view on them.
ChrisBut I, I did like, um, yeah, the whole story as it unfolded and with him and Padmé, it's, it's pretty good.
ChrisYou know, again, quite awkward parts, but, you know, I can see what they were going at with it.
ChrisSo overall, I did, I did kind of like it, but, um, yeah.
AdamBut you feel that, you feel that Obi-Wan was just a bit.
ChrisHe, he did not do it for me.
ChrisAs.
ChrisAs I imagined Obi-Wan from seeing him in the, the originals, it just, it wasn't quite how I imagined he would have been.
AdamYeah, I mean, I can, I can see what you think.
AdamI think, mind you, I find.
AdamI, I think I personally, I find a lot of the dialogue, anything involving Anakin seems a bit off.
AdamYeah.
AdamPoint.
AdamYou know.
AdamAnd, and it's, you know, I don't want to, I don't want to, um, sort of blame Hayden Christensen.
ChrisI, I would say, yeah, I would say it doesn't immediately make me think it's all his fault.
AdamNo, no.
AdamI think, well, again, I think we might be back to that thing we were talking about last week where George Lucas famously doesn't really quite get the best out.
AdamDirect actors.
ChrisYeah.

AdamUm, it's very much the same story in Revenge in Revenge of the Sith, where he becomes a very sort of, um, he basically just gets acted off the screen because he's with Ewan McGregor.

AdamI'll, I'll give him his due, although I find Hayden Christensen really sort of quite wooden in the role, one bit that he actually does brilliantly is when he finds his mom.
